Reminder: gas prices have next to nothing to do with Russia's war in Ukraine. They are artificially hiked up by the producers simply because they can (and because the world is transitioning away from fossil and it's one of their last tangos)
AI is already destroying humanity. All the algorithms that drive content distribution are producing society polarized to the extreme. We consume media that some machines decide to serve us with one goal: grow engagement.
AI destroying humanity is not robots crushing skulls, but automated services mushing brains.
What I mean is not the comedy episodes, but general demeanor of characters. Lots of little silly quirks that are more common in sitcom characters than navy/explorers that the federation is.
As a fellow GenX I could not agree more. I was absolutely hyped when Trek returned to cinemas only to get increasingly disappointed by a "star wars reboot proof of concept" approach to the movies.
When Discovery came around I was all in, but soon it turned into a shooting gallery pew pew show and became the first Trek show I abandoned mid-way.
Picard was a confusing mess where they made friends with Borg only to fight Borg next season... and then ended to the crowd's applause because showrunners drowned it in memberberries.
Strange New Worlds is about discoveries and relationships and science. It's goofier than TOS or TNG but in a nice, friendly way. It does not try to be edgy or shocking - it feels fresh and engaging, just like TNG, DS9 and VOY felt when they were first broadcast.
I guess we're just about to wrap up the second season, so it may be too early to call - but SNW is way on the way to becoming my favorite Trek, not just of the modern era but of all time.
I just got burned by too many industry darlings turning out to be just another shop that screws their audience, or their employees, or forces crunch, or harasses minorities, or releases broken titles, or this or that.
Roadmaps, promises and decorations don't mean a thing. Actions do. And actions can be only judged in time.
So far their record is great. Hope it stays this way. I will applaud them for what they've done so far. The rest - future will show.
I think Strange New Worlds is the best Star Trek show made so far. Every season they seem to have 9 amazing episodes and one so cringe I end up fast forwarding through the whole thing. This musical one was the low point of the season and the series, just like that word fantasy ones they did in season 1.
Maybe it's not just the OS vs OS but more like Gimp vs Photoshop. Both accomplish pretty much the same tasks, but one feels way more polished than the other.
Maybe this will work: Sync feels like a Product, while Jerboa feels like a Project.
There are pros and cons to both approaches. I happen to be looking for a clean, pretty app that integrates with my Android 13 theming etc.
I was using Jerboa for the first month. It's good, functional. However, with all due respect to the penguin people, it felt like working on Linux. Just a bit too utilitarian and function focused.
Yesterday I installed Sync and it was like switching to Windows/OSX. So much more polish, much more pleasant experience.
On Reddit I was using BaconReader - and had no idea Sync looked (and felt) this good. Great UX, though still has some ways to go. The comment font size when typing is super tiny!
It's the same story with pretty much any platform. While you may know YouTube as the tool where AI/software randomly bans innocent channels and demonetizes videos based on false positives, it actually has a small army of human moderators. These poor folks are constantly exposed to some of the most vile content humankind produces >! ::: beheadings, rape, torture, child abuse::: !< etc.
I once worked on a project aiming to help their mental well-being, but honestly, while a step in the right direction, I don't think it made much difference.
Edit: attempting to nest multiple spoiler formatting
