  • But the protocol has already been published and there's not much changes needed (except maybe the quantum layer?). Charging a custom license would only push the others to develop a different protocol, one that might not be as private compared to Signal.

  • The cost of these registration services for verifying phone numbers when people first install Signal, or when they re-register on a new device, currently averages around $6 million dollars per year.

That's pretty crazy. Wonder which third party providers they are using. Maybe the identity verification methods we have today is due for some significant changes?

  • Sorry I misframed it. I mean that since there's no need to reveal phone numbers, there could be an opportunity for spammers to increase spam by creating many accounts, and Signal should preemptively find ways where such spams could be reduced. However, I realized after posting that the article says we still need to sign up to signal with a phone number. However, there's still the risk of impersonation (by writing someones username with tiny changes) and people trying to add vulnerable users by username (which they might be using on other platforms) instead of phone number.

  • Yeah it's unfortunate they don't have more core development in Vancouver. For instance, a major part of the Chrome team (and previously Stadia) was in Montreal. Microsoft should have been doing something similar in Vancouver (esp. considering the time zone too).

  • Meanwhile, Microsoft uses it’s Canadian offices as visa waiting rooms before shipping them off to the US.

Microsoft's game division includes Canadian studios like The Coalition and Compulsion Games. The latter literally relied on being acquired by Xbox in order to publish their 2nd (and 1st major) game, now they have grown from 40 to 80 since the game was published. Those studios are still located in where they were founded even after acquisition. In general, Microsoft has a hands-off approach with the studios, allowing them more freedom to develop games.

Sure, the game industry has its own problems and salary issues, which is something people in the industry are trying to improve, but at least the creative & technical talent stays here in Canada rather than being relocated, and many people can work in game studios for a few years before easily moving into other areas of software development.

  • Are those artwork stored as regular files in your game content (e.g. PNG) or embedded in the game? If the former, I wonder if there's some way to integrate with Plex to autocrawl from steam/game folder, then index based on a public game metadata source (which wouldn't legally be able to host the content, but metadata is fine right?)

  • Is it even "AI-powered"?

Ramirez, of Brunswick, Georgia, where her nonprofit is also based, refused to provide details about the algorithm’s inner workings and declined interview requests. By email, she said the tool was a starting point for social workers and did not determine whether a child would be adopted.

Seems like they are throwing in AI just for the headlines.

  • The blog reported that Copeland, a Republican, confirmed that the accounts were run by him, saying they were a “hobby” he used for “getting rid of stress.” 1819 News reported that Copeland asked them to not out him, but they did so anyway, even though it does not appear he had taken any public positions against LGBTQ issues that could be construed as hypocritical.

  • But I paid all of the rent for June since you didn’t have it. And you said that you would pay for July,” she said in Spanish. López had given Del Castillo money orders totaling $1,240, though López doubted the landlords charged that much for the dilapidated 450-square-foot apartment.

This is crazy. $1240 gets you 1 bed in a shaded 450 sqft?

If they were to move to another state, would they be able to get something significantly cheaper? I imagine with a part time job + their moms income, the situation would be much better than homeless in LA.
