  • It's also extremely cruel. Like if someone really wants to kill themselves due to ongoing unsolvable pain, they should absolutely have that right. Suicide is a human right.

Sure, of course we should do our best to provide options to solve their pain...even if they feel it is unsolvable, it might not be. It is important we do everything to show them that it might actually be solvable. I'm not denying we need more of those supports for people considering suicide. But like, if they have tried absolutely everything and are in a constant state of pain then only a truly evil person would force them to continue to suffer. It's fundamentally immoral.

Children are able to understand why putting a suffering dog down in the right course of action, but somehow a majority of adults seem unable to draw the same conclusion around people with incurable terminal illnesses that make people suffer immensely (for example ALS).

  • K yeah, that sounds shitty and I'm sorry you had to deal with it. The fact that some of us, myself included, got quite lucky with good teachers who knew how to teach the content probably does make all the difference.

  • I strongly suspect there were both word problems used in your math classes and that compound interest was in the curriculum. But maybe there is somewhere there actually isn't. Generally, the curriculum documents are all publicly available online too so feel free to take a look. Although finding the curriculum from 10+ years ago can be hard if there have been changes.

Had you really never seen something like 'Joe currently owes $300 on his credit card with an annual interest rate of 22%. How much will he owe 2 years from now if he makes no payments and no new purchases'?

All you need is the compound interest formula. It could be about investments or a ball accelerating due to gravity and it's still just that same formula with different numbers plugged in.

  • People who want to maintain traditional gender roles don't want change. Feminists on the other hand would like to see more women in trades and more men in nursing/teaching and do want change.

The craziest part to me is when people act like it's the opposite way around.

  • Yes, just like how we all learned about how important it is to pay off credit card debt and the benefits of long term investing while in school (aka compound interest...in math class). Yet far too many people act like this is something that needs to be added to the curriculum when it's already there.

  • Where did I say anything about supporting genocide? You're the one telling me to die lol. I don't support any form of genocide and at no point in this thread, or any thread, did I say anything to even slightly imply that.

Did you get me confused with someone else you are replying to or something?

  • A lot of times I don't read the drink sections of the menu because I'm not having a drink. Or I might skip the dessert section. Sometimes the special that the server tells me about sounds so good so I just say 'I will take that please' without looking at the menu at all. I don't read menus cover to cover nor do I inspect all signage on a window...but I guess I will now when visiting the USA since apparently that's the expectation. If I did notice such a thing before ordering, I would just not eat there.

And any mandatory fee is not a tip by definition so I see this as a completely different issue from tipping culture.

  • I am hopeless when it comes to accepting your white savior view of things, yes. And which original plan? The one in support of murdering all mixed race people? Also which table? I literally don't understand what you're trying to say.

If you can't even justify your position, like...at all. Doesn't that sort of make you consider rethinking your position at least a little bit?

  • Because it isn't something that can be meaningfully implemented. Not to mention what if it all goes to a First Nation I disagree with having control of it? Like I said, it's contested between three indigenous groups.

There also the issue, that I keep bringing up, of me being mixed race. I don't see how we can only look at the 25% of my genetic heritage while ignoring the other 75%. The world is a lot more complicated than a binary worldview of 'idigenous or not'.

You, and others blindly yelling 'land back' without any specifics are not being realistic at all and just want to feel better about your own position without actually taking any meaningful specific actions.

  • The area I live in is disputed between 3 different First Nations, one of which I am a part of...

I think you're having trouble picturing me as a minority-dominant mixed race individual because you are white yourself?

  • Look, we should do something. I'm looking for solutions. I want Japanese people to get their land back. I want Indigenous people to get their land back. I just don't know how it's even vaguely possible or feasible.

Also, following treaties signed under duress and in situations of radically unequally power dynamics isn't too reasonable either. Not to mention that in much of Western Canada, for example, there aren't many signed treaties at all.

It's complicated, yes... But blindly yelling 'land back' doesn't actually provide anyone any meaningful solutions. No one actually gets any land back that way.

  • So I get to continue living on someone else's land? I really don't feel good about that. And who is the 'they' here? Only pure blood line indigenous people, but not mixed race indigenous people? I sincerely do not understand what you're trying to say here.

I definitely support ending property ownership and am a Marxist. But I still don't know where the mixed race people like myself are supposed to go. And I literally want to go, just trying to figure out where.

  • Hmm ty. Not sure if my 'sync' app is glitching or something. But the upvotes I received make me inclined to think I'm not the only one who had that specific chain disappear all of the sudden.

Edit: K so they were deleted as suspected. But why? While some people disagreed with each other, it was a civil discussion with the intention of providing a solution to a real issue. Very concerning such a thing would get deleted at all.

  • I 100% would after offering to pay the full bill as indicated in the menu. I bet 99% of the time they would just accept it too. Only a sucker would pay a random tacked on fee they never agreed to.
