  • In my case it does nothing for my understanding of math. I am pretty bad at math so my synesthesia would only benefit me with numbers if I was good at calculating things in my head. Then I would probably see the color of the number before getting the facit.

With words it can be helpful with spellings. If I or someone else misspell a word I see it immediately because the color is wrong. This is also how I remember people's names. I tend to ask people how their names are spelled so I see their colors correctly. To me, that's part of knowing someone. If I haven't seen someone's name written in front of me, they won't have a color and I then tend to forget their names, which is super awkward sometimes.

With some words that can be spelled in different ways, I prefer some spellings over others because the color is prettier or more appropriate.

For example with gray and grey I prefer grey because the color of that word is light grey and a very light yellow. Gray is a dark, denatured brown and red. I don't like it as much.

But yeah, when it comes to math, it does almost nothing for me because I'm not mathematically gifted at all.

  • In that sense there is a logic to synesthesia. It's often sensory inputs experienced in childhood that gets mixed up and associated with one another so the fact that the thunderbirds have affected your number colors makes complete sense to me!

I'm pretty sure that A is red and B is blue to me because vocals are usually marked with red and consonants are marked with blue so the fact that the first two letters of the alphabet adheres to that rule makes sense to me. But I couldn't tell you why C is a pastel yellow, D is a blackish purple or why E is pale, almost white yellow etc.

  • Makes sense! I tend to prefer good films too. I can watch a bad horror flick now and again, but I do prefer movies that want something from me. I have a few people I used to refer to for movie recommendations on youtube. Not because I agreed with their tastes always, but because they were pretty good at finding movies I hadn't heard of and since I knew their tastes I would also know approximately what I would think about this or that film. Haven't really kept myself updated on the horror landscape in recent years because life is busy. That has bit me in the ass a few times.

Most recently, I goofed and drug my boyfriend to the cinema to watch The Monkey because I had heard that it was super scary and very creative. I must have been trolled because that film was probably the worst Stephen King movie I have seen since The Dark Tower. Holy shit. If it wasn't for the fact that we had bought tickets to see it, we would have left after the the babysitters funeral. Holy shit it was awful. It was the worst kind of horror comedy. I'm sure you know what I mean.

  • Aw man. I have always wanted music based synesthesia. I knew someone who saw colors when she listened to music too and she tried to paint a few different songs at one point. It was so interesting.

I'm a bit jelly of you xD it must be friggin awesome to see colors when listening to music.

  • What is a pretty looking name or word to you? Also, what are the colors of the numbers to you? Some synesthetes have really awesome colors while I feel like mine are pretty lame most of the time xD so many black and white and green and red letters. So few yellows and blues and pinks and purples. It's tragic lol.

  • That is actually a very interesting question and I think it entirely depends on what senses triggers the synesthesia. For me, it is the look of the letters that determines what color they get. I still have to know what sound they make and understand what they mean and such before the colors start to come. Otherwise it is just a nonsensical pattern and my mind ignores it.

If I learned Japanese, I'm sure their writing system would have different colors to me. I can answer you on the の because it is one of the only Japanese characters I understand and know and to me it is yellow, almost a light ochre with a bit of white in it while "no" is green and white.

It would be differnet for someone who sees words in colors if their synesthesia is based on sound. To them, maybe the の would have the same color as the "no" or maybe it would be different because the English "no" is pronounced differently than the Japanese "no". But I can't give a definitive answer on that one.

  • Yes. I mean, the letters have the same color no matter the language, but for example the word for apple in English has differnet colors than than it does in Danish.

Apple = red and a very small spot of light green.

Æble = golden brown, orange and pale yellow.

    Also =

    Dog = black, white, brown

Hund = brown, yellow and spring green

    And

Flower = black, white, pale yellow and black.

Blomst = white, forest green, red and little sprinkles of yellow.

So the color rules are the same, but the words are combined of different letters so they will have different colors in different languages.

Some words also have tastes and textures. The word "lady" has a rich, creamy, sticky texture and tastes sweet and nutty.

The word "aldrig" (meaning "never" in Danish) tastes like mackerel and has the texture and coolness of ice cubes.

The word "everybody" tastes like apples and the word "me" has the taste and texture of wheat flour. Sometimes it makes sense, other times it is very random. "Me" makes sense because the Danish word for flour is mel and I would get that association as a small child when I listened to songs where they sang the word "me" often enough for me to notice the word. As for lady, it is the combination of sounds when you speak the word that reminds me of the creamy, sticky sensation when you're eating Nutella or hazelnut nougat. Unlike the color based synesthesia, that is visual for me - it's is the way the letters look that determines their color and not how they sound - the taste and texture based synesthesia is determined by the sounds of letters and words.

Don't get me started on numbers and the visual manifestation of the alphabet, numbers, time, dates and the calendar.

  • I have a few different versions of synesthesia.

The most prominent one is that is see words and letters in color. If you tell me your name I can more or less paint your name like a weird color code. Whenever it is brought up it's almost like a fun little party trick where people ask me what color their names are and I tell them.

Spoiler alert, though: if your name has A or S in it, it will most likely have red in the mix. M and N are differnet variations of green. Some letters are dominant and others are submissive so depending on the word they either pain other letters a specific color or take color from dominant letters. E is a submissive letter. Tends to be a pale yellow, but will change color depending on the letters it is put together with. D is a weird dominant letter that changes color all the time. Either black or a deep purple. Completely depends on the word.

    Numbers have colors too.

    0 - white

    1 - black

    2 - pale yellow

    3 - sky blue

    4 - red

    5 - dark brown

    6 - black

    7 - yellow

    8 - dark purple

    9 - orange

    Random names and their colors:

Jack = black and red, white and black again.

