  • You realize that serving the video is incredibly expensive right? There’s a reason Lemmy doesn’t support video hosting

They also pay for hosting the thousands of videos from "little guys" that no one will watch

  • I think the price is very fair if you split the family plan with others

Also I think creators get a 55% cut for ad revenue which seems reasonable to me

  • Definitely thought this was c/unpopularopinions for a sec

  • The recent Snapdragon chips have been awesome, but that's not Apple's magic, it's their x86 to ARM translation layer

  • Wow S8Gen2 looking crazy strong there

  • Me after 1 small insult

  • Kinda conflicted here. Universities segregated based on sex/gender seem unnecessary to me, and merging with Western doesn't sound like a terrible plan.

But also I suspect this is done more for profit so I'm not convinced the merge will be handled well

  • If only even 5% of people were actually going to donate

  • The bullshit Reddit & Spez pulled is a lot worse than forcing ads on YT imo

  • Okay it's clearly imperfect but I don't see other similar platforms doing any better (most are doing much worse, e.g TikTok/Twitch)

A decentralized alternative would be nice but, I don't see many ad-block users out here donating their own $ to these projects

  • Not really being reasonable. I don't make much above min wage but buy YT Premium

  • Native & Canadian, not a history expert but my understanding is that on avg the US government was much more violent and aggressive with their colonization than Canada, even if Canada was pretty fucked too

  • I mostly use Telegram/Signal/Discord, but Snapchat and Insta are very popular here in Canada

  • Except the browser isn't the only thing that needs to have revenue, websites also do, so buying a browser upfront doesn't negate the need for ads

  • Okay but would that not require more user and data tracking that Google is already being criticized for?

  • I assume neither of us are in the ad business so we can't say for sure but, if they could charge more for skippable ads, I'd bet they would have already

  • My understanding is the only one of those with a decent privacy policy is Photos

  • Skippable ads don’t bring in enough revenue to cover infrastructure costs
