  • What?

Are you referring to a Steam default or the game default?

The game default is single player. You don't have to play online and not will you encounter characters like a MMO.

If you are referring to steam then just switch to offline? That isn't based on the game but the client running your game.

  • Not exactly, though it is RPG it is overhead style and more heavily based on the way Dungeons and Dragons plays. It is a turn based game with RNG elements though not entirely RNG has you influence your experience based on your character build.

It is heavily story focused but friends playing with you is heavily encouraged. No play through is entirely the same and that is the point. While there obvious game play and story elements that will remain the same the idea is to have a different experience each time.

It is absolutely worth playing. There is a bit more freedom and fun by design. It is truly the first larian game that has let me play my first ever character based on childhood imagination growing up as a kid.

  • I just bought a bathbomb called black rose frome Lush. My girlfriend approved but she wasn't the one using it.

A bathtub, chocolate, and wine. Guys listen, ladies have it all figured out. Treat yourself.

  • That's not how it works though? They don't need to know "who you are," because with ads you have a unique identifying number. If you are browsing the web and your ads become more catered to you then you are giving data somewhere.

Privacy is about maintaining as little about yourself as personally possible. That is what gets me about this app. Half the users on here have very little idea how the Internet works. Privacy and security aren't about going, "I support open source and decentralized software so the big man doesn't have my data," but that is not how that works at all. Just because you aren't giving your data to Mark Zuckerberg and you don't support Facebook doesn't mean you aren't exposing your giving data to someone else.

I also truly don't think Lemmy users realize how exposed they are potentially making themselves. Even if the API is free and your app is open source and it isn't Elon Musk showing you your image of a cat does not mean you are private and secure.

Lemmy services and instances are hosted on a server and use an API that is open to anyone and everyone that wants to host an instance and community. So instead you are entrusting your data to someone you don't know on their hardware that you don't know anything about.

From a security and privacy point of view Lemmy is a nightmare. Mastadon, etc. Even if your data is encrypted or passed along secure channels and you can migrate your data to some other instances does not mean you are safe. That is not how the law works either. If a national government agency shows up and issues an order for their server data and that data isn't protected properly by the host well then you are exposed. The people acting like they know something more because you decided to pay for Sync or because you want to use Windows or Google literally no zero fucks about privacy and data.

  • I reviewed your profile. Personal opinion. You have some personal growing to do.

  • Lemmy is great but the majority of you guys have a, r/notlikeothergirls vibe.

Like you know something about the world and by saying, "I am not mainstream I am alternative," you are making yourselves inclusive in some way. You don't know anything the rest of the world doesn't already have some idea about. Some sort of secret knowledge. I think my favorite thing I have seen on here is people thinking they are private and secure on the Fediverse. Despite the fact you are on a self hosted instance of someone's hardware and handing your privacy and security to someone random or an entity at random.

Being inclusive is not how you educate people. It's how you isolate your knowledge and make people think you are a jerk.

  • I think it is funny that this community thinks it knows everything about privacy and security and every time I see a post like this it becomes apparent that the main of this community doesn't.

I like the Fediverse but it is a security and privacy nightmare.

  • If you never played the original Baldurs Gate games or the devs original Divinity Original Sin games then you are in for an absolute treat.

This game is basically Dungeons and Dragons with so many ways to play and have fun.

Imagine if you will a half demon and a Dragonborn walk into a bar. The Dragonborn is a bard and the half demon is what is called a Tiefling. The two are best friends ready to take on the world. They meet a dark elf who is a powerful druid that can turn into a spider and a dwarf who is also warlock. The four of them find themselves surrounded by bandits but fret not the Dragonborn sings his tunes to make the Tiefling stronger. The drwarf helps freeze them in place and the druid spins her spindly legs to eat the bandits.

Together they will save the world. Well if your brain imagines all that in your own way then welcome to Baldurs Gate 3.

