  • How long before the GOP is united in its support for hamas? I have always wondered how the GOP would deal with Russia’s Iranian allies when things came to a head. There are lots of wedges trying to break the GOP. Having to support hamas because they are a Russian ally might be the biggest one ever.

Gonna be a wild couple weeks I think.

  • I don’t know about Argentina in any specific way, so I’m only speculating. When national banks start printing money and causing runaway inflation, it’s almost always because they have to service debt denominated in a foreign currency, and have no possibility of doing so. Dollar debt will fucking kill you if the US Fed raises rates which they’ve been doing a whole lot of the last couple years.

Bottom line, you can’t elect your way out that sort of a crisis. Sooner or later you have to pay or default. No magic bullet. No anarcho Capitalist, secret third way. It’s snake oil.

  • How many games game out this year? Thousands. There is absolutely zero possibility that MS or anyone else is anywhere near holding monopoly status on the production of entertainment software. Even if they bought EVERYTHING new creators would enter the space the very next day.

  • Tempted to just down vote and move on. But, you are very right about the feds intentions. They are terrified of wage growth. There is a school of macroeconomists who think wage growth is essentially locking in inflation and is the scariest thing that can happen in an inflationary environment. They are idiots and it seems not to have occurred to them that we could have an actual labor shortage and wages just have to go up per supply and demand.

Anyway your last paragraph is some bonkers bullshit. The executive branch and the president specifically is not in control of the federal reserve and in fact by design is meant to have limited influence on the actions of the fed governors. Also, this entire thread is people twisting themselves in knots to ignore good news for workers so they can maintain their view that Biden is fucking up.

  • Trust = one or more independent organizations making secret agreements to mutual benefit.

    Mergers: not a trust.

Monopoly = a single organization that controls an overwhelming amount of the market.

Microsoft buying a publisher that put out 2 games in 2023: not a monopoly.

  • The lax restrictions on nazi speech. It’s now part of the platform. The platform tacitly endorses hatred. Your attention legitimizes the platform and the nazis. It’s time to walk away, you have a moral obligation.

I get it you have an addiction to the website. We need to start talking about social media addiction without sneering. It’s a dopamine release machine and we are big stupid apes. I’m here on lemmy because it is like methadone to get me off Reddit.

  • It was a bit more complicated. It was a weird time. There was something that looked like science saying some scary things and there was a strain of skepticism about western medicine on the hippie fringe which, was on some level a left movement. But, more-so it was an anti bush movement than anything you would call leftist.

Then you had this whole strain of back to the land crunchy church conservatives that also bought into the anti vaccine stuff.

I know a lot of people who had kids during the height of the frenzy that fell into both of those camps. The circles overlapped a lot. The lefty-ish hippies mostly vaccinated in the time since. The churchy ones turned into trumpy antivax true believers. The circles do not overlap at all anymore.

For a short period of time around when our oldest was born, it was not crazy to be cautious. It was all debunked by the time our youngest was born.

FWIW, I make vaccines for a living and my wife is a scientist. We are not fringe weirdos. We vaccinated, though we altered and stretched the schedule a bit with our oldest.

  • The competition! lol! Activision is going to put out 2 games this year. Whatever will we play now that these 2 games are owned by a platform holder?

You are correct though that there are a million cool ass games you can play right now and put your money in the pockets of people who make THINGS instead of people who make value for shareholders.

  • Granted I don’t exactly run in the conspicuous consumption crowd, so maybe I’m out of the loop. Cope Luwak was a thing I heard about in the late 90s but have never seen in the world, ever.

I suppose this is one of those products that has a reputation for being expensive so rich people buy it to flex and that creates some demand. Like gold pizzas or whatever other dumb shit gaudy nouveau riche assholes are doing to get attention.

I’m sure there are places in the world where you can forage the shits and have something unique, but I highly doubt that what makes its way to fintech bros in manhattan has any real value at all. Just a cruel gimmick.

  • I would assume that once you have a first mover on this sort of thing the incentives to flip go WAY up. Probably are only a few really good deals on the table and it’s first come first serve for anybody that can serve trump to the prosecutor.

Bet we see a big name flip in the next 72hrs.

  • Number 3 is an unstable condition that will quickly collapse into scenario 1 or 2. There are 18 gop members from districts Biden won in 2020. They can get elected as moderate dems easily if they want.

Game theory wise it goes like this. They call the motion and a speaker vote process starts. No winner (#3). Dems work quietly to see if they can forge a majority(#2), KM works quietly to try and pull a few dems. Getting dem votes for McCarthy is almost impossible (he needs too many and there just aren’t a lot of marginal dem members). If word gets out that either of those scenarios are looking fruitful, the freedom caucus will fold at the next vote (#1)

The likelihood of them having to fold after a day or two of votes and re-seat McCarthy is 9 in 10 or better. That other 1 in 10 is speaker Jeffries speaking for a new dem majority of 1 or 2 seats.

  • There is no threat in the motion to vacate. I doubt they follow through. Potential outcomes:

    1. The vote for a few days and are forced to give up and KM remains speaker.
    2. GOP members from moderate districts decide there future is more secure if they join the Democratic Party and Jeffries gets the gavel.
    3. The house remains without a speaker until the session ends.

There is no possible outcome where a more conservative member gets the gavel. None.

  • “Conservative” in the US is not a word that describes a set of policy preferences. Not even a suite of psychological proclivities. A conservative is a person who supports the tribe, without question or reservation. You cannot undermine trump’s conservative credentials, loyalty to trump is how the base defines conservatism. Anyone who tells you not to support trump cannot, in their view, be a conservative.

Doomed to fail from the start.

  • It’s an incredibly common sentiment, I am not sure it should be. It leads to more harm than good I think. You are not on a team with people who have the same skin color as you through all time. Being born in a place does not soil you with the past follies of the people that also lived there.

Should a German kid whose grandparents came to Germany from Tunisia in the 60s feel culturally responsible for the holocaust? If you say yes, you have to ask WHY. If you say no, you are probably implying a judgment about who is a REAL German and who isn’t.

    The whole concept sucks.

  • Do you think it’s weird to use the word “we” in that sentence? I was not involved, you didn’t make any of those decisions. People you don’t know did horrible shit to other people you don’t know.

There is not a we, I am responsible for my own decisions and actions. I feel completely free to look at the actions of others as despicable without any ownership of their actions. Why do people just accept that they are somehow tainted by the sins of people who came before?
