  • Personally, I can only think of one which was my great uncle who works for NASA. He was an atheist for all of my life (30+ years) until a few years ago when he came to visit us and began coming to church and explained that he’s now a Christian.

I haven’t asked his reasons why but I am curious what led to his conversion. Most of my family is Christian, but no one, as far as I know, pressured him to change or mocked him for his (lack of) belief. The topic of religion never came up in family gatherings besides having a circle of hands and prayer before dinner.

  • It’s not necessarily Gmail, I have a variety of these free email accounts and my Gmail rarely ever gets spam. But my Yahoo has been getting hit HARD lately.

This is not unusual for this time of year. At the beginning of each year, this happens.

My theory is that it’s because in the US, this is when citizens begin working on their taxes and are able to get tax refunds as early as January. This means that malicious actors have a wide variety of money potentially available from these people having money from tax refunds and they have a higher chance of getting more money at this time.

That’s my theory, anyway. It starts to die down after April, which is the deadline for US citizens to file taxes for the year.

  • They’re expecting the 50 series to have some scarcity issues, so be aware of that. In addition to that, it’s possible that people may scalp up 40 series because of an expected shortage, so be aware of that as well.

That’s what I experienced when trying to upgrade from the 10 to the 20 even when the 30 came out. People were still hoarding 20 series and I wasn’t able to comfortably upgrade until the 40 series came out.

  • Those are really great specs and yeah you should be able to run just about anything released so far at the maximum settings with those specs.

That’s quite the build, a dream for most of us. Lucky boyfriend you got lol

On the PSU, are you sure this can handle all this at 1000W? Just want to make sure of that part.

  • I am the same and I’ve never smoked a cigarette. I like the initial smell that comes off after it’s been freshly lit. But once it hits the middle, that shit starts to stink lol.

I grew up in a time when adults smoked around kids so I guess it’s the familiarity with my childhood too.

  • Fucking this so much.

There’s an outage but it’s not my week. How about I only get notified if someone tags me instead of getting 50 notifications in the middle of the night that have nothing to do with me??

Recently, it seems that whenever I go on lunch, that is when people decide to start spamming the group chats. Really fun trying to watch a video or listen to music on my phone and have to be spammed with those notifications.

And the best I can do, as far as I know on my iPhone, is to swipe the notification and block for an hour or block for the day. But there lies the problem…if someone needs to ping me, then I miss out on that notification..

  • You reminded me how Teams defaults to emoji when typing too.

I’ve had times where I’m making a point like “ Here is a point (here is context): “ and Teams will turn that last ): to a sad face emoji….

It’s been a while since I’ve encountered that, but I had no idea how to undo it and it irritates me that they default to emojis over grammar for a work-first application.

  • I just block a lot of communities like that. It’s easy in the Voyager app to do this on Lemmy. I also have some filters set up for some of the common words that are used in the doom and gloom posts like what you’re talking about.

It helps out a lot to decrease a lot of the overly negative stuff.

If you find yourself wanting some of it back, maybe you could create a second account that you could log into as you feel it is needed? Voyager allows me to switch between accounts very easily. Or it did, I haven’t had a secondary account in some time, but I did have that function last time I needed it.

  • LibreOffice (and Open Office). When Microsoft Office is $200 or a monthly subscription.

I just used LibreOffice Writer to update my resume a few minutes ago and it’s a bit to switch to but it makes sense and I loveeeee the UI that caters to both people who prefer classic Office (‘97-2003) or those who prefer the more modern UI (‘07 and newer).

It does get a bit annoying because it is so powerful that it has a mind of its own and tries to do things for you, like formatting, but if you’re patient (like I was just now), it’ll work out for you and be really great.

  • I’ve seen that as well. Good way to smash someone’s car/house window one day.

You reminded me of this guy who used to put a 3x5 note card with his handwriting on it and would put it on select cars in the neighborhood saying “I buy junk cars”. Basically only on cars that didn’t look to be in the best shape.

Way to go disrespecting people you want to do business with!

  • I often wonder who is buying these?? I can somewhat understand NordVPN, but Raycons?? They’re almost as expensive as name brand earbuds but come off as a cheap dollar store brand. But I guess people really like their fav YouTube channels to actually buy these?

  • You make a good point I didn’t think about! All that money into advertising that could have gone into the product or better avenues like paying your workers a better wage. And that feeds back into the last part of your comment, that if workers were paid and treated better, I think a lot more workers would take more pride in their work and encourage more customers through word of mouth.

I remember my ex and one other person recently telling me about going to Walmart and having employees explicitly tell customers they would never shop at the store they work for.

That’s crazy! All that money they waste on ads could’ve gone to the employees who would be less likely to trash the company and make them look horrible to shop at.

Versus a place like Costco where I can’t remember ever seeing an ad but treats their employees well enough that employees do encourage people to shop at their stores.

  • I’d say depends on where you are and what you plan to use it for.

In my state, at least, I considered it, but I wouldn’t be able to use it to the fullest because you can’t legally ride them on some highways because it can’t keep up with the speed and I often needed to use those highways. Without using those, I would either get stuck somewhere, need to take a longer route, or illegally use the highway which could be dangerous.

So I opted to just get a motorcycle instead of a scooter for my situation.

But if it’s just around a city or town, a scooter would do the job just fine.
