  • Fear mongering is an interesting thing. You have people who call articles about COVID or climate change fear mongering. Then you have other people who called the NO campaign fear mongering. And there seems to be zero overlap between those 2 groups.

  • It's unreasonable to live there then. Your choice relies on the rest of the world paying the price of unnecessary car trips and the infrastructure for it. And not just now but people in the future will bear the consequences of your decision to live in a place that requires that.

  • Name a single culture that adopted the values and pracrices of a nation they defeated in warfare.

This is fairly common throughout history. The Mongols did it to such an extent that the Chinese considered them Chinese when they ruled China. It also happened a lot when various empires conquered Egypt or when Alexander conquered the Persians. It happens more often than not.

  • I used this month's installer and saw a couple things I hadn't noticed in last month's version. First, where previously I'd used, systemd-boot, now there's a default choice of grub which I haven't used in years and limine which I'd never heard of. Also, the installer picked up my Yubikey as an HSM token.

The idea isn't new or obscure but there is an academic source. Have you never heard of alt-right idiots complaining about soy boys? You know they are referring to men who have been emasculated because of aversion to meat and consumption of estrogen-like soy products?

  • Meat eating is tightly connected to manliness. Also ideas of freedom. People think doing away with meat would mean more austerity and an attack on their individuality. You could sit someone down, join the dots for them linking meat to environmental catastrophe that affects them and they will still laugh it off with a vapid joke like in the meme.

  • The number 0 still exists. The chart does show arbitrary values higher and lower than the line. Choosing a lower limit other than 0 is a dishonest choice. It's the first lesson I taught kids about when I touched on media literacy. Ask yourself why the author chose the mode they used and any arbitrary choices they made.
