  • While I do think Labor's housing future fund is a dogshit policy that will subsidise property developers, both Phillip Lowe and the previous government really do have a lot to answer for in this situation. Lowe told everyone that interest rates wouldn't rise - which, yes they were obviously going to rise eventually and a lot of people have certainly overleveraged themselves. But Lowe really shouldn't have added to this by assuring people that they wouldn't rise. On top of this the lnp loosened lending laws and allowed people to withdraw from their super. Sure there's a certain degree in which people should be responsible for the decisions they make. But expecting everyone to be a rational decision maker at all times is not a great basis for financial policy. Throw in the fomo rhetoric being pushed by the media and you get quite a shitty situation all round.

I do wish the government would at least tax some of the profits that the banks are making off this.

  • I lived through 2 weeks without power once after a storm. Made me realise how valuable physical information/ entertainment is.

  • Kinda glad that I kept most of my university textbooks and have a bunch of encyclopaedias and shit lying around.

  • Fucking hell the right are really doing a speed run in fascism.

  • I thought it was more a case of nobody (except those who don't own a house) wanting prices to fall because so many people have their wealth invested in property. Even if it is a money laundering issue, no government will do anything that results in prices falling.

  • I haven't developed one yet after 3 years on ritalin. Still 20 mg under my daily mg per kg limit so I have room to go up if I need. I take it every day as well with no breaks. My psychiatrist said that he likes to start people on ritalin because it's less strong so if people develop a tolerance they can go up to dexamphetamine.

  • Those guys sound like assholes and many would consider their behaviour to be sexual harassment/ assault.

  • This happened in my country and would be absolutely considered sexual assault by state laws. So whatever your feelings are on the matter, the fact of reality is that it's sexual assault.

  • I was thinking about this as well. It technically happened in a workplace so I'm also wondering if Australian workplace laws apply here.

  • Pretty sure some of the national men's team have joined them as well.

  • What's your education situation over there? Have you got free uni like the Germans?

  • Honestly some kind of waste management or water treatment business. Stable, reliable industry that provides an important service and keeps society running.

  • I think giving into either of them too much has drawbacks. The criticisms I have of optimism are just as relevant to pessimism. Plus our perception of things can be influenced by pre-existing cognitive biases.

  • This photo has become its own Rorschach test

  • I don't know about you guys but all the major political parties in my country take donations from the fossil fuel industry.

  • Wish I started this shit earlier. It's sad to think about all the wasted potential and chronic under achievement.

  • In Australia we recently had a considerable shift towards progressive politics after a long ass run of conservative government. The centre right (moderate conservatives) were absolutely demolished in our last election in favour of progressive minor party candidates. Our centre 'left' party has certainly moved further to the right (this has been happening for a while now though) but they are having their asses handed to them by our progressive left party who is growing in popularity, especially with younger voters.

We are historically a very conservative country and I have no doubt we'll eventually trend back towards this tradition. But for now I'm enjoying being the exception to the rest of the world.

  • Unfortunately we often don't have a choice because there's pressure to publish in high impact journals which are usually not open access. I would love to be able to publish all of my papers in open access journals!

However, you can often email researchers asking for a copy of their papers and usually they'll be happy to share it.

  • My personal theory is that neurodivergents unconsciously group / couple with each other. Happened with me and my partner. Genes that couple are more likely to co-exist. Either that or there's some shared evolutionary origin of the genes that make up both conditions.

  • Holy shit what the actual fuck is your health care system America. This thread is nightmare fuel.