  • Buddy, the point being made here is specifically Android 10. I just made a comment on your thread about this exact thing.

At one point in time there was a version of Android that introduced gestures and it broke third party launchers that have gesture options themselves. People were freaking out because they thought Google was going to make Android natively kill 3rd party launchers.

In truth it was a bug with gestures and 3rd party launchers. It had to do with the fact that gestures were new and that version of Androids gestures didn't disable or have issues with 3rd party gestures interfering with one another.

I get your frustration a lot of people at the time understood your frustration and were worried but newer versions of Android no longer have this issue because the third party launchers can take advantage of the built in 1st party gestures and add their own additional gestures.

Also, Xiaomi is not exactly what I would call an LTS phone if you want longer service for support Pixel and Galaxy (especially Galaxy) are about as good as it gets on Android.

  • What version of Android? I thought this had to do with a certain version of Android. People were freaking out because they thought Android was going to natively make it harder to use 3rd party launchers but the truth was there was a version of Android that had a hard time with 3rd party launchers and gestures because it broke them and caused them to freak out or something.

  • Often times people on the internet think they are more techy or correct than they are. The other issue is this makes other users feel like the are actually less techy but the truth is an internet search can teach you a lot about how the Internet works.

My issue with the Lemmy community is that they think FOSS some how makes things more private and secure when that is indeed not at all how privacy or security works and there is enough evidence to suggest you are not secure no matter if it's FOSS or not FOSS.

There is also a mentality that paying for something makes it harmful or bad.

My argument for this is, "you will bother to pirate a game like Zelda for free because you love Zelda so much but then complain about Nintendo being bad because it walls things off. Zelda however would not exist without Nintendo and paying for Zelda would pay the devs to continue making Zelda even if it also means giving Nintendo money. So your logic is play a game you love but don't contribute to that game because you hate Nintendo?"

The same can be said about the sync drama. You want FOSS but can openly admit Sync looks nice and operates nice but you won't pay a price for something that seems better. Well the good thing is you don't have to. Sync isn't a problem because people want to pay money for an app that works. You are the problem however if you want to dictate how people use browse the web with an app of their choice.

FOSS is great. Lemmy wouldn't be here without FOSS but Lemmy's users decreased because Reddit's downfall and the community of users that came have talked about how poor some of the FOSS Lemmy apps are. However, they love Sync and sync also brought more people to Lemmy. People who are willing to pay. People who are making your platform more well known. An app like Sync is also offering a smooth experience and introduction to Lemmy and people will pay for things that work nicely.

  • Sorry for the lengthy TL;DR you are not secure by default or more secure by default either way. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages. There is an article below. I don't like to really argue but have educational discussions. Arguments don't really help anything. Hopefully, this is helpful as the wall of text comes off like a rant but it isn't. However, interpret it as you will. Have a nice evening.

The real point is that security is tricky being open doesn't always mean you are more secure or for that matter any more private.

"bad actors will get a hold of your code anyway."

This is the equivalent argument of, "we should just make guns free and available to everyone because if a criminal wants a gun they will just buy one."

There is some truth in your argument that is undeniable and anyone who attempts to deny that is a fool. That isn't my point however. The point is that closing something doesn't also mean it is less secure because prying eyes have seen it. Close sourcing content can also mean less prying eyes while it is true more people see open source it means your code is also more vulnerable to an attack.

Android and iOS are proof that close sourced and open source content both have their benefits and cons. I am an Android guy all the way but it is true that there tends to be less malware on iOS than Android. At least that is how it seems.

It is true that bad actors are going to act badly but what is even more true is there are proper ways both open and close source platforms can exist securely. While I love Android and Apple may not be the best analogy because they have tons of devs and lots of money and we are comparing them to 1 dev and small amounts of money.

Just because something is closed source doesn't mean it's a problem or less secure if anything close sourced and discovering a problem can make it more secure because that product actively gets better or more secure when the problem does become apparent. The issue is how the problem appears.

