Flatpak doesn't run the latest stuff typically. Like I'm on Mesa 23.1.4 on Flatpak and 23.1.6 on Fedora. Probably newer than what Ubuntu has though.

What would it take for Linux to run all the hardware and software it needs? Companies need to make develop for Linux. In order for that to happen, Linux needs market share to make it profitable for them. But in order for Linux to gain market share, it needs to run all the hardware and software it needs. So in other words in order to get market share, Linux needs market share. How does it do that without being preinstalled on devices?

It all depends on your hardware. If you run standard hardware with an AMD card, all the drivers you need should (theoretically) be in the kernel and will magically just work. As soon as you start using running hardware with proprietary drivers then you have to put in a little effort. Might require you to install separate package(s) from a third-party repo or something, and that will require terminal. It's just three commands usually: add the repo - update your package manager - install the driver. Not hard but if you are used to the Windows way of doing things it can be intimidating.

Even still, some stuff just doesn't have Linux support at all or it's completely community-maintained. If every company just open sourced their drivers and did things the "Linux" way then there would be no issue but unfortunately Linux doesn't have the market share for those companies to care. So you get into the negative feedback loop of: Linux has low market share because of lack of support, and companies don't support Linux because of low market share.

Linus' brand of assholery extends to cussing out some of his colleagues via email when they did something stupid, sometimes. It's not even remotely comparable to Steve Jobs (horrible treatment of his daughter) and Bill Gates (EEE strategy, monopolistic practices).

Ask enterprise companies and hospitals how secure and reasonable Linux seems for their business models.

I got it the day it came out so it was the wild west. I think to get it to work on Arch I figured out you needed to compile the new llvm or something, and I just gave up at that point. Fedora Silverblue on the rawhide branch had everything for it, and as soon as 37 was caught up I just re-based on that branch and have been good ever since. Ubuntu did have some other issue I don't remember, not a new enough kernel maybe.

I love System 76 but I hate modified GNOME anything. That's why I always use Fedora. When Cosmic DE comes out I'll give it a shot.

The third party thing is outdated, you can enable it at install and have access to flathub and fusion repo. So installing Steam or Nvidia drivers is dead simple now. I would still say it's not great for new users because it's ultra minimal.

I realized Arch was overrated when I got a brand new 7900 XT and it didn't work on Arch at all because their LLVM was a version behind. It was up-to-date on Fedora and even Ubuntu, but not Arch. Then there was the whole broken grub thing. Bleeding edge and unstable I get, but you can't be unstable and also behind. You can run Arch in any distro with distrobox, I don't see why you wouldn't just do that.

Ubuntu has ads in the terminal when you update. Runs a highly modified GNOME that doesn't play well with some extensions. Snaps by default (although maybe not that bad now that they seem to launch a bit quicker). Unfortunately so many things only have Ubuntu support if they have Linux support at all, it's such a shame.

It's all just Epic talking points. "Lower cut means more money for developers! Lower cut means lower prices!" It's never been proven to be true. Shit in some cases I'd much rather my money go to Valve than the developers anyway. Much rather fund Linux/Vulkan/VR development than whatever bullshit Rockstar, EA or Activision are up to.

Yeah some windows are meant for floating and some are meant for tiling, nothing can really get around that. It would definitely be cool to take more steps in identifying which is which and having that be their default behavior.

Wake me up in two years when they add Female MC and The Answer please. I wouldn't mind as much if they were released as DLC but you just know it will be a separate "Persona 3 Reload Ultra Blue" release or whatever.

For me personally, Wii U was the worst console purchase I've ever made lol. If it wasn't for Smash, Mario Maker and Nintendoland with friends every once in a while I never would have turned it on. I honestly had way more fun with the Vita.

Aiming down sights was always a console thing. It's extremely hard to make small aiming adjustments on a joystick, so game devs added a button to move the camera in and reduce sensitivity. CoD popularized it, and every FPS shooter wanted to ride CoD's coattails so it's pretty ubiquitous now. For a game like CS it would homogenize the guns a bit, since there's a clear delineation between guns that can be scoped and those that cannot.

We're talking about Counter Strike here, it's been the same game for 20+ years at this point. Any two subsequent CS games are going to be very, very similar. Most of them didn't even feature an engine upgrade like we're getting now. Plus if you pay attention to the CS2 datamines, it looks like Valve have planning to add way more than just what they've announced so far. There most definitely will be new content.

I really don't think he was acting or anything. Like someone else said, if he knew how it worked he could have used it as a moment to teach others right? Instead he just completely fumbled everything, said it was set up incorrectly and blamed the website for it. Which given recent events is such a Linus thing to do...

I know Linus is more of a hardware guy but c'mon. You learn git freshman year into any Computer Science-related degree. Failing that, 5 seconds of Google or ChatGPT even will set you straight. Maybe it wasn't intuitive, but I like think the biggest tech youtuber would have knowledge of something so fundamental to his field...
