  • Landlords run at market rate and that keeps a lot of people out, so for them that’s no housing.

That's the worse than nothing option, because it also invites gentrification to the area, which drives up prices of everything else nearby. So now not only can people not afford a place to live, they also can't even afford some food to eat, and are forced to migrate somewhere else. This is how you end up with homeless encampments.

  • Yeah, we evolved that way because it's apparently slightly more advantageous to keep sperm just slightly colder than internal body temperature, even though it creates a higher risk of injury. An intelligent designer would have made sperm that can handle warmer temperatures.

  • It's even better than that... We do have proof of 'intelligent design', except the intelligence doing the designing was people. Virtually all of our food was cultivated over centuries to be the way it is today. We literally forced evolution to happen to make bananas, tomatoes, corn, wheat, livestock, etc.

  • Yeah, the 1975 incident was because the Tories allowed the government to shut down because they refused to pass a budget. The speaker kicked out the PM, appointed a temporary one, passed the budget, then dissolved parliament entirely. However, the mere threat can sometimes be enough.

  • I don't think he can dictate laws, but he can unilaterally dissolve parliament and force an election (same as other commonwealth countries, the queen did that to Australia back in 1975). So if it's a big enough issue, he technically could use that as a threat, though it would be a pretty nuclear option.

  • They can still trade in rubles with other countries that are willing to trade with them. It's not inconceivable that they can 'launder' a trade via, say India:

    1. Russia buys a few billion-ruble toothbrushes from India
    2. India invests the equivalent in USD with $DJT (minus a cut)
    3. India uses those rubles to trade at market value for goods with other countries that also trade in rubles

Replace India and Saudi Arabia with any 2 countries on this list: https://www.tbsnews.net/economy/bangladesh-among-over-30-countries-approved-trade-rouble-russian-embassy-705798

  • IIRC, it was Greg Norman's Shark Attack that had a thing where it would give you a small pixel art picture of the top-down view of a golf course, and you had to go through the game manual and enter in what page that golf course picture appeared on... so we just got a photocopy version of the manual

  • Possibly something to consider as well is that a) under virtually no circumstance would these people ever have to face trial, because rocket scientists are a valuable commodity, and b) the US/USSR were already nudging themselves into the Cold War before the Germans surrendered. If the USA didn't nab these scientists, the USSR certainly would have. I see it was mentioned in the reddit post you linked as well. Another thing to consider, is it would be much easier for the US to keep tabs on these people if they were brought to the US and employed in government jobs than if they went to the USSR, or Argentina like many other Nazi officials.

  • There needs to be exactly two groups involved in deciding to terminate a pregnancy: The pregnant person, and their medical team, with the pregnant person's choices taking precedence over everyone else's. If they want an abortion, they get one. If the doctors believe that the pregnancy is non-viable or carries an extreme risk to the parent, then the decision to terminate should be made only by the pregnant person.

It would be similar to the self-defense laws in many red states, they’re so loose that charges almost never stick if there’s any possibility that it was self defense.

And the doctors now risk getting arrested and having their mugshot published for everyone to see, having to go to court to fight it, possibly spending time in jail while waiting for trial. There's a saying "You may beat the rap, but you won't beat the ride".

  • Criminalizing drugs has only ever been harmful. The people using these drugs aren't criminals, they're victims. They need treatment, not jail. What fucking monster thinks that someone who has fallen to an incredibly addictive substance needs incarceration, not treatment? You think someone who got caught with a needle in their arms deserves the same treatment as a murderer? People have lifetime sentences for possession of heroin and rapists get a couple years.

  • That's a shit dojo 100%. Everywhere I've trained if someone pulled that shit, they'd at the very least get sat the fuck down for a good long chat with the sensei, if not kicked out entirely... not to mention pushups, so, so, so many pushups.

  • What I would really like is having a combination between 'all' and 'subscribed' where it shows 'all' posts, but then my subscribed communities get a sort of amplification so they are more likely to appear in my feed, even if posts in my subscribed communities may not get much engagement.
