  • As a librarian who has done some of the exploratory research into starting a local asset-sharing collective, LendEngine is useful, intuitive, and pretty cheap. I have not found anything FOSS that does the equivalent, but any programmers that want to help the movement, have at it.

  • Funny how guys like this “believe life begins at conception” but never go after IVF, despite the number of fertilized eggs destroyed by fertility clinics each year, but they’ll happily force gestating parents to carry dead babies to term. It’s like it’s all about enslaving women (with other gestating parents as collateral damage because conservatives believe they’re women), or something…

  • Scattering a few 5-minute resistance band exercises into my day. They’re easier, more convenient, and less dangerous than weights, they can provide a workout in small spaces, and they offer feedback that can help improve proprioception (which is an issue for me). And by doing a set here and a set there, I don’t resent working out, because I never have to spend an extended chunk of time bored af. I’ve never been evangelical about an exercise before. I have disabilities that can make working out difficult. But given my recent expeiences, I think government-funded resistance band sets with QR codes for free online instruction videos should be available at every public library in the country on request.

TL; DR: Resistance bands build strength and improve health with minimal risk of injury, and their convenience makes it easy to spread workouts over the day to avoid boredom and resentment.

  • I think most people who object to 15-minute cities also object to cities themselves, so it’s easy to convince them that anything that happens in urban areas (and especially anything that benefits city-dwellers) is evil.

  • I’m obviously not in charge, but I can’t really run due to genetic issues, and I’d love to hear about how your (and others’) interaction with green spaces are mediated by the experience of running in/through them. I imagine it creates a very different experience/relationship than a nature walk.

  • I strongly suggest getting them to check out their local library. Library staff often have knowledge and practice working with older people who may have skills deficits. Even if there aren’t formal classes, often, someone will be willing to help. Sometimes, branches have a dedicated tech staffer. That can spread the workload out a bit, and allow them to have someone local to help, as well.

  • NYC is also an edge case, though. Using it to represent the whole country is kind of bonkers. Speeding cameras in a crowded city, where everyone’s aware a lot is going on, and going fast is hard, probably have very different results than speeding cameras in areas that are less concentrated.

  • Jill Stein was an unknown then, and Trump was a novel threat. West has more name recognition, which is everything in politics. The Dems should be scared. But they should also not shit on the leftier end of their electorate constantly. Votes are earned, and no citizen owes their vote to any single party. When the Dems stop assuming the left will vote for their candidates because they don’t have electoral alternatives, maybe some will come out.

Also? Dems didn’t protect my bodily autonomy. I had to get parts of my body removed for full and equal citizenship. They had decades to codify Roe. I voted for Dems my whole adult life. All we got was endless fundraising letters. If the party can’t do their job, they should disband and let someone else do it, not bitch about leftist voters.

  • I’m very curious as to how the same Constitution that can’t keep up with upgrades in arms tech over time was able to ban consorting with Marxists when Marx himself wouldn’t be born for decades. Neat trick. Also, have these people read founding father Thomas Paine? Pretty sure he and Marx would have hung out and shot the shit if they had the chance. (I don’t mean the librarians. I have no doubt they were forced into this, for the most part. They, I assume, have read a book.)

  • Frozen Costco foods heated up and put together. Put some (heated) frozen broccoli in a box of mac and cheese. Eat fish sticks with a bagged salad. How about a pre-prepared frozen Asian noodle dish with veggies? If you’re careful about the nutrition stuff, it’s a real step up from takeout in terms of health and saving money. I know because I only stepped up and started doing it a few months ago. Good luck.

  • Yep. The difference is emotional, not material. Zuck, like most billionaires, seems happy to sleep on his pile of Scrooge McDuck money and fuck people over. Muskrat does all that, but he asks something more of us than our money and our lives. He wants, maybe even needs, us to love and respect him while he does it. And that sets rage-fires in the brain-parts.
