  • This is a good progression, but I think we need a general strike. These arseholes will not leave willingly and simple protests seem too polite. Public pressure is not enough. There needs to be corporate pressure. Heavy corporate pressure.

  • We have a few acres we had to clear of blackberries and many noxious weeds as well as normal weeds. Bberries need the rootballs ripped up as do plenty of the noxious weeds. For the normal weeds we've done the salt/dawn/vinegar mix as we try not using the nasty chemicals whenever possible (we use a well). Vinegar only has very temporary weed control effects. I've used it plenty as I bought a pallet of the strong stuff which is quite expensive, btw. I am toying with tossing just plain rock salt out on our gravel area to control the weeds there. I am trying to figure out what harm that might do otherwise before I do so.

I also wonder about the use of dishsoap. The multi-syllabic chemical ingredients it contains are plenty (not as bad as weed killer chems, I know), so is it better to use when you have to use so much more (and repetitively)? IDK. We settled on Bonide for now which is supposed to be an organic weed control product. It seems to work, but I won't crow about it. Weeds are still very resilient!

  • Newegg was the nerd's paradise 10+ years ago. I would spend thousands each year on my homelab back then. They had great customer service and bent over backwards for them. Then they got bought out and squeezed and passed that squeeze right down to the customers. Accusing customers of damaging parts, etc. Lots of slimeball stuff. They also wanted to be like amazon, so they started selling beads, blenders and other assorted garbage alongside tech gear.

After a couple of minor incidents with them I saw the writing on the wall and went to amazon who were somewhat okay then. Once amazon started getting bad, I turned to B&H and fleaBay. I don't buy as much electronic stuff as I used to, but when I do these two are working....so far.

  • Yes, fuck Newegg (and amazon too). I've been using B&H for disks and I have no complaints about them. They have the Seagate Ironwolf Pro 24TB at $479 currently, but last week it was on sale for $419. (I only look at 5yr warranty disks.)

I was not in a position to take advantage as I've already made my disk purchase this go around, so I'll wait for the next deep discount to hit if it is timely.

  • I found Mint rather simple to install. That said, I am a techie. I am using several different distros in my house, but I wanted to live in Mint for a while to see how well a non-techie might fare. My reasoning was that since Ubuntu (Mint's parent) is rather ubiquitous, there is more development and more attention paid to support and troubleshoot issues. So far, so good. Yes, being tech literate does help, but I think a non-techie could live with Linux. And over time, the environment will become more known like Windows is now.

  • I didn't really perceive a method on how to "stand up" to trump in this article. "Don't take the bait" seems anemic at best. It does lay out some methods of the MAGA regime as they bait (Mexico) thusly:

"To that end, every tool in the kit will be trotted out: official and unofficial slander, media smears, taxes, sanctions, border closings, visa cancellations, treaty disputes — carefully calibrated to start small so that they can be ramped up as needed. And all designed, moreover, to back Sheinbaum into a damned-if-you-do (provoking retaliation), damned-if-you-don’t (green light for further encroachment), no-win situation."

Those that are actually aware of the shitshow are already aware of this for the most part. This is their method of operation almost everywhere. How do we diffuse or render it ineffective? Not taking the bait just doesn't seem like a substantial enough of an answer because the shitshow keeps rolling.

  • It is either a type of rubberized material degrading or one piece of plastic in the group. Being a home-labber/gamer I have gone through a couple hundred mice easily. In addition to Logitech, I've had lots of stock MS/Dell/HP and even Sun mice. A few can get this condition with the materials. Often it will be a rubberized component, but sometimes it is a plastic part. Like the mouse wheel is a more common part that gets sticky, but the rest of the mouse is okay. Nothing happened other than it sat around for a long time. It could be that the last user had grubby fingers stained orange from cheetos whilst using that mouse and that lent somehow to the degradation. Hard to say. Plastic does degrade for sure and maybe our grubby mitts help?

  • I did check to see what permissions and data it wants access to. None. That seems like a good sign.

A nefarious app might also want permissions to see all your contacts.

Edit to clarify: The app install page says only "Data Not Collected". I would presume they would list IP and/or location if that were amongst the data collected as I have seen other apps do, but I am certainly no expert. The dev is All U Chart, Inc.