Open source appears more secure because more eyes can see it and that means a vulnerability can be spotted before it occurs but that also means more prying eyes could also take advantage of that vulnerability before it is caught and that does and has happened.

The theme I see on Lemmy is that anything not open source is something to be afraid of but that is not always the case.

Because I like to educate and not argue here is an article worth reading. The issue is that open source can begin to get too hard to follow if not everyone knows what they are looking at.

    Open Source Security

  • "99 to permanently stop it from spying on you."

No you don't have to pay at all actually. In fact people can choose to pay for something they love that works better than half the Lemmy apps I have already tried. I will pay for something that works.

Open source doesn't always mean you are any more safe either. I feel like this community thinks it knows more about security than it actually does.

  • "What running costs do they incur if Lemmy is free and open?"

The time they spend to make a product better. That is extra money they can use to put more effort into the app.

Sync's edge is the features it has, the customizable UI and a great developer that listens to its willing consumers that will pay to continue making that app better.

"I saw a subscription model for basic features..."

See this is my issue. The app is usable. You have the choice to pay. So don't if you don't want to. The API and features you want aren't here for a cost and that is fine.

You know what though? I will keep paying for those features a smoother Lemmy experience. An experience that brings more people from Reddit that gives the end user a smoother and much more impactful first impression.

If you were to hand me Jerboa and Sync at the same time and let me look them over. I would still pay for Sync. If you were to tell me which app I would recommend to a new user. I would tell them Sync. Why? Because Sync just over all functions and runs better. The UI is better. The little featured to tweak your experience are better. Navigation is better. I can use Sync on a tablet or larger device.

Sync creates a better first impression. People use things that look nice, work even more nicely. Here is the real shocker, they will even pay for those things.

  • I don't understand the issue here?

You want open source and free software. You get that with a developer trying to make a living to improve upon a product like Jerboa. Jerboa works but by comparison to Sync it is rough. By rough I mean the UI is not the best, it needs way more time and polish not only looks nice but has extra features and functions to make it stand out.

With something like Jerboa you would donate money by choice but if your argument is free and open source you need to donate more money to support that.

Sync is popular because its closed source makes it harder to break the security aspect if you don't have all the access to source code. It is popular because it was a great app for Reddit and had that advantage. You know what people did to help the developer make a living and put more time into it? They supported it willingly by paying for extra features to help the dev and get more out of the money they were willing to spend.

I understand free and open source APIs being available and wanting more free and open source software to stay that way to make all things free and open. So support the apps you appreciate being free by willingly providing money which in return makes them not free.

If you want things to get better somewhat you invest in them. If they go belly up well then it was a bad investment. Sync is a fantastic app and it has the edge because it has a good developer and has had a good community who pays for it and supports it because things you love you will support. If you are a good developer you give more for that money provided.

The PS Mini literally used an emulator to play games. A free open source emulator that you could find. People still paid for a console that charged to use that open source software. Why? Because they loved gaming at home and the product.

I will pay for Sync because it makes a product better. A product that makes a newcomer leave Reddit and find Lemmy. An app that provides familiar and easy to use features. An app that has the edge that can make Lemmy a smoother experience. Just because something charges money, which by the way is an optional choice, and just because something is close sourced which by the way tends to be more secure doesn't make the product bad. It can bring more into the community.

If your issue with Lemmy isn't that it's FOSS but your issue with other platforms is that they run poorly or they need more polish well then you are arguing against yourself.

  • Gotta love the, "I am the leader here," mentality.

  • I am confused? The "previous violations" were your doing or the employers?

  • This shouldn't be surprising at all. Nation state actors were actively using this. It would make sense that some part of the federal government would be using this as well.

  • That is also a giant red flag. Normally, when you are paid via some non-taxable reward, it means your "promotion" isn't ever going to come with benefits that allow you to go climbing up the ladder. You made a good decision there.
