  • The main thing that struck me about Seattle when I first moved there was all the hills. Coming from Phoenix, where there is zero relief unless you're on one of the sporadic mountains, navigating that kind of terrain required adjustment. My first quarter at UW, a friend took me to a rave off Pioneer Square, and we missed the last bus back to the U-District.

This being before cell phones, let alone Uber/Lyft, that was a long walk home.

  • Sure, but understanding what cards are involves reading. He heard the idiom once and decided it sounded good.

  • I've not been to China, so take this with a portable salt cellar. However, I took a fair number of ICEs in the '90s and arrived in Texas 10 years ago via Amtrak. There were no security measures.

I'd not be surprised if China has actual security versus the security theatre we do with air travel in the U.S.

  • Not to cast doubt on this, but how are aluminum cans recycled if they're also plastic, which is somewhat notorious for not being recyclable? Honest question here, as I sip from an aluminum can.

  • Delirium Tremens (a Trappist beer) is packaged in ceramic.

  • The guy who can manage to run casinos into the ground? I'm not sure he knows what cards are.

  • "You want Greenland? Fuck you, we're taking Canada."

  • The Internal Revenue Service. It's the U.S. tax collection agency, created a bit over a century ago under, shall we say, questionable circumstances.

  • It's gotten to the point that I fear weekends. The junta always pulls its most heinous shit on Friday and Saturday nights, hoping to take advantage of the lull in the news cycle.

It's a far cry from when those two nights were for dancing and drugs.

Also, I'm reminded of a line from V for Vendetta: "Meanwhile, in the former United States ..." with "footage" of violent protests.

  • Christ, it's like Linux distros are about choice!

  • I'm still sticking with KDE.

  • Why/how the fuck Tennessee had jurisdiction is an exercise left for the reader. This sounds a lot like judge shopping.

  • I wish this weren't true, but the reality is we're not just in a post-truth society, but a post-judicial one. This is going to be a wild ride.

  • In all honesty, I don't go there, as they're an extension of the subreddit. Pointing out the failures in, say, Discovery makes me a bigot.

  • In all honesty, I don't make use of federation (and I'm aware of the irony in this specific case). I like this little corner of the internet. While .world would provide wider exposure, I'm about 25 years past going for the widest possible audience when it comes to things other than news.
