  • I think xda is magical that it is still around and a resource to find out stuff about a specific phone. Then other forums like avsforum that's kept popping up to help me when I had TV model specific questions throughout the years. Overclockers.net for specific motherboard discussions that have continued to be a resource over the years.

Deal sites like isthereanydeal, camelcamelcamel, and pcpartpicker continues be so useful as it has been in the past. Then there's pcgamingwiki I use all the time. Oh Wikipedia of course. Even steam forums has been useful with guides there for games, and even sometimes people asking about troubleshooting for console versions because the devs are there.

I think there's a lot of wonderful places. If you look at the most popular billion dollar run social media services with massive amount of users then yeah it start to seem bleak. But, there's still places that were cool and are still cool because they exist with a more sustainable model as opposed to infinite growth.

Also forgot to add that something like archive sites exists is incredible too, so sites that will be lost will have more of a chance to not have content lost forever and be a glimpse into the past.

  • I don't remember that time for regular websites, but do remember it for YouTube before it became a place that started aggressively shifting towards promoting creators who were sharing for the purposes of monetizing. Hard to find videos that fill the old vibe unless you use something like block tube next so the popular channels aren't pushing down the visibility of those type of uploads.

I guess Twitter is that way too where it started shifting into a corporate and influencer platform to advertise stuff to people as the user base exploded.

Fediverse fills the old vibe though of people just sharing because they feel like it as opposed to an expectation of like, subscribe, ring the notification bell, visit my merch store in my profile, and check out my patreon. And I see you read my comment but haven't subscribed. So please do as you drink and enjoy the refreshing taste of power aid as it cools you off on a hot summer day.

  • Yep, people were able to upgrade their old macbooks 2011 with 16 gigs of ram and pop in a SSD which led delaying it ending up in a landfill sooner. Imagine if those old Macbooks had gone with the philosophy of non upgradeable storage and ram like the current shift of modern day tech.

  • I've like newpipe because it's just a clean experience of only my subscription feed. I've hated any page other than subscription on YouTube, since I can't even stand most of the thumbnails and I don't endlessly use YouTube. Don't even check out most of the videos in my own feed, so don't need all the additional clutter YouTube shows now days.

  • I don't understand how it is a protest when if you look up some of the usernames in that pic they make a stand in /r/place then go about commenting and participating in their favorite subreddits like they have always done. So what is the difference when usage remains the same as its been in years pass except they've been given a new subreddit to complain in, which is really just another new subreddit to add to their regular rotation of subreddits they had used and continue to use. I wouldn't be surprised if they use reddit more now.

  • Why are they still there if they are so angry? What I noticed is that people would be ranting on reddit in places like ModCoord or whatever but then be contributing with on topic content in other subreddits like normal. So why are they so mad when they are fine with using reddit normally and are still able to? Seems like so many contradictions of calling for boycotts but then not doing any boycotting when it comes to their favorite subreddits.

That's why Spez won. He's smart enough to use their rage to increase their engagement on Reddit by having them obsess over one place, since their actual daily activity on other subreddits is normal.

  • They know how to create situations to extract money. It's why I like Apple stock. They are good are creating base tiers that are great, but just with enough limitations to nudge people to upgrade to a higher one or buy two.

  • For socializing discord can match it, but it's really more the database of information that is searchable and viewable by anyone who doesn't even use reddit and it not being gatewalled that makes Discord not even come close. It's too much of a closed ecosystem even among discord account users with having to be in a particular server to benefit, and servers have been shut down and information all lost for members too.

Socializing to me is secondary. Like when it comes to stackoverflow, xda, or whatever random forums pop up in searches it's really the solution that's at the forefront of importance than whether these users are friends or whatever for anyone trying to find a relevant answer to their problem.

  • Seriously. For pirates once a game is cracked there is zero worries of what will happen to my copy? Somewhere they will be able to retrieve the game even if they don't bother backing it up.

But, paying customers opt not to do that to rely on official channels for downloads and installs. To punish them and reminding them how inferior their copy of the game is in the long term to the cracked copy is a bad move. It'll only take losing their game once to lose faith in the platform and not bother buying again.

  • I've like GOG since whether they disappear they provide installers for users, so it's the best of both worlds of easy launcher management and installer for those that want to archive and self host everything they buy.
