  • In a fair and just world, the leader of the body would be put into prison until the Court's decision was applied. Each new leader would come to this fate until the situation was rectified to the ruling's satisfaction. Essentially, it's a contempt of court condition, and the person in charge is responsible for satisfying the order. That's why they're in charge, and why they (at least in most cases) get paid more.

We seem to have forgotten that actions should have consequences other than trivial fiscal or paper declaration penalties.

  • The article doesn't actually say what is does, just that it's function is to ensure the loading of film occurs at a constant speed which, it is implied, keeps the audio in sync. It doesn't say how it does it, how it's connected, or whether it has a true control function or is just a monitoring device which is used by the projectionist to make alterations (using another part of the system) should the operation de-sync. The only operator they talked to claims to neve have interacted with the device.

  • I guess a better marketing ploy would have been

    Lemmy Sez
    Fuck Spez

A good rhyme and well-justified text can do a lot of hard work.

  • Thread like these remind me how weird I am. I get up and go to bed basically the same time every day so that I'm not fighting (effectively) jet lag between weekdays and weekends. At the end of the day I get into bed, turn out the lights room, and do about 20-40 minutes of scrolling (no blue light filter). Then I set my phone (which is on DnD automatically) on the charger, feeling like I've caught up with the world and go to sleep.

I started the "same time every day" schedule in my mid-20s when I was having problems getting up for a job that was earlier than I was used to. I read about jet lag effects and Seasonal Affective Disorder (variable diurnal cycles/short winter days) and got a sunrise simulator to even out my day - or at least my mornings. It seems boring, but in a lot of ways it's freeing not to worry about being too tired or not being able to get to sleep. [admission: I have a mentally tiring job, so my brain is ready to switch off at the end of the day, which helps]

  • Oh, you're a fun troll.

I'm not sure whether to ask you

    a) why, if you "don’t want LGBTQ+ people to not feel welcome" you;re okay with a community who's basic rule system includes making LGBTQ+ people unwelcome or...

    b) if you were brought up in a rich family, would it be unkind or offensive to post about people who have food or shelter insecurity and blame the rich for their problems? Should all socialism or welfare communities be blocked so that you are not offended by people who don't have money?

  • Religion is about what a person believes. LGBTQ+ is about who a person is.

If you want to hate people for who they are, do it somewhere that isn't Lemmy.world. If you don't want to see people posting about your belief, go make your own Lemmy server and defederate.

  • But the second mouse gets the cheese.

  • So in his telling he was exonerated of wrongdoing

"Well that's it, boys. I've been redeemed. The preacher's Board of Trustees done warshed away all my sins and transgressions. It's the straight and narrow from here on out, and heaven everlasting's a well funded retirement is my reward."

  • He should have just taken lavish, free vacations and accepted expensive sports memorabilia. If you're going to do consulting, it's better to have your wife take that position for an excessive salary. The Supreme Court has already ruled, internally, that those are fully allowable and have no bearing whatsoever on their job performance.

  • When asked for comment a Senior Executive, who asked not to be named, responded, "At that price point we're rather have them pirate the shows than have to deal with the customer service and billing headaches."

  • My facebook "memories" over the last month have been filled with images of me and my family stranded at various airports due to flight delays and cancellations. Flying in the summer is fraught with complications, and has been for as long as I've lived.

  • Safety squints

  • You get outta here with your "reading the rules" stuff.
    lol

  • IKR? The massive influx of near-zero-friction signups is bound to create a large userbase of new/shiny window shoppers who quickly lose interest. I've got a couple of friends who seem to be attempting to create a presence there, but otherwise it's a terrible feed. Of course it's a terrible feed for me because I've done jack-shit on instagram and the algorithm is just throwing stuff at my wall to see what sticks. I've got ladies with large asses in spandex, some quote-meme spammers, and Jair Bolsonaro filling up my feed - that's just a fucking dumpster fire.

I'll keep the app (properly sandboxed) but I doubt I'll interact with it any more than mastodon or Post - which is monthly at best. I'd say that I dropper Twitter last year, but really I dropped it a decade ago as being useless as both a location for discourse and a source for, well, anything of interest to me.

  • Projectors certainly have their limitations, but I really like that mine just disappears into the ceiling when I’m not using it instead of taking up my entire wall.

  • To be specific, exercise for health reasons increases CO2 levels for no reason other than to extend your life and, very possibly, to increase your muscle mass which increases your resting metabolic rate - you literally are generating CO2 with the effect of increasing your CO2 generation rate and the total duration you'll be producing CO2.

In a way, this hits exactly in my rant about where we worry about CO2 production: Getting out and getting in shape, or walking and biking places for fun is a negative but, like enjoying a reasonably-sized portion of animal protein in our diet, this is not the primary driver in causing Global Climate Change and there's a shit-ton of low hanging fruit (animal meat?) to be had but the people who make policy are the biggest offenders. We're literally banding together in the hundred of thousands to forego a chicken breast or hamburger so some celebrity can wipe out the entire savings by flying between their home and the harbor where their yacht is docked.

  • Sure. This paper in Nature, estimates walking and cycling to generate 0.26 and 0.14kg CO2, respectively, given the diet in the most economically developed areas (I noted "typical western", not world wide or average) in my post). The EPA calculates gasoline at 8887g CO2 per gallon, so a car which gets 39mpg (note I mentioned fuel efficient - not average) is around 0.14 kg CO2 per km (8887/39mpg/1.628km) and a car which gets 21 MPG is around 0.26 kg CO2/km (which actually is close to the average vehicle).

Nature bases their estimates on full-replacement calories for the energy burned. YkmMV based on style, location, traffic, weather, and a bunch of other factors. Walking and biking is healthier for you and will likely extend your life and increase your resting metabolic rate (=the CO2 you create just lying about), but I'm not counting that against the walkers/bikers in this equation ;-)

Note: I walk quite a bit for fun - logged about 250km on my vacation last fall - and I bike when the weather is nice - often not even to go anywhere I need to; I'm just adding to the carbon problem for personal health and entertainment purposes.

  • Indeed. Loved the concept and have had some really great properties. If I can sus out the specific property now, I'll see if they have a direct book and use that instead. I don't mind the simple stuff on exit, that's just polite, nor a small cleaning fee if the nightly cost is low (I think of it as a turning fee), but I hate having to play whack-a-mole on the site to find a property in budget when half of the fees aren't included in the top line.

Except for large parties (me and the parents, or another family joining) in the same location, or the need for a full kitchen, there are few places where ABnB/VRBO has better pricing than major hotels with suites.

  • And remember, biking or walking is no more environmentally sound - per person-km travelled, using a typical western diet - than a fuel-efficient automobile with a single passenger, but a private jet produces more than 10,000x the CO2 per km. Everyone can do their part to reduce overall CO2, but the rich and powerful are destroying the planet at a rate several orders of magnitude faster than you or I simply because it's convenient for them.

We should probably stop squabbling over who's corporate version of highly-processed, manufactured, plant-based meat and food products we're going to substitute for animal proteins if we really care about worldwide carbon levels.
