  • Solitary confinement is absolutely torture, and a supermax prison like USPS Florence ADMAX sometimes make people question if they even exist anymore.

But for people like Elon it is the only appropriate punishment. They need to be isolated from everyone and everything.

  • Yeah I remember those. Where I grew up that style of ring pull was the dominant style.

One reason why that style was retired in many places was to reduce waste. When you had a ring pull tab that peeled off, most people threw that away separately. I remember seeing those tabs being thrown all over the place.

  • This reminds me of soda/beer can designs. You know the hole in the ring tab? I used to believe it was there only for it to provide better grip for your finger when opening it. Turned out it was also there so you can fit a straw and have a way of stabilizing it.

Most people had no idea about that.

  • Yeah. They literally said that that the lack of evidence is actually the evidence, and that it is proof of a hyperintelligent criminal who has lead a life of crime without ever being caught. And that is why they have no criminal records... because they are criminals who haven't been caught yet!

  • Ironically jokes about the internet raising children is very old. There was a comic strip in Mad Magazine from the late 90s that had a boy go ask his mom 'mom, if God made everything, who made God?' She replies to go ask his dad, and when he does his dad replies, ' go ask the internet!'

It is still funny, but given the incredible amount of disinformation out there it just is a really bad idea.

  • I remember in the first few years after 9/11 when you had Islamophobes talking about Islamic radicalism and comparing western culture to Islamic culture in what was, retrospectively, the most arrogant and extremely naieve view imaginable. Basically envisioning the entirety of the west in the late 90s and early 2000s as the west always being like that and the then status quo was done via some philosophical debate and innate characteristics instead of whatever was politically and economically convenient at the time.

I wonder where those people are today? Seeing just how legit fragile their whole order really was and how quickly it is unraveling.

  • Fuck me the baboon image was serious nightmare fuel.

Can you imagine if we somehow were able to get 100% accurate images of dinosaurs (with the feathers... they were birds, not reptiles, and warm blooded, too) and the T-rex chirped and kinda looked like a giant chicken?

  • As a Canadian the developments that are happening right now make me highly opposed to the gun bans that have been happening. Almost all semi-automatic rifles are banned and it isn't doing a dent to the crime. Licensed Canadian gun owners were never a problem. Canada never had a gun problem even when there was next to no gun control here.

We need community defense and a ready made resistance force, like the home guard in Britain during ww2.

  • I made BBS posts in the early-mid 90s. They don't exist anymore, because at that time the only BBSes I had any access to were local guys running one off a personal computer (and as such weren't even available 24/7). The DMs and chats that happened there? If those guys actually kept the logs and kept transferring them from HD to HD, then I'll be damned... but chances are likely they have disappeared into the ether.
