  • Worth noting that the wiimote just uses Bluetooth, so it doesn’t take any specialized equipment to connect to your computer. And Dolphin has built in support for it. The sensor bar was also just a pair of infrared LEDs; All of the actual “sensing” happened at the wiimote directly. So you can just throw a wireless sensor bar (like $15 on amazon) underneath your computer monitor, and it will work fine.

  • Yup, America was content to sit back and quietly support the allied forces with lend-lease, but the nazis were increasingly popular in America at the time. But then Pearl Harbor happened, and gave the country a nice big target to focus on.

  • Yeah, the early 3D printed guns were garbage, but modern ones are much more durable. Changes in design have allowed for the use of off-the-shelf parts for the most important moving pieces, which means you have the durability of those off-the-shelf parts instead. The 3D print is basically just holding the machined parts together.

  • I gave up TV for a while, but built an automated Plex server about a year ago and have fallen in love with it. I find myself watching more shows than in probably the past decade. My wife was less than thrilled about the initial cost (and the fact that she lost some closet space to the server) but now she uses it every day and refuses to ever let me get rid of it.

For the unaware, Plex is a program that allows you to self-host a streaming service like Netflix or Hulu. You add media to the server, and it will automatically match it to the relevant show, download metadata, and make it available to your client devices to stream. The free version is fine for most small setups, but there is a paid license you can get to unlock all of the functionality; Most users opt to just get a lifetime license, so it’s not an ongoing cost.

If you prefer open source, Jellyfin is a good alternative. There’s a little bit more of a learning curve, because the client apps aren’t widely available and it often requires using something like Kodi to stream instead. But the idea is the same; Host a server, throw media at it, and be able to stream.

Automating the media collection is possible, and is what takes it from “this is a cool side hobby that I’ll abandon in a few months because the upkeep is a pain in the ass” to “this is now my go-to for shows I want to watch, and the upkeep is minimal.” Programs exist that allow your server to automatically search for media Linux ISOs, download it, and add it to your server. So adding new media Linux ISOs is simply a matter of requesting it to be added, and then the server handles all the rest automatically and you’ll have it available as soon as the download finishes.

My one big complaint about Plex is actually the lack of live IPTV support. You can integrate a digital TV tuner into your server to be able to automatically DVR live content. But Plex used to support an IPTV extension, which allowed you to add your own IPTV channels and stream them on any device. Plex did away with that extension support, because they have been pushing their own IPTV channels and they didn’t want to compete with the extension.

  • I also don’t, simply because my high school had a string of vandalism where some kid was pulling all of the water fountains out of the walls. Like he was just ripping them straight out. There’s no way they could support someone putting their entire body weight on it to shove the spout up their ass.

  • The military is the worst about it, because a lot of their gear, maneuvers, operations, etc are known almost entirely as acronyms or standard phonetic alphabet abbreviations.

“Yeah so my LT had us CTET the AWAK so we could get to the LZ. But then the Tangos started SCF on our AO, so we had to RFWP with our MGs until the APC could get in place.”
And fellow military dudebros will nod along in agreement.

  • I’m good friends with someone who worked at SpaceX. It’s sort of an open secret that Elon has an entire team of people designated specifically to keeping him away from the engineers. Their entire job is to run interference and keep him distracted, so he can’t go marching into the engineers’ areas and ruin all of their work. Because apparently they have learned that if he is given free reign, he’ll tell the engineers to do a bunch of impossible shit, fire them all when they say they can’t, and then the management is left scrambling to hire new engineers.

  • More like microscopic fidget bubble poppers.

When the computer wants a bit to be a 1, it pops it down. When it wants it to be a 0, it pops it up.

If it were like a punch card, it couldn’t be rewritten as writing to it would permanently damage the disc. A CD-RW is basically a microscopic punch card though, because the laser actually burns away material to write the data to the CD.

  • The profiles can be nice for setting most things, but having it default all of your games to Fullscreen instead of Borderless Windowed (and no way to change what the default setting is anywhere in the program) should be fucking criminalized.

  • Even with integrations, a lot of the automatic replies basically boil down to “yes, thanks” and “no thank you” to every text. It isn’t even like… A longer message. It’s just two or three words, tops. If I’m going to use AI to write my texts, it’s going to be for something longer than a “yes lol” text.

  • To expand on this: You can migrate accounts fairly easily. You can export your subscribed communities, and import them into your new account. So the only real thing you’re losing is your post history, but even that is seen as a bonus by many users who are looking to burn their old account.

  • Worth noting that the masks in the cabin aren’t designed to keep you awake. They’re just designed to keep you alive. They’re basically just hydrogen peroxide and a catalyst, which mixes when you pull the mask down. The resulting chemical reaction produces a small amount of oxygen for a short time. This is also why the instructions say to put your own mask on before helping any children; You only have 15-30 seconds of usable consciousness before you pass out, so you need the mask to stay awake long enough to help anyone else. The pilots are the only ones who actually have masks good enough to stay awake, and that’s why they immediately dive to a breathable altitude.

Also, the entire cabin would immediately fog from the sudden pressure and temperature change. We’re talking “can’t even see your fingertips when your arm is outstretched” levels of fog.

And while we’re talking about it, the cabin would suddenly be cold. Like absolutely fucking freezing.

Lastly, your ears will painfully pop, and will likely ring for a while afterwards. The sudden pressure change will feel like you got slapped on the ears.

  • Yup. This is also why protestors are encouraged to wear plain black clothes, like a hoodie, gloves, sunglasses, mask, and black jeans. When everyone is wearing nearly identical clothes, it introduces a lot of reasonable doubt in any resulting security camera footage. It’s called Black Bloc.

  • I’d argue that the word are unarguably the killer’s. After all, they were written on the bullet cases that were used to kill the guy.

Whether or not Luigi is the killer is still being decided by the courts. If they had said the words were Luigi’s, there would be an issue. But they didn’t say that; They said “CEO killer” instead, which simply attributes the words to whoever killed the dude.

  • I think part of the point is just to show that they can be touched. It would be like walking up and saying “bang bang” with finger guns instead of actually shooting them. It’s a way of going “I could have done it. You’d be dead if I wanted it. This is a reminder and a warning that you only rule because the plebs allow it.”

I agree, there are better things to do to CEOs, especially for companies as shitty as Enron. But if CEOs are on high alert like they are now, then a pie to the face would be a good way of keeping them anxious. It would tell them “your security failed. They need to succeed every time, but the masses only need to succeed once.”
