  • Yep, it would be ceding habeas corpus. It would effectively agree that anyone secretly kidnapped out of the country and handed to another authoritarian state was a totally legal and cool end run around the Constitution.

If the Supreme Court agrees to this, it's knocking a pretty huge block of the foundation out of our democracy.

  • "Free TV" means "TV paid for with your time and attention."

Know what else pays you for your time and attention? Your job. We can quibble about how hard work it is to watch ads, but that is what's happening: you're just working, bartering and using up irreplaceable portions of your life with inevitable unavoidable ads, when you use these free TV services.

  • This is a very good article, since Trump is surrounded by these people - not just oligarchs (who value money and autonomy) but politicians (who value power or the proximity to it) and other sycophants.

What connects all of these people is the belief - likely not even a conscious one - that a move that helps them in the short term is all that matters. They think handing over or demanding others hand over power to Trump is going to endear them to him, protect them, empower them, enrich them. They have myopia and have never seriously looked at Russia, which Trump is clearly modeling the US after.

The lesson is clear, and demonstrated well by this article: yes, it will all work great. Right until they pass through a pane of window glass or end up in a prison camp.

  • That's exactly it. The right wing base sees due process as a barrier to prosecuting criminals, because they don't understand that, in reality, you cannot legitimately call someone a criminal without following the agreed-upon process to define them that way in the first place. It's too much work to think before acting.

Just normalizing the typical fascist mindset, collapsing the logic: "They deserve deportation because they're a criminal, and they're a criminal because I said so."

  • Yes, even though it's a stereotype, it's about as good a diagnostic criterion as we have. Lack of empathy (i.e., care about those unlike them) seems to be the defining feature for republicans. They can sympathize (i.e., care about those like them), but only after they experience something. And not always then.

  • The agency is expected to partner with a third-party vendor to manage certain aspects of the data project. Palantir, a software company cofounded by billionaire and Musk associate Peter Thiel, has been brought up consistently by DOGE representatives as a possible candidate, sources tell WIRED.

So they are planning on relying on an outside surveillance and analytics tech company whose name is taken from the Lord of the Rings orbs that are used by Sauron to spy on Middle Earth. But that's just a fluke coincidence, right?

Corcos has discussed plans for DOGE to build “one new API to rule them all”

Uh... So, yeah, that's just the single most famous line from Sauron himself, about his plan to enslave all of Middle Earth. Funny coincidence. But this is a code update - I'm sure this will be run by reasonable people, bean counters, and not insane partisan zealots.

Palantir CEO Alex Karp said in a February earnings call. “Disruption at the end of the day exposes things that aren't working. There will be ups and downs. This is a revolution, some people are going to get their heads cut off.

    So...umm...

  • I've cautioned people to not get hopeful in 2024, given how dumb people can vote and the amount of blind R voters, but NYC works the opposite way (usually to everyone's benefit) - the amount of people who will always vote Democrat, no matter the candidate, is huge. Whoever is the Dem candidate will 99% likely win. The Dem primary is NYC is effectively the general. Adams will only have name recognition, and his name is mud in NYC right now.
