  • I got an old atx case off craigslist with 9 5.25” hotswap bays and put in 3x 5bay hotswap cages in the front. plenty of room for the smaller SSDs inside

Came with a free i5 system and a 1050ti I use for transcoding.

  • That really depends, are you looking for an actual filesystem or (for real) object level storage? Does the frontend have compatibility with s3-type endpoints?

I would recommend a vpn like tailscale to encrypt traffic and not expose your local env to the internet

Here are some self-hosted s3 compatible options: https://geekflare.com/self-hosted-s3/

Although I think you might want to reconsider your architecture here. If you're planning on self-hosting the storage for a frontend hosted on a VPS somewhere latency is probably going to make for a pretty bad experience.

  • This would be more informative if it was graphed as a percentage of population as arizona’s pop has increased quite a bit in recent years. Lots of thise out of state folks are probably under-prepared for the heat.

  • even package managers will still put stuff in random places like binaries outside my $PATH.. or not even clearly telling me what the binary is named or how to execute what I just installed.
