  • Plastics manufacturers say loosening the rules will encourage more people to compost.

More like plastics manufactures say loosening the rules will allow them to greenwash their products and increase profits at the cost of our planet.

  • Leave out the salt unless you want more long term control. Vinegar on the leaves in the heat of the day should be enough, but you need to use the hardware store stuff (30-40%) instead of the grocery store stuff (5-9%). Organic vapor respirator is recommended, it's strong stuff that will hurt you.

  • This "asking to be removed from flood maps" is as common as people disputing their property valuation for tax purposes. In the immediate term, no owner wants to go from not in a flood plain to on a flood plain. Of course the reality is that maps don't dictate nature's behavior, but property value goes down in addition to property expense going up.

One possible solution is government buying out flood prone areas, but I've only seen this happen in more affluent communities. This still leaves some risk, though, since there will always be a threshold where there is some flood (or hurricane or wildfire or windstorm or hailstorm...) risk, but not enough risk to be relocated by the government.

  • Further down the article they quote someone saying they don't think this is the actual cause. Apparently the mites and virus are in most hives, so they're not convinced it's the cause of the die off rather than just a symptom of a weakened hive.

  • To emphasize how unfortunate it is, the first dose of the measles vaccine isn't given until age 12 to 15 months. That means that even if parents fully intend to vaccinate their kid, they're still vulnerable to measles for at least that first year.
