  • There are others like it and some better for those who are both non-technical and non-gamers. What you’re looking for is “immutable distro” https://itsfoss.com/immutable-linux-distros/ which is a distro of Linux that is very user friendly, much like Windows, in not allowing major changes to the OS. SteamOS is this as well.

It makes setup and updates much easier to manage and easier for users to use because it just works most of the time.

  • I was just about to post this.

Along with this, there are double postings because people are crossposting a second after posting and it is clunking up my feed with duplicates.

Yeah, they have different comment threads, but I don’t care. I don’t want to see all these duplicates everywhere.

And then there’s like you say, where I’ve blocked the community and it shows up on my feed anyway because someone is crossposting to a community I haven’t blocked. But if it comes from that community, I don’t want to see it at all.

I’d like a feature to just block all crossposts. I don’t want to see any of them.

  • I place little value on someone’s educational experience anymore since a lot of this can and is usually learned from nearly any place on the web or dark web.

It seems that for an evil maid attack to occur, someone would need to leave the device unattended, specifically with their admin/sudo account logged in so they can create the access they want later. That is, unless they discovered an exploit in the system that enabled them to gain that access by some other means.

The three best ways someone would be proactive against this attack are:

    • never leave your device logged in and unattended without some sort of passcode system being necessary to get in and execute commands/programs.
    • never leave “guest” accounts active on your device, even if they don’t have admin permissions. This can make it easier for someone to find other exploits to gain admin access.
    • always separate your accounts. Have a dedicated account for admin level escalations and use it only for that purpose and nothing else. If an attacker is to somehow get your attention away and leave your device unattended, at least this leaves them with no admin access on your main account

If you suspect your device has been compromised, the best thing to do is to shut down and disconnect from the network (unplug Ethernet cable and consider removing the WiFi card; even with the device powered off) and have a professional inspect it. I say that because even if you reinstall the OS or even get another OS, there’s no way to tell if something hardware was added to allow intrusion if we’re worried about physical access being compromised to the device.

  • No TVs either? Most laptops and desktops over the last 15+ years have either HDMI/VGA which are generally available on TVs made in the last 15+ years too.

Additionally, if you get Windows 10/11 Pro (can be gotten for free nowadays with some searching) or Linux, you can either SSH or RDP into those boxes so you’d only need the monitor/TV on first time setup. After that, you’d just have the box sitting in a corner and you’d remote into that from another device. I have a Windows 11 Pro and Raspberry Pi at my home that I remote into and they never get connected to a monitor or TV unless something really bad happened like the OS borked or something. I even use my iPhone to RDP/SSH, so you don’t even need a computer for remoting either. The options to SSH/RDP are even better if you’re on Android, in my opinion.

If you have a family TV in the living room, that may be the best place to put it, though you’ll ideally also want somewhere with access to an Ethernet cable than relying on WiFi for the best performance. But I say next to the living room TV because then you can easily hook it up to the TV if you need to and not have to power down and physically move it.

You can set up RDP on most Linux distros. There are a lot of guides online to help with that so you can get a full view of the computer as if you were seated in front of a monitor. Otherwise you can just rely on SSH and run your commands off there. I use RDP for my W11 server and SSH for my PiHole server. The Windows App on iPhone (and iPad) works well for me, plus using a keyboard and mouse if I feel I need it. And then I have an SSH app on my phone I can use to connect and send commands remotely.

  • I wouldn’t trust any third party claims for something as sensitive as this. You’re giving them a lot of access and trust and that’s not great for something that will directly talk with the iCloud where your passwords are stored.

Your best bet is to export those passwords to another password wallet that you trust that works in Linux.

You can access the iCloud through iCloud.com and I believe you can access passwords there, but of course it doesn’t offer the same convenience that it does on Apple devices.

  • That is definitely one of my favorite phones I’ve ever owned. I loaded so many custom ROMs on it and loved the built in kickstand.

Back when HTC was at their peak.

I wanted that 3D successor so bad. My cousin broke her Evo 4G and they gave her the 3D as a replacement so I tried the same but ended up getting another Evo 4G lol

  • Longer than that. I used to root phones and this was a major feature people wanted once rooted. It was a free option with no limits when rooted but carriers wanted to charge extra and set data limits.

I was doing this around 2010 on the HTC Evo 4G (WiMax).

  • Game prices? I understand the Nintendo cult is always stiff. But for the last 10 years these people bitched about $70 games. And now they are just throwing excuse after excuse defending $80 games now. But the lie I've been hearing is "Sony has been selling $80 games since the PS5 came out" No... No it hasn't. There is not one base PS5 game for $80 ever made.

I’m very much against this and always have been, but I think not everyone has been. Some people will buy these games at any cost, especially when it comes to Nintendo and children. Children don’t understand the true costs and parents just want a happy kid and think it’s not that bad of a price for their kid to be happy. Most probably don’t pay attention to the price to see that it once was $50 and now is $80 for the new games.

It’s infuriating for me because my boycott effectively means nothing when these people exist. But no matter, I’m happy with my PC and waiting on emulation when it comes to play these games.

  • You forget that the companies making those cheap cars are often the same companies of the fancier cars. Thinking Hyundai and their Genesis line.

Hyundai will never make a Sonata look like a fancy super car because then they won’t have any reason for someone to want to pay more for the fancier models that their Genesis line has for 3x the cost.

The people buying the fancier cars want something exotic that no one else is driving on the roads. They will willingly pay the premium for that luxury to not look like the rest of the cars on the road. Many also don’t care what’s under the hood, i.e. doesn’t matter if a cheaper Chevy can beat their Maserati, they’re buying the car for the exotic looks.

And then you also have some people who don’t want something flashy even if it is cheap. When I lived in a not so great area, I specifically did not want anything that drew attention to me. For example, I didn’t even want to wear knock offs of high end clothing like a knock off of Gucci clothing because it makes people think I have money and am a target for being robbed. So yes, I want the generic 4 door sedan the broke college kids are driving. Maybe the local thief won’t be so likely to smash my windows or try to carjack me.

  • Was just thinking about this the other day too. I have started to use the Brave browser on my iPhone to watch YouTube videos since it blocks ads natively, but I can’t get the Brave browser on my Apple TV for the same reason. I would love to.

I am sick to death of these obnoxious, irrelevant ads. And no, paying YouTube for Premium is not a solution.

  • I use my turn signal all the time so I’m not one of these people, but here’s what I’ve heard from others over the years:

    • there’s a video of one woman being asked on a college campus and she said it’s not “manly” for men to use their turn signals
    • one cop on Reddit said he doesn’t use it when he “knows” no one is around
    • my dad would get on my mom about it and she said it was a bad habit of not putting it on (whereas my dad stressed us to use ours when teaching us how to drive)
    • I had a friend who brushed it off because “it’s just me being a girly girl” while making a stupid cute face gesture
  • Might be someone wanting to share the WiFi on something like a tablet. Or someone using an Android phone as an “iPod Touch”, basically everything the phone has minus cellular capabilities but still wanting to share the WiFi with other devices.

I could see this being very popular on flights and cruises where they charge you per device to pay for this one device and then share with other devices.
