I can almost guarantee someone was trying to pass a drug test. Fake piss became easy to buy, and even include things like under-belt harnesses and fake penises. So even if someone is in the room watching you take the test, it still looks legit. So modern drug tests will also check to see if the urine is at (or at least very near) body temperature.

And this presents a problem with fake piss kits, because the surface of your skin doesn’t typically stay at body temperature; It’s usually anywhere from 90-95° instead of 98. Which means that even if you wear the belt pack all day, your body heat won’t be enough to warm the fake piss up enough.

So some people will resort to microwaving it just before they walk in. Get it to like 103° at the gas station across the street, (warm, but not enough to burn you when you wear it) so that by the time you walk across the street to take your drug test, it has cooled down to body temperature.

You should look up the Just World fallacy. It’s a pattern of thinking where people innately believe that the world is just, because it helps them avoid the uncomfortable truth that bad things can happen to good people.

Once you understand it, you start to see it everywhere. For instance, it is the basis for modern conservative social policy. It’s what drives the “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” mentality, because conservatives want to believe that if someone is destitute it is a failing on their end. Because if you accept that good, hard working people can fall on hard times, then you also need to accept that it can happen to you. And that’s a very scary thought, so many people will outright reject it.

Your mom asking what you did to deserve it is just another example. She doesn’t want to believe that a bad thing happened to you for no reason. Because that means the world is unjust, and that’s a scary thought.

Basically, they had the ability to grant wishes, but didn’t want to. So you had to find a way to force them into it, usually by trapping them and striking a deal to release them if they granted your wish.

Yup, I work with 4/0 (0000) cable pretty regularly, for things like generators or powering large systems. We have a few trunks full of cable, and it takes a crew of 2 or 3 to actually lay it because it’s so heavy. Usually one person pushing the trunk along, one focuses on uncoiling it from the trunk, and one focuses on actually laying the cable. We use five conductors at a time (one neutral, three 120v hots leads, and a ground,) so it’s a big bundle. Each cable weighs a little over a pound per foot, and there are five bundled together. So a 150’ coil can easily weigh 750-800 pounds.

EICAR test strings are strings of text that can be used to test an antivirus. Basically, you bury the file somewhere, and see if your AV picks it up. The joke being that if they’re storing your password in plaintext (a big no-no from a security standpoint) then their AV will clamp down on the database once you create your account and the test string is embedded.

It wouldn’t work in this instance, unfortunately; EICAR test strings are only meant to work when embedded in files that are shorter than 128 bytes. And every database is almost certainly larger than that.

Until they don’t. All it would take is one malicious actor (competing company, spurned employee, data thief, etc) wrecking/stealing their entire database with an injection attack.

It’s an SQL injection joke.

Basically, when dealing with databases, you can use SQL to search or modify the data in that database. By default, you can do this by polling the database with an SQL query. But this introduces a vulnerability called SQL injection. Basically, imagine if instead of filling in a name in the “Name” field, you filled in an SQL query. If the database admins haven’t protected themselves against it, then the database will happily run that query; You have just injected an SQL query into their database. Maybe you’re a malicious attacker, looking to get a virus onto the system, or looking to extract the data.

Protecting the database from injection is done with something called sanitizing. Basically, you set up filters to disallow SQL, so it can’t touch your database. In this comic, the database admins didn’t do that, so they were unprotected.

The actual SQL uses the student’s middle name to search for any tables named “Students” and permanently delete it. The joke is that when the school admin staff enters his name into their database, it will delete any tables named “Students” and wreck their database.

Yup, medics will just wrap the entire hand in tape and gauze to keep it stable, then transport to the hospital. Because it’s always possible that removal will require surgery, so they want to be near an operating room before they try.

Yeah, Harry just wanted to steal everything and vanish. His primary concern was simply getting away without any witnesses, so they could ghost with the money they had stolen. He wasn’t going to bother with petty theft, and was content to stay on the down low if it meant they’d be safe from the law.

Marv was portrayed as being the dumb one, but he was outright sociopathic in his actions, and had zero qualms about blatantly harming others if it meant he’d get famous. His primary concern was with garnering infamy and making a name for themselves as thieves. He wanted everyone to know that the Wet Bandits had stolen from them. And that is diametrically opposed to Harry’s goal of ghosting after their big score.

It’s a reference to Asuka (the character on the GPU), and a very creepy scene near the end of the series. The main character jerks it over Asuka’s unconscious body, and we see his hand covered in white fluid (just like the thermal paste is covering the hand in this pic) afterwards.

It’s a symbolic scene that is meant to turn the audience against the main character. Basically, he starts his journey with a very similar shot of his hand covered in blood. And the scene of him jerking it over an unconscious girl’s body is basically the end of his journey as a “good” guy. Evangelion is a very psychological show; The series is meant to turn a bunch of tropes on their heads, and it actively works against the “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” trope. It accepts that what doesn’t kill you probably leaves you traumatized. So by the end of the series, all of the characters who started out as heroes have ended up broken and hurting, and are basically treated like Vietnam veterans.

I mean… It’s not wrong. The main character is a fucking creep.

If they’re a repair tech, they have thermal paste in bulk. That was maybe $3 worth of paste. Probably much less.

At that point just get a Mac. Gnome has the same “we know better than you do. If you want to do something outside of our extremely specific use cases, you’re using it wrong and should figure something else out” mentality that Apple does.

Basically, the law will set an acceptable age gap where consent can happen; If the gap is 5 years, then a 17 year old won’t be able to consent to sex with a 30 year old, but can with an 18-22 year old. So it helps maintain the “this is obviously a child who was groomed by a creepy middle-aged person” statutory rape laws, while still allowing kids to date each other.

This is something that has always interested me. Let’s say a group of specialists (in different areas of study) go for a walk through the park together. They’ll each have entirely different thoughts about the walk, simply because they have been trained to notice different things.

Maybe one is an avian biologist, and notices a rare bird; The other specialists don’t even notice that it is extraordinary.

Maybe one is an architect, and notices how the trails are snaked through the park with careful consideration to a specific design style.

Maybe one is a child development specialist, and notices how the playgrounds have been designed to encourage kids to play together with group activities, rather than isolating them with individual activities.

Maybe one is a civil engineer, and notices how the entire park is a former landfill that has been buried, and they can identify many of the strategies that builders used to safely manage things like off-gassing, water runoff, or low spots as garbage breaks down below the park.

Maybe one is an artist, who notices several idyllic spots they could return to with an easel and their pastels.

But the point is that even though they all went on the walk together, they all had vastly different experiences simply because they were trained to notice different details.
