  • that word doesn’t mean what you think it means

actually, i think it’s you that doesn’t understand what the word means so here’s the definition:

Genocide is the intentional destruction of a people in whole or in part. In 1948, the United Nations Genocide Convention defined genocide as any of five "acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group". These five acts were: killing members of the group, causing them serious bodily or mental harm, imposing living conditions intended to destroy the group, preventing births, and forcibly transferring children out of the group. Victims are targeted because of their real or perceived membership of a group, not randomly.

    partial targeting is still genocide

  • i don’t live in the US. i live in australia, so have very little ability to solve your countries problems. our system is preferential voting so voting 3rd party is what i do: in fact, our ballot papers have 60 different parties on them!

there’s a bunch about how americans react to things that i just do not understand, so im a poor choice to even spitball solutions - but maths is maths and closing your eyes and denying the reality of the problem doesn’t help solve it. it just ensures you get the worst outcome!

and yes, i do care even though i don’t live there, and yknow what, yes it does effect me and most people because, as the adage goes: when the US sneezes the rest of the world gets a cold

  • 3rd party in the US is almost certain to amount to nothkng given how game theory, the spoiler effect, defensive voting, the electoral college, and various other social and mathematical things come together

here’s a great series by CGP grey on why that is:
    https://youtu.be/s7tWHJfhiyo

the reality is that a vote for 3rd party is the same outcome as not voting… its awful, but sadly that’s the way it is. if you want to vote 3rd party, you need to work to change the system somehow first

  • sure! totally agree… so the best vote is for not overtly fascist… you don’t solve this particular problem at the polls: you have to solve it some other way

and no, i don’t know how that is done but that’s just the reality… FPTP voting system leaves you no good options. you must either change the way the system works, or work outside the system

not voting of the lesser of the 2 options, right now, in this reality, gets you the worst outcome… and even worse, shifts BOTH options significantly worse for next time

  • it’s sad that people allow themselves to fall for the disenfranchised voter syndrome

it’s reality mate… you get democrat or you get republican. with how first past the post mathematically works, that’s what you’re stuck with. deal with reality and vote the system or scream at the wall

  • i believe the full name is

“the company formerly known as Twitter aka Birdsite, Xitter pronounced Shitter aka X”

  • well, i’m not about to go back now that i have an ad-free experience… it was apathy and laziness that kept me there, and now invidious is a much better way to consume the content

i don’t use sponsorblock, so creators can monetise me (ie i can “pay” for the content) that way and google won’t see a cent or be able to farm my data (well, i’m sure they can but probably not as well)

  • i never really ad blocked on youtube (as annoying as they were), so nothing would have really changed for me… however, i do use umatrix to block all JS and other content by default and selectively allow only minimal parts of a site required for its operation

since the introduction of the “ad block detection” bs, youtube has been complaining at me and not letting me watch videos

i then searched for alternatives, found invidious, and now i dont see youtube ads

    fuck you google

  • are as likely to die from covid, as unvaccinated elderly people

and that’s the bit of grey that some people seem to latch onto: some vaccines (like the COVID vaccines) don’t prevent disease: they reduce the likelihood or severity of disease. that doesn’t mean they don’t work, it just means that they only work most of the time… which is a whole shit load better than none of the time

  • fyi you can do that with invidious too

  • the shocking things isn’t so much that it’s not private per se: we expect twitter to see everything we do and “personalise our experience”… we don’t expect arbitrary people to be able to

  • depends which “you” you’re talking about

makes no sense for slovakia in the next few years that’s for sure

    but for fico…

if he can get political points by spewing russian BS that russia then backs up (both directly and indirectly) then that helps him personally politically

and who knows if he’s getting something compensatory from russia for it

  • i read this quote further down the thread:

In a charging affidavit released Wednesday, an investigator said he had reviewed security camera footage and that Bowman can be seen pushing multiple doors that would not open before he looked at the emergency fire alarm pull station “and upon seeing it, he reached out and pulled the fire alarm down.”

seems like he was pissed off that he couldn’t exit the building so pulled the fire alarm to release the doors

  • tedious is the point! i love that by trying to make it quick and “catchy” he made it really long, cumbersome, and made it a meme that the rebranding will never work because we’re still referring to it as twitter but worse

  • i make porn

i’ve spent thousands of dollars on camera equipment

i post it online, in 4k, for free, and there’s no way to pay me for the content

i do it because i like the exhibitionism (among other things)

i do it because in the sex-positive communities i prefer to associate with, it’s like posting your day to facebook

i do it because the camera pushes me to imagine new and interesting things to do

i do it because it helps me meet people with similar tastes that aren’t flakey and are equally sex positive and non-judgemental

there’s an enormous amateur community (that often becomes professional) that makes porn because they want to… money is a nice thing to help buy new gear for porn, but it’s not the primary concern

  • yeah stupid people like most tech workers who just need their tech to work as expected rather than be “customisable”

there’s value in the “just works” when not working costs you hundreds of $ per hour that it doesn’t work

$2000 for a phone is nothing when it’s a professional device

  • 100% this… words are cheap, and he needs to do everything he can for his country… supporting palestine or staying silent gets him nothing, and potentially loses quite a bit in retaliation

it really doesn’t matter what he thinks is fair or just

  • it’s possible that $14bn is just what’s needed to get republicans to the table to send the rest to ukraine

  • recycling, containment, disposal… i’m pretty sure forever chemicals aren’t actually forever: put enough energy into them and we can probably make them no longer forever chemicals… it’s only a problem because we don’t contain and process them
