While it is true that visible billionaires like Elon, or Peter Thiel, or Bezos think they are immune to the society that enables them, it's not just the Elon's of the world that control everything. If Elon/Bezos/Gates/Zuckerberg were assassinated, nothing changes. There are more Billionaires you haven't heard about. The share-holders of railroads and defense industries, energy sector magnates, secretive CEOs of private holding companies you've never heard of are their pawns, the entrenched rich. The ones that fund K-Street in the US. The ones that ensure the only viable politicians support Israel.

It's families with generational wealth that are so sheltered they don't participate in the same society as us. These are the people who know they wouldn't be safe if anyone knew who they were, and they have learned generational lessons. They are still just humans, but until the legal, financial, and governmental structures they've assembled over the last few centuries are dismantled, nothing can be improved for the rest of us.

I mean Boeing is a huge percentage of commercial aircraft, so of course it's a Boeing. It's like when you hear about an electric vehicle exploding, of course it's a Tesla, but that doesn't necessarily mean it was a design flaw. (Though fuck Tesla, they sucked way before people realized Musk sucks.)

The rich are well aware they aren't safe. But the average protestor is still chanting about "peaceful protest," and of course every major social-media outlet bans any deviation from that mantra. Until the status quo cannot be maintained, I don't think the rich as a class have anything to worry about.

I can import my_script2.py into my_script.py it doesn't run the main method unless I specifically invoke my_script2.main() though.

Idk, I guess I should ask why python needs a default function? If I'm running it as a script with commandline invocation I just copy and paste the if main namespace thing from stack overflow and it works as I intended. It also works if I invoke via python my_script.py $args, so I don't really see why I should philosophically care about how other languages that I'm not using do it.

The private university can enroll whoever they want, but the executive branch literally controls immigration/foreign affairs. So the students can attend remotely.

Eh. While that is true if you want to change an established party, it isn't true if you want improve society somewhat. As an elected-official at any level, you have more power and influence then a citizen, and no matter how little power you have, your presence in the body politic means that you have access to others in that body. There are plenty of things that a government does that require it's elected members to agree to do. As one of those members you have leverage that can be used to help make good things happen, or to soften the bad things that happen, and these are opportunities you don't have if you aren't a part of that system.

Running as a democrat to get ballot access is fine imo. Because once yo uare in office, you don't have to stay a Dem, and there is nothing the party can do to "force" you to stay a dem. They can and will primary you, but with incumbancy advantage, that costs them way more then beating you as an independent running against the dem candidate the first time.

Nah, the joke is the military generals who have been in charge for so long are rubes and can't even do corruption right. The Boeing shareholders/board members who are being paid these billions of dollars are the ones enjoying $4000 dollar wine and imported Kobe Beef steaks with the lobbyists

100% this. But my question is that since the US is the largest weapon dealer in the world, both in terms of dollar amount and number of planes etc, who the hell are buying these things and why? Surely when you are purchasing something that costs billions of dollars you have to account for the on-going support costs too? Most countries don't have the luxury of ignoring costs do they?

I'm not sure why anyone would be "panicking" about the loss of a the latest US boondongle? The US MIC hasn't been building things for fighting performance or efficiency since at least the end of the cold war, and probably before. An f-35 "almost" being shotdown just sound like boeing get's another trillion dollars to build an "f-35+."

All the career generals get to spend the next 10years instructing their minions to write intellectually bankrupt papers about how the US needs to engage our "strategic partners" to match this "new threat". Honestly they could probably just copy the slurry of papers that were written after 9/11 about "low-tech threats" that the next generation of arms needs to deal with. Meanwhile the generals will be taken to the Capital Grill for their weekly lobbyist meetings where they get to drink $40 glasses of wine and eat $100 steaks because they are the most basic, worthless and craven people that our shitty political system has put in charge of trillions of dollars over their careers.

Regardless those people aren't "panicking."