Stephanie = red, yellow, green and yellowish white

    Peter = gold and black

Mary = forest green, red, black and orangy yellow

    Robert = black, white black

Lily = white, silver, yellow like sunshine

William = black, white, red, forest green

Karen = black, red, black, a sprinkle of yellow and spring green.

Russell = black, golden yellow, red, yellow

Evelyn = sunshine yellow, white and spring green.

    Etc etc

To me, pretty names are not just pretty if they sound good, they also have to have beautiful and unique color combinations. Most names tend to have red and green color combos for me so whenever yellow, blue, purple or pink appear in a name I really like it. In my country there's a man's name Åge which isn't the prettiest sounding name, but to me it is so friggin beautiful because it's one of the rarest color combinations I have in my head: dusty blue, morning pink, white, misty overlay and a bit of golden brown. The letter Å is the prettiest letter to me as it is this rare double color of blue and pink and it is a dominant letter so whenever it appears in a name or a word, it is like a breath of fresh air among all the greens and blacks and reds.

  • Yes. I have known a few people who made a bit of fun of me for having kept the same phone for seven years and told me that they had had three or four phones within that time span and that I was silly for keeping the same phone for so long. What about the newest updates and cameras and gadgets or whatever they call it? Why would I put up with outdated tech? The phone I have right now is from 22 and it still works fine. I hope it will last me until 2032, longer if possible.

  • Nice! Reminds me a bit of the later seasons of The White Vault. First two seasons: masterpieces. Everything after that starts to over explain a little too much. Still enjoyable, but it just explains too much and kinda cheapens the universe. Have you listened to the White Vault? It's a radioplay/podcast that takes a lot of inspiration from The Thing. It's really good! Well... the first two seasons are. XD

You sound a lot like one of my colleagues who has an endless love for shit tier horror movies. XD the worse they are the happier he is. If the movies are worse than Manos: The Hands of Fate, he is in heaven xD he used to make movie nights at work where people could join and watch horrible horror movies on a big screen. Man, I miss him xD

  • Oh for real. We sometimes buy a very cheap and shitty red wine and soak chicken thighs in it and cook them with spices and veggies. Also chopping up cauliflower and fry it with garlic and pepper and using the red wine sauce from the chicken to pour over it before serving. Fucking magic. It's almost enough to make you forget that you're a rat.

  • I'll be 36 this year and I still live like I did when I was a student. I'm too worried about getting used to nice things and have been for the past 20 years that I simply just don't spend money on anything other than food and bills and people around me tell me I should spoil myself more and go on more vacations and blah blah blah and I just want to scream at them xD

My life goal is to stay out of debt. You don't stay out of debt if you constantly fly around the world and buy expensive shit you don't need and replace your phone every three years or whatever I see some people do.

The good thing about my lifestyle is that when the next economic crisis hits, I am used to live like a rat so I don't have to dial back too much compared to some people who treat their bankaccount like a Yolo slot machine.

I sure do miss rotisserie chicken, though. That's one luxury I sadly got used to but whatever. Not the hardest thing to give up tbh and once in awhile you do get lucky that they are on sale to a reasonable price.

  • And yet we are the coddled, snowflake generation xD make it make sense. I feel worse for the younger generations, tbh. At least we got to spend our childhoods and teens relatively carefree, if a bit aimless and with the feeling of not being needed in society.

Young people and kids today are dealing with constant existential crisis. I guess the upside to that is that they won't have to deal with this aimlessness that we dealt with, but maybe it's better to feel aimless than to carry the future of our planet on your shoulders before the age of 10.

In the end, we are all dealing with the same problems right now and we can only do our best.

  • I actually wrote you a long message with recommendations and then the comment crashed because I wrote too much (I guess?) So I'll just stick to just movie recommendations this time. I've tried to stick to lesser known horror movies that I think are either brilliant or interesting or both. There are some movies I'd like to put on the list, but since you say you are well versed in horror, I assume you know those already as they are pretty mainstream. I will make a few exceptions along the way, though, as I may consider some of them mainstream, but they might still be movies that someone could have missed.

I think that is all for now. Hopefully there will be a few films on this list you haven't come across yet. They aren't all masterpieces, but I tried to pick films that I found entertaining and/or interesting and that I think deserve more recognition.

  • Read the fucking comment from Charles Darwin that I replied to initially. He was bringing up wokeness and I just joined in on that conversation. YOU are the one trolling and trying to sow chaos in a calm conversation.

    You are unbelievably illiterate.

  • If you were literate, you would be able to discern that the comment that I was originally replying to, in fact brought up wokeness and DEI themselves. You are spreading lies and false narratives to stir up drama where there wasn't any.

  • I think regulation is better than abolishing it.

With most initiatives that have been made in good faith to avoid bad actors, it will usually hit the little guy the hardest.

In my country, for example, you can apply for grants for your business for developing your business. Great right? Wrong. The bureaucracy is so crazy that small businesses, whom this grant was aimed towards, cannot feasibly take the grant. It is too expensive for them to go through all the steps to get the money for the developmental aspect of the business that they would lose money as a business and not be able to recoup their losses. The grant money are so small and aren't allowed to be used to run the business at all that it simply isn't worth it to even try. You would essentially have to work for free for days or weeks in some cases to get this tiny portion that will now sink your company instead of developing it.

However, a big business with many employees and time and money to spare, could easily apply for the grant and get it without a sweat, despite them not needing it at all.

That is how I'd see a potential ban of ads affect the market. The big businesses who got to benefit from ads and marketing in the past will continue to do well because people know them while any and all new start ups and smaller businesses would drown and go bankrupt due to them not being allowed to make people aware of their business.

It is a bit too utopic for my taste to suggest a ban. But regulation would be a good thing in my opinion.
