  • It already does exclude tesla. The first tax credit from the Obama years went away after a company was producing a certain volume of cars, it was meant to spur new companies, not bolster established ones. Tesla got it for a while but by now they make too many cars to count.

Not sure if it was actually kept in but the tax credits in the IRA were also dependent on cars being union made, and Elon hates unions so tesla was excluded. This is probably part of the reason Elon hates Biden and why he turned to trump.

So you don't have to really target tesla, you can just target large established manufacturers or non union ones.

  • While this is regressive and fucked, it looks like lower income people still won't have to pay income tax:

As part of the legislative package, lawmakers doubled the standard deduction for seniors and nearly tripled the standard deduction for individuals, effectively eliminating income tax on the lowest income households.

  • No war in western europe*

And that is mostly due to mutually assured destruction and decolonization and the destruction of European imperial ambitions. If these grand entangling alliances prevented war then WWI wouldn't have happened. If nukes weren't a thing then nato would probably be a factor contributing towards another world war rather then preventing it.

  • Kind of burying the lead on that quote:

The investigation did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities

So trump didn't try and punish a foreign power that helped him get in, and instead talked to them after the fact. I guarantee he's talking to netanyahu right now, but no one cares about that. There's nothing in that quote proving he was coordinating during the election.

2016 was lost because the democrats are losing the working class because they didnt offer them anything and were just pointing to the horror of trump and hoping it would scare voters to there side. In 2020 Biden was pushing a fairly progressive program with build back better plus people wanted an adult at the wheel to handle covid. Then kamala ran the same campaign as Clinton running on minor iterative improvements that most people won't see while pointing to the boogie man of trump and hoping that will scare people, and it failed again, even worse this time.

Democrats need to listen there base and try and win the working class back. Biden did, he opened his doors to Bernie and Warren and gave them a place in the party. He was rewarded for that with record voter turnout. This time we didn't have a primary and dissent was stifled due to the threat of trump.

At least that's my view of it, why do you think we lost?, we can at least say this time it's not Russian interference.

    1. Yeah they at least tried to
    2. Probably but those ties seem very loose. From what I can tell there wasn't much organization at all in the trump campaign , much less effective coordination with Russia. It wasn't Kissinger coordinating with south Vietnam to keep the war going or Reagan talking to Iran to not free the hostages.
    3. Maybe but that's only because the scales were so even. It may be a reason she lost, we can't know because we don't know how many people it actually flipped but my guess is very small compared to the other reasons clinton lost. I don't think it invalidates the election though as fundamentally it was still Americans freely choosing Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton through the broken electoral college. This happens quite often, like the examples above, even in this election it looks like netanyahu was holding off on a ceasefire in Lebanon to keep Biden from getting a win, that doesn't invalidates the election though.

Also I think democrats used it as a cope and scape goat for there electoral problems instead of addressing the actual major reasons people voted for trump. They failed to learn there lesson in 2016 and now here we are.

  • It may not be for everyone. Lemmys growth has stalled out and barring musk buying reddit and turning it to shit i don't see another influx coming. So we're kinda stuck with the community that exists now. Its a pretty good and sustainable community which can provide a lot of general interest posts like news, memes and cats lately. But for other more specific topics if if it's not already a large community here it probably won't be. It's not even just niche interests, professional sports for example has very little presence on here as a whole much less individual sports or teams, and I don't see, for example, a baseball community taking off here no matter how much effort you put in since the current lemmy community isn't much interested in it and your average baseball fan probably won't be coming to lemmy to discuss things.

My recommendation would be to use lemmy for some of those general interest topics, and maybe some of the more popular niche communities if your into them, And go to other places, preferably independent forums or rss feeds, for other things. We don't need one unified scrolling app, it may be a bit more convenient, but the internet is better off if you spread your traffic around.

  • It seems people just aren't going to accept elections any more. Yeah trump was the most blatant and harmful but the democrats were pushing russiagate until it hit its dead end and now this.

Starting to think democracy may not be able to survive the internet

  • It's just talking about the first month / year. Assuming that only inflation is effecting prices to keep things simple the price of renting goes up over time with inflation, while a mortgage stays constant dollar wise, and since a dollar is worth less over time the payment is less.

Combine this with building equity the net cost of owning a home goes down over time while renting goes up. The question is when do those two lines meet, eg. If you bought a home now how long would it take to be paying the same as renting. Maybe it's 5 years, maybe 10 or 15 depends on the market, judging by the article it seems that period is getting longer as the starting point for a mortgage is really high and will take a while to recover.

  • Most landlords bought the place earlier when home prices and mortgage rates were lower, or they just own the place outright and don't make any mortgage payments.

This article is about choosing whether to buy at current rates or rent at current rates. If you bought a place 10 years ago for half the price it's worth now and a 2% interest rate then you're probably going to be paying less then renting

  • Yeah, not saying you should listen to him. But a lot of people do and telling that audience he's an idiot and shouldn't be listened to wont work as well as playing along and trying to use his platform to promote something besides conspiracies and light fascism.

  • Unlike fox News though Rogan isn't outright hostile to liberals. If you go on fox News as a liberal you'll maybe be able to get half your point across before the host calls you an un-american communist. On rogan you could probably get through a 10 minute Marxist diatribe, as long as you dont use any scary or long words like proletariat, and he'd probably be to dumb to see what your doing and nod and agreee.

For better or worse the democrats seem to have abandoned the identity politics that angered this group so much so it wouldn't be too hard to bring this crowd over if the messaging is right.

  • If we had ranked choice and got rid of the electoral college*

A lot of those third party votes are in solid red or blue states where it wouldn't matter. Also a lot of the third party votes this time was for rfk and the libertarian Oliver, who wouldve probably went to trump so the outcome would probably be the same.

  • What restrictions?, the article doesnt mention any, Bidens ultimatum came and went with no action.

Both sides were for unconditional aid to Israel, kamala may have added some laments about loss of life but she repeatedly said restrictions on military were off the table. Until someone can point to me a concrete policy that kamala had in her platform that was different from trump then yeah both sides are equally bad on this issue. Trump is worse on a lot of others but to a Palestinian they are both bad.

  • It could just be for reducing churn and keeping the status quo. It's a prisoners dilemma, if geico spends a million on advertising then they might gain some customers from say progressive. Progressive would then also also have to advertise to attract customers back so they will spend a million on advertising too, now both are spending a million to keep the status quo. If you take a step back and look at the big picture it's basically everyday people paying higher premiums that go to the advertising company, celebrity etc.

The car insurance market is pretty static, there's no opportunity to expand the market outside general population growth since everyone already has a car and has car insurance, so expansion is difficult especially since there arent many differentiating factors, so companies tend to advertise to just keep there current market share. Charity on the other hand has plenty of room for expansion, it can be as much as the disposable income of the country, if you watch an aspca ad and donate your likely to keep donating to the other causes you support, assuming you have the disposable income.

  • zippo lighters

I've never had any luck with zippos, whenever I tried to use it it wouldn't work and I had to refill it. I hear you have to use them often but I'm not a smoker or arsonist so will only use a lighter maybe once a month. Any tips or recommendations for lighters that you don't have to use often but will last longer than a cheap disposable one?
