  • You are right, threads go on tangents.

this wasn’t a tangent, it was a u-turn 16min after the article was posted

first thing that came to mind was comparing it to us the USA.

then the exact propaganda that’s being talked about in the article has worked spectacularly. congratulations on helping russia destabilise democracy across the world without even realising it

I see a lot of media talking about other nations, while we still need to improve ours, maybe that is why it keeps popping up.

    world: exists
US: HEY ARE YOU GUYS TALKING ABOUT SOMETHING THATS NOT ME?!?

The fix your house before you start criticing others houses, statement.

no, it’s nothing like that at all, because this is an autocracy trying to literally destabilise democracy across the world and significantly negatively effect the lives of billions at a time when the world is the least stable and closest to the brink of war that it has been for decades… it is not a house

  • literally nobody disregards it… every thread anywhere someone points out the US

WE ALL AGREE! but ITS ALSO NOT OKAY FOR RUSSIA… and thats what the thread is about

  • russian elections to not meet the standard of free and fair elections… thus, russia has theatre

  • i’m sure they learned plenty of things about the old game engine they built

and now they have a new one… which was the whole point

  • that’s true, but this would require time and money to implement, market, etc, and would almost certainly require big b2b contracts to be signed

  • (small) rocket science is much less hard now that it’s pretty well documented on the internet afaik

  • re peertube discovery, i saw this the other day:

    https://sepiasearch.org/

framasoft developed both peertube, and this… i assume to address that exact concern

  • as aStonedSanata mentioned, different tech isn’t what we’re talking about: fibre shouldn’t be limited to the speeds of, say ADSL or cable to keep things neutral

what we’re talking about here is, for example, netflix paying your ISP to prioritise traffic to their service over other services… this causes an enormous disadvantage to new startups, because they likely can’t afford to pay a similar fee or even enter into complex agreements with every carrier! in which case, netflix has a better service not because they’re better: just because they’re incumbent

of course these kind of things happen all over the place, but it’s the exact failure of capitalist systems that governments should seek to patch with regulations (like net neutrality) because it’s not good for consumers, the economy, or innovation… which are all the very things that capitalism is meant to promote!

  • North American Union has a certain ring to it

  • and as a citizen of a country other than the US, we’re very used to america being horrifically overrepresented in any sort of politics ever no matter what :p so swings and roundabouts i guess

  • hopefully at least when ISPs and companies see that it’ll just be back and forth, and that things like “fast lanes” can’t be relied upon in business planning there just won’t be a market for it, or at least the fuckery will be significantly diminished because it’s not reliable long-term

  • honestly outside of israel and palestine it’s worrisome that anyone considers either side their team

its a super complex situation and both sides are fucking monstrous, but inside either country it becomes real simple: the other side legitimately might end specifically my life through nothing but random misfortune

outside of that, i don’t see how anyone can think there’s 1 side that’s in the right

  • probably best not to say “given their initial claim” given that the source is a friend who didn’t say where they’d seen the info

so you may have misinterpreted what they were saying (someone claimed rather than reliable israeli sources claim), they could have misinterpreted what the source was saying, the source could have been exactly like this post and subject to similar accidental misinterpretation, or it could be just straight up misinformation: either accidental or intentional

given the amount of misinformation swirling about the whole situation, i’d probably go with “i had heard” or “i think someone mentioned somewhere” etc

  • or just classified in general… there’s plenty of blame to pass israel; let’s not give anyone ammo to say it’s all just bias

  • afaik all OLED displays get this: the pixels degrade slightly over time… any always on display in a phone currently will be an OLED display, so the movement will certainly be to at least smooth out the pixel degradation

  • activitypub at its core is incredibly simple afaik… its just a set of defined APIs and that follow ActivityStream schemas

the actual user identifiers we interact with in software aren’t the same as what activitypub uses internally (they’re all URIs so look more like https://

it wouldn’t be difficult to use a similar mechanism as they’re using right now to direct a particular domain or subdomain to a user ID: it’s all rewritten anyway!

  • the custom algorithms feature and usernames is absolutely the killer features of bsky for me… they’re a really amazing idea!

but not using activitypub is unforgivable imo… i’m sure there will be bridges eventually, but… come on; that shouldn’t be necessary… when you’re trying to shift the entire human population to federated networks, you can’t just break out on your own. is it perfect? no… is it a bare minimum spec that allows you to build on it? absolutely!

  • feeds on bluesky are actually a really cool idea! form what i understand, they’re meant to replace “the algorithm”: people can write and register code to curate posts for feeds, and other people can use those same feeds to filter posts (so the algorithm can be customised per user, open source, etc: it’s a choice… heck, you can have multiple so it’s multiple choices!)

that means it’s less likely someone can manipulate “the algorithm” because there’s no single algorithm! and you can filter your feed based on anything, rather than just simple things like tags

  • they had the desired effect, it just wasn’t the effect you were looking for. these changes effectively increase the safety of sex work

the regulations in question were rolled back because they were made in 1994 as a first attempt at legislation… when certain things are found not to be necessary or to cause more harm than good, they were updated

the last part is really the crux of the issue: regulations that people largely ignore are unhelpful… they only mean that people are less likely to seek help for fear of punishment, and that leads to more abuse

we had sex worker registration so that the government could track effectiveness of policy changes and revoke licenses if people weren’t following the rules, but it was found that some people were doing sex work without registration, and then were reluctant to seek help if they got exploited or abused for fear that they’d get into legal trouble

other systems were put in place to ensure everyone stays safe, and the registrations were no longer necessary

  • decreasing the number of SEX WORKERS was not the aim, and is honestly irrelevant

it has, however, significantly increased the safety of those doing sex work and allowed them to make choices rather than being stuck

there are other reports and follow ups that go with that piece; that’s just kinda the culmination and the government PR piece
