  • Did you go to college?

I'm close-ish to your age and college is the reason I basically never ate alone. When I was in the dorms, my roommate or friends and I almost always went to the dining halls together. If I had to catch lunch on my own due to a weird schedule or whatevs, I'd chat up somebody new and (hopefully) make a friend. Then when I was in an apartment, my roommates and I ate together to save money. But I went to a school with a big campus, far away from where I grew up.

  • What's "short" about the short-sightedness, though? I've been a Game Pass subscriber for something like 8 years and it's still crushing it as far as services go - probably moreso now than any year prior.

Will it last / remain a good deal forever? Nope. But nothing does/is. Might as well enjoy the great variety of games I'd never purchase (like Blue Prince, Arcade Paradise, Shipbreaker, South of Midnight, Expedition 33, etc.) along with the convenience of access to games I totally would pay for (like THPS 1+2, Gears, Diablo, etc.). Plus the built-in rewards subsidize like 1/4 of the cost.

When (not "if", when) they jack up the price to a point that's not worth the games or I don't have enough time to play to justify the spend, I'll just cancel.

  • Yeah, from that perspective this reads roughly like when the Zoom CEO started forcing his own people back into the office. Basically tells the market that your company has no real faith in the claims it makes about its products.

  • The article doesn't actually cite compensation as an issue. The actual issue is lack of skilled talent, which is due to a couple of things including

    • These jobs require relevant skills; can't just hire someone off the street as you can in the service industry.
    • The US spent ages telling people that they were idiots if they didn't go to college, which pushed people away from trade skills
    • The Trump administration made aggressive cuts to training programs for blue-collar workers
  • FTA:

Anthropic warned against “[t]he prospect of ruinous statutory damages—$150,000 times 5 million books”: that would mean $750 billion.

So part of their argument is actually that they stole so much that it would be impossible for them/anyone to pay restitution, therefore we should just let them off the hook.

  • My work recently gave me an iPhone - first one I've ever owned - and the lack of a 3.5mm jack just fucking sucks. It makes everything so much less convenient. Bluetooth is so much slower to get going than a simple plug-in pair of cans (or even buds), and then that's another thing with a battery that I have to rely on.

Such a garbage decision. Now I understand what fashion truly is, I guess.
