  • I’ve been in the industry awhile and your assessment is dead on.

As long as you’re not blindly committing the code, it’s a huge time saver for a number of mundane tasks.

It’s especially fantastic for writing throwaway tooling. Need data massaged a specific way? Ez pz. Need a script to execute an api call on each entry in a spreadsheet? No problem.

The guy above you is a nutter. Not sure if people haven’t tried leveraging LLMs or what. It has a ton of faults, but it really does speed up the mundane work. Also, clearly the person is either brand new to the field or doesn’t even work in it. Otherwise they would have seen the barely functional shite that actual humans churn out.

Part of me wonders if code organization is going to start optimizing for interpretation by these models rather than humans.

  • I’ve been to George Mason and taken classes there. What makes it a right wing school? The closest thing I can think of was Edward Wegman teaching there and the dude was a professed liberal… he just didn’t agree with the math. Overall, I’d say my classes were left leaning. (Or maybe just sane leaning)

I’d say GMU is more of a commuter school/school for international students.

  • He’s one of the first hard tests. You just gotta keep throwing yourself at him until it clicks. I went the other way and did Lady Butterfly which had its own pain. You have to play aggressively. Hesitation is defeat and all of that

  • If you’re using a roomba, the app will typically tell you when to replace your brushes and filter. The filter you can find easy replacements for as well as the little spinning brush. The bigger brushes are harder. You can buy replacements from third party vendors for cheap, but they’re not perfect… and if you have carpeting the roomba will freak out until the third party brushes wear down a bit. After that happens, everything mostly works.

I usually clean out the roomba every week and replace the brushes every 4 months or so. I run mine nightly though (I have kids).

  • So, I’m an amateur… but this was confusing to me. I setup the board as you instructed and tried to play it out. You’re right. The way you described it is impossible…

So! I grabbed a pdf of the book you’re talking about and you missed the first two steps of the solution.

Solution is as follows: (White trading rooks is a winning position with the pawn so far up field)

    1. Rxh7+ Kxh7
    2. Kd5 Kh6

Next is where your part of the solution comes in.. where it discusses that white should move the king farther up the board instead of the tempting Ke6 position. (Because Ke6 would allow the Black king to take the pawn and open the door for the black pawn to become a queen or a draw)

  • Change happens, but my genuine appreciation of her never went away.

Now, I’ve been married well over a decade… and still… the best feeling is the time I spend hugging her in the morning.

We have ups and downs, lulls and adventures. Life’s not all beer and skittles. But, I don’t agree that it becomes mundane.

  • It’s not technically retro but I’ve found Pico-8 a great way to build retro like games! It’s pretends to be a console of a bygone era and gives a bunch of restrictions on size of game and 128x128 resolution.

The app comes with a pixel editor, sfx and music editor, and a code editor built in. The games are easy to share and you can play them on a mobile browser. On the downside, it costs 15 dollars for the app.

  • According to levels.fyi, Microsoft grants about 50-100k (25 percent of their pay?) in stock for their senior engineers each year. Amazon is closer to 200k (which makes up about 50 percent of their pay)

I guess you’re right in that it won’t really affect them, assuming the tax event occurs when the rsu gets vested and not at the sale.

It’d be more likely to affect folks who are in a pre-ipo company, gain a bunch of stock, and then sell it post-ipo. I know several folks at AirBnB who this would have impacted and several at stripe who this probably will impact.
