  • No. The resolution of this specific circumstance in this specific location is not what I mean by this shit.

By this shit I mean the general danger of being the wrong color in nature.

In Europe, there's nearly zero chance of running into serious, life-threatening, interpersonal trouble on a hike, no matter your color. That is less certain in parts of the United States.

  • 20-some years ago I lived in a precarious situation in the back of an old Black Panther karate dojo (I know). Newly-minted urban white boy that I was, it was, culturally, quite a learning experience.

I remember one of the guys (an outdoorsman from Louisiana) told me that he was always armed when he went hiking or camping. I didn't get it at the time, but now I do. It wasn't bears or mountain lions he was afraid of. It was this shit.

  • If you're looking for advice for a less-addictive video service, and you want to support creators, Nebula.

New Pipe is also a great little YT client, less addictive in that there's no suggestion algorithm, so you need to know what you want to watch.

  • The first movie I ever saw was Popeye, in 1980, with Robin Williams. I cried my little eyes out. It's not a scary movie, but I was expecting a cartoon, and seeing it with live actors freaked me right the fuck out.

I'm sure it wouldn't scare me now, but I haven't watched it since.

Sort of a similar thing with The 'Burbs with Tom Hanks 9 years later. Probably wouldn't scare me, but nah.

  • After working in 24-7 transportation for over a decade, it's honestly confusing when normal people schedule things for the afternoon. I always have to take a step back and ask myself if they really want to meet up at 0400. It's just so much better to schedule using a 24-hour clock.

  • These days, Almost exclusively.

I went through a phase of buying an enormous number of used paperbacks, before I had my first Kindle or iPad. At one point I had almost the whole Wheel of Time stack, along with stacks of other titles. It just wasn't sustainable. I don't have the space for all those books, nor the time to dust them, nor the money to buy books that I may only read once.

These days, I'll only buy a book if I want to study it, or to keep it as an object, because I'll still probably end up reading it digitally, or listen to the audiobook.

  • Guy here,

My woman and I agree that Uniqlo is outstanding for staples, Suprima Cotton T-shirts, etc, but not for showpieces. I'd be happy to have all my layers be Uniqlo, but I'd never buy a dress shirt or sports coat from them, the materials don't line up in those items, lots of polyester, etc. They do offer free (or inexpensive?) hemming on their pants, which is fantastic.

  • I'm a decade older, but I feel like a lot of people who left for Lemmy were active on Reddit 10-12 years ago, and have preference for the flavor of discourse of that time. As it grew, reddit became far too sarcastically meta in a lot of ways. What was once a spicy "in joke" became boilerplate. I'm not surprised at the exhumation of the old memes. It may just be a phase of some sort, a necessary reset, who knows?

  • Yeah, I was way down in a hole at 30. Things are unrecognizably better 15 years later. I didn't miss out on any dreams, because I didn't have any. I probably would've been worse off if I'd had a more successful first (hopefully) quarter.

  • Keep in mind that your interior walls aren't insulated, so you'll lose some of your heat to other rooms, probably causing higher-than-expected usage. Along with the bursted pipes, which have already been mentioned, I'd be also concerned about interior temperature gradients and condensation, and resultant mold and mildew issues.
