  • Yeah I do miss the activity on my frontpage on reddit. I find myself browsing all most of the time here when I don't remember the last time I looked at /r/all on reddit. Sync and soon Boost coming out is going to be great in potentially bringing more people over.

  • Idk, LJ doesn't have a boss that takes a portion of the profits he generates. Extraction of surplus labor is the cornerstone of capitalism. But this isn't really the place to get into a deep discussion about regardless. I don't think it's profiteering either to charge an amount that provides you with a living wage. Sync for reddit had orders of magnitude more users than the Lemmy version so of course he'll need to charge more on Lemmy to keep doing it full time.

  • LJ has a 10+ year reputation. Some people want to support him and pay $100 but no one has to. You keep shifting goalposts which is why you think I'm not meaningfully engaging lmao. Alright I'm actually out. I'm just repeating myself at this point.

  • Tantacrul is in charge of the UI/UX design now and his involvement is easily one of the best things to happen to musescore imo. It's actually super competitive to other scoring software now. Not that musescore was bad before, it was just super janky with some features. He said he's working on a redesign for audacity too which should be interesting.

  • Sync as far I can tell is the only thing so far to bring an openly capitalist approach to lemmy

Sync's pricing is inherently socialist. LJ owns his own labor and is able to decide what is done with it. If you don't want to pay then cool, there are plenty of other options.

  • this could’ve started with a regular ass subscription price to get rid of ads

There is... Do you even know what you're talking about? The price to remove ads perpetually is $20 with perpetual ultra being $100. Ultra can also be bought for $2/mo or $17(ish?)/year subscriptions.

Look, some people don't have an issue paying money to support the dev and the development of the app. You clearly don't which is totally fine! There are tons of different options available. You don't have to like sync or the pricing model but talking down on people who do is absurdly stupid.

This conversation is so unproductive I'm out.

  • Eh. Toxic work culture can drive people away regardless of the pay. Obviously some people suck it up but not everyone. Ultimately the goal is to treat employees well all around. Good pay, benefits, and work culture will keep people happy.

  • FL studio will always make the most of their money through the desktop version. FL can afford to make a little less money on their mobile app especially considering that it's likely a gateway for a lot of people to purchase the full version. Sync is a bit different in that regard. There's also much less of a market for lemmy readers.

  • The price increase is there because enough people can justify paying for it. I'm not sure why it's so confusing for you to understand that. Idk man... If you don't think it's worth it, don't buy it.

  • Most of the hype is from former users of the reddit version. I used sync for reddit for probably the past 7-8 years so it's super exciting to have that same user experience on lemmy. It's definitely a bit more refined and polished than other lemmy apps but it doesn't inherently provide any major features that other apps don't. I really enjoy it for lots of the small QOL features, personally.

  • Most people spend more money on things that they get less out of. Sure, $20 is a lot compared to many other smartphone apps but you could also easily blow the same amount, if not more, on lunch or something like that. If you like the app and intend on using it, spending $20 to support the dev really isn't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. I do understand that with exchange rates, the equivalent to 20 USD in many countries is prohibitively expensive but LJ said he's working on regional pricing.
