  • The whole abortion thing in the US is pretty perfect to demonstrate that argument. You can assume that you have nothing to hide in the current political situation of your country, but say that somehow changes and they define you as the outgroup and suddenly things are very different. I wouldn't want a cryptographic backdoor in my messenger, then. Looking at you, EU

Or assume you're visiting China or some other country with strong opinions on how you're allowed to speak of the ruling party. Or some religious extremist country that doesn't like women. Or one where drug cartels pull the strings and they may think you have valuable skills. (I think I'm approaching 3/4 of the world.)

Which leads to an interesting conclusion. The argument "I have nothing to hide" is very first world problem-y. It's a luxury that we can afford to not look behind our figurative backs all the time.

  • 40GB Pirates of the Caribbean just hits differently. The black pearl coming out of an actual mist and not layers of gray that slowly recede because of compression is very awesome. FullHD with proper bitrate is enough for my 2m projector image, too.

  • I agree, that was (supposed to be) my point, too. 'Murder is wrong in every case, no matter the context' is too black and white, and just sitting on a high horse and preaching won't remedy the underlying situation. The trolley problem exists for a reason. The French revolution was supposed to be the extreme counter example to disprove OP's stance, since most people will look at the French revolution as justified and necessary, but murder was very much part of it.

The 'violent revolution inevitable' quote was meant to show that it's still a last resort, but alas, we're apparently approaching that point.

  • Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.

I'm sure you'd have preferred France to remain a monarchy because of moral absolutism?

  • People only think about extremes. Why do we need seatbelts on a plane? Well, not for the crash, for the tons of turbulence you don't think about because you're wearing your seatbelt when they happen.

  • Loose fit, but my family lived in Australia for a few years. We're German. One night, my dad feels like a shake after a long drive to a vacation spot, so he drives up to a McDonald's and orders, the rest of the family dozing in the car.

    "One erdber shake, please."

    "Excuse me?"

    "One erdber shake, please?"

    "... I don't understand."

At this point my mum realized.

    "Oh, a strawberry shake!"

We all have a bit of a laugh. He said the German word for strawberry, but pronounced it English. None of us in the car realized and we all understood. The lady in the drive through said she thought they invented a new flavor she didn't know about.

He also swaps the th and s in Thous Australia. :)

  • I completely failed that course. I don't know what they mean or how to use them.

I never needed them. Guess it's "when will we ever use geometry in real life" but with EM fields and waves.
