  • I was relistening to an episode of the podcast "The age of Napoleon" and it was about the Code Civile and (partly) about how it reverted women's rights concerning divorce. During the French revolution women gained a lot of rights, including the rights to divorce from abusive husbands. The Code Civile actually reverted some of those rights, hence why this was mentioned, but it's quite amazing that over 200 years we are still having these discussions.

Is it really that difficult to not consider 50% of the population inferior by default?

  • I really don't understand what the hell happened there to make him chicken out. Like, once you cross the Rubicon, there is no turning back. And yet he turned back... It's just baffling and I simply can't imagine what could've possibly caused that, apart from sheer idiocy. I read somewhere the deal was that his family would live, but if he didn't get his family safe prior to his "coup" then his idiocy truly was unmatched.

  • Where is it stated he was a virgin? He used to be able to change his appearance at will. Pretty sure he got laid with every sentient species in Middle earth and probably some non-sentient as well.

  • If you're not used to cooking with induction it's a bit of a learning curve. It gets warm very quickly so your timings are different. I burnt a ton of food learning to cook with induction, but once you get the hang of it, it's super convenient.

  • I'm already investigating alternatives for my company to move away from vmware for when it inevitably turns to shit. We have not forgotten the shit Broadcom pulled with Veritas and finally managed to move away from that fully last year. Azure Arc seems promising and I have heard that a lot of companies are already switching from an old colleague.

  • There is the G1000 initiative in Belgium and the Netherlands. The idea is to have the legislative body be random people. There are even towns that already have implemented it. The concept is simple enough: representative democracy is inherently flawed, so just have legislators drawn by a lottery. With a high enough amount of people, you will get a near perfect representation of the population proportionally represented. For national bodies, the proposal is to have 1000 legislators, hence the number.

Personally I quite like the idea, especially if it were to be paired with a technocratic executive branch.

  • Ah, that hits close to home. I have spent a lot of time and energy to get my direct bosses onboard with following best practices and doing things right from the start. To their credit, they got onboard with it and are pushing that message themselves now. Of course, the board doesn't care about that and just jams random projects with strict deadlines without any thoughts given to the IT aspects of it up our asses, but our head of IT has apparently grown a spine and started pushing back, with some moderate success.

The MO of my company has for years been: do a POC and then as soon as it works, push that POC in production. I'm still cleaning up the mess of idiotic shit like that from 15 years ago.
