  • I don't see ad because I have it blocked system wide on the phone, but I've moved towards not keeping apps that show ads installed anymore. Have moved onto either foss or paid versions.

And subscription only model to remove ads is definitely not something I want to support, and the first of its kind I've encountered on Android outside of Apple.

  • Yeah, if subscription is the only way to remove ads then I'm fine with the Foss options like liftoff. And I'm blocking ads system wide on my phone, so it's not like I see any ads on Sync. But, I would still prefer to be able to pay to remove it, since I have moved away from using apps that have ads in favor of Foss or paying to for the ad free version over the years.

  • When I think about it I think it's mainly been web hosting type services where data is being streamed or stored on the cloud that I've been fine with subscriptions for. And then not so much for pure software preferring more pay once and then pay for a new version update down the line type of approach like Office 2021 for example over Office 365. Although, I've moved mostly to libreoffice.

Same for games. I'd rather pay Diablo 4 $70 over paying for PS+ or game pass. Chose to forgo online multiplayer than pay for PS+ on my PS4 last Gen. Generally preferred a large one time lump sum than small monthly payments for things, since I suppose I just a distaste for adding more monthly expenses to the already growing list of monthly expenses.

  • I just don't do subscriptions. One of the aspects I hated about my foray into the Apple app store where everything seemed to be subscription or ads. Quickly missed Android and places like f-droid where I knew I could find ad free and subscription free open source alternatives.

I was happy to pay for apps like Procreate and Lumafusion though, so it's not that I'm against paying for ads. I just don't do subscriptions.

  • If you try to play offline it's also been the one that has been the most problematic for me over other DRMs. And if playing on Linux like the Steam Deck and trying out different proton versions to see what runs best you can into the daily device activation limi and lock you out.

It's a DRM that gets in your way and reminds you that the pirate version is superior.

  • Been a while since I used Nova myself, but when I last checked the branch integration was only present on the beta version of the app.

The normal version hadn't been updated since December 2021, so I think that version is fine with it being from before the branch acquistion.

  • Whether it's reddit or lemmy I've always blocked all politics and world/local news related communities, since they rarely seem to really be a place that's been cordial in the comments. And I've moved onto RSS feeds anyways over user submission driven news feeds.

Seems to be what has kept me the most sane and happy using social media.

  • With each day with no news I started considering making another lemmy account in case this one didn't come back. I didn't know which one to make my new home though, since I liked privacyguides run one the best.

  • That seems ideal for migrating account settings from instances that have not shut down. But, not so useful if the instance disappears, and seems to requires users to have to actively have multiple accounts in existence as fail safes. But, would also be a good feature to have.

  • One thing I don't get though for those who are not happy with reddit but continue to use it is why they continue to keep actively participating.

Reddit and Twitter make it easy for people to not need accounts and provide either direct or indirect rss support, and reddit especially makes it easy to lurk on communities without an account through multisubreddit links for a customized feed without needing instances like nitter.

So sense I get is those who keep actively participating and contributing to reddit instead of going accountless and making steps to reduce their footprint there are ones who never were going to leave. And really was just a case of virtue signaling during the height of the protests.

  • Love the Deck. I actually finish games with retro or pixel art aesthics with the deck compared to my PC or consoles. The pick up and go aspect and the smaller screen helps me keep coming back to it instead of abandoning it.

  • That's nice. Needing to know what version to stick with is additional information people will find handy if they choose to use Nova over a general "I use Nova" recommendation. And whether buying a premium license to stick with an older version is something they want to do for those who never bought Nova.
