  • Everything I have found says that one or two cigars a week has a fairly minimal impact on cancer risk. Daily or multiple a day is probably bad though.

Before Covid, I was at about one a week, now maybe one a month during the winter and a bit more often in the summer. I usually only buy cigars when I'm on a trip to somewhere that's cheaper than Canada, and I'll stock up there. Fortunately, being Canadian, I can go to Cuba as well as to the US to get cigars, so my humidors have a nice combination of Cubans and new world (I have one for strictly Cubans and the second for new world). Otherwise, cigars here are stupid expensive and I'd probably only have a few a year tops (a $5 USD cigar in the states is often $20CAD or more here).

  • I grew up around both, for simply telling time, digital is far better. Analog though to me gives a better sense of the passage of time I guess you could call it? Like, you can see the hour hand has moved a distance after a little while; or if I want to do something for half an hour, I just have to watch for when the minute hand is pointing 180 degrees away from where it was when I started, things like that.

  • Practice can help with both of those. I'm fairly introverted, but I constantly force myself to say stuff to people even if I think it might be cringey. Of course, in the beginning, it was, but eventually I got better at talking to people. Now, I can make friends with my co-workers fairly well, and articulate my points coherently enough (and importantly, in real-time) that I am able to bring people over to 'my side' with reasonable success.

Down side is, it's exhausting for me to do, so if I have a week at work where I'm in a lot of meetings or have a lot of interactions like that, my brain is so well and fried by the weekend that all I want to do is sit there and stare at a wall for 48h. WFH during Covid has helped considerably with that aspect, as it's moved most of my conversations into chat or email, but that also means I have to work a bit harder at forcing myself into situations where I have to communicate.

  • My cat absolutely loves popcorn. As soon as he hears the popping in the microwave, he'll come running and start yelling to get some. Then if you're sitting on the couch with the bowl/bag, he'll sit on the arm and try to steal pieces from you.

  • For me, brisket is more of an event than a meal. Usually I'll make it when we have friends staying with us for the weekend, and it's an excuse for us to have beers at 6am once the meat is in the smoker. We all take turns watching temps and fuel, and having the extra hands helps with wrapping and stuff.

Another option is smoked top sirloin roast aka picanha. It has a thick fat cap and lots of marbling into the meat. Traditionally, it's cut into steaks and grilled on a skewer, but i also like to smoke it whole and sear off the fat cap at the end. Prep is fairly simple, remove some of the fat cap (down to about 1/2") score the rest almost to the meat, season the whole thing with salt and pepper, then in the smoker at 250F. I will then take the fat trimmings and cut them down into small pieces and put them in the smoker to render into tallow. After about an hour or when the meat is 130F, I'll wrap in pink butcher paper using the tallow that I just rendered. From there, I just watch until it hits about 155F. At that point, you can let it rest and eat, but I like to throw it on a hot grill fat side down to get a good crispy sear on it. Slice it in thin strips like brisket, it melts in your mouth.

  • I live in a city that has 'good' transit by North American standards. It's 25km from my house to the office, and takes about half an hour to drive. If I were to take the supposedly 'good' transit, it would take 2 hours each way. That would mean that both my spouse and I would leave home before our kids even wake up, so they would have to manage getting themselves out of bed, fed, and off to school with no parent in the house, we would get home far too late to take them to any extracurricular activities, never mind making sure they eat healthy home cooked meals. I could move closer to the office, but then my COL would increase by 2-3X, meaning that all the good stuff I can afford for them now would become too expensive.

So sure, I have transit, but it's fucking useless.
