  • If we're not talking about US airlines exclusively, I have very good experiences with Austrian Airlines. Their booking is straightforward, no hidden fees, good service on the airplane. The only issue I can think of is that it can be difficult to get into contact with a person from that airline when flying from a non-Austrian airport, but that is rarely needed anyway. They're not low-cost though.

  • But it is steadily improving. A couple of months ago the everything feed would hardly change in 24 hours. Now when you refresh after 4 hours you already see a lot of new content. It's not a sprint, this is a marathon and lemmy has a highly engaged user base.

The mod tools are improving, the content is improving, the user base is active and engaged, the larger instances have become stable and there are a ton of third party apps available now. Things are looking up for lemmy, and the users will come whenever a large site like reddit screws up again.

  • A+ cat

  • Not necessarily? More like by default. Purebreds are a thing because of certain genetic traits and are bred to not only maintain them, but to enhance those traits. Because of all that inbreeding the propensity for certain diseases and cancers are vastly increased. A purebred dog or cat will with near certainty be riddled with cancer or disease by the time they start getting a bit older. I love both cats and dogs, but purebreds shouldn't be a thing.

  • We have 4 and two litterboxes. No issues with them doing their thing. I have had it recommended we need more litterboxes, but since there are no issues, I don't really see the point. That being said, we religiously clean those twice a day, so I suppose that helps. And on the point of 4 cats, I agree, it's a bit much. We had two and then last year we found two kittens on the street (not at the same time), one scroungy as hell and the other one had a gaping wound. We nursed both back to health and then didn't have the heart to give them away, so yea, that's how that went.

  • Simple mode in chrome, reading mode (not sure if that's an extension actually) in firefox. Whatever addon you need to just show the text without the ads. Works on most sites

  • I travel a lot and taking your bags with you on the plane is just inefficient as fuck. Sure, you're out of the airport 5 minutes quicker, but you also have to take that shit everywhere with you. I consider you the amateur traveller.

  • Where I live (Slovakia) you need a license to own firearms. Getting that license is a lengthy and rigid procedure and needs to be repeated every 5 years. Fully automatic rifles are forbidden for civilians. The most commonly owned firearm is a hunting rifle. If you happen to own a firearm, but don't have a license, you are required to have it stored at a police station, for example when you inherit your grandfather's hunting rifle. For that you pay a relatively low storage fee, but you still own it.

I think these laws are fine. I don't own a firearm myself, but I do know one guy who carries a 9mm on him at all times for defensive purposes (his daughter had a very bad experience, after which he decided to carry a gun). I like the fact that a license is always only valid for 5 years.

  • I cancelled my storage subscription with google in the past year, partially to degoogle my life, but also because in all those years they kept the price the same for the same amount of storage. It's not like it was that much, 20€ for 100GB/year, but I have MS O365 family plan which gives me 1TB per account, so no real point in staying.

At one point I will have to demicrosoft I suppose, but I:m not in a rush. At least MS doesn't convert my pictures to shitty quality.

  • I just use an HP Microserver gen 8 with upgraded cpu and ram. But yea, just a relatively cheap computer is all 98% of the people really need, as long as you can configure enough disks. NAS'es are way overpriced with shitty hardware.

  • The Undying Mercenaries series by B.V. Larson is kind pf similar. Humanity is basically given the choice to be useful to the galactic empire (forgot what it's called in this series exactly) and the only useful export product we can offer are soldiers. The minds of the soldiers are backed up before going into battle and can be put in a cloned body, hence undying mercenaries.

  • "Its diplomatic missions do not receive money directly from Pyongyang, but instead sustain their presence from construction and IT, as well as illegal trade, smuggling and money laundering."

So this "IT" is not exactly innocent either. The North Korean IT workers hide their identity to get hired by western firms as consultants and funnel that money to Korea: https://www.reuters.com/world/us-announces-seizure-17-website-domains-used-by-north-korea-it-workers-2023-10-18/

Not to mention North Korean state sponsored hacker groups like Lazarus being active in ransomware, digital bank heists, data ransom, and the list goes on. Just like in Russia, the North Korean government is basically a criminal organization that managed to seize a country.
