  • So Federation lets you move your data, but that's it? It still has global moderation and from what it sounds like all accounts are still dependent on the original BlueSky server to login. So if it goes down, doesn't that just take all servers with it?

    1. You're literally commenting on an article about AI image generation having to be shut down because it's not going well
    2. Pets.com also advertised at the Super Bowl, it doesn't mean much other than spending a lot of money
  • So is there an "AI is going just great" website yet like there is for Web3?

  • I did read the full article and am not convinced.

    1. The entire thing is predicated on the idea that TikTok is a feminizing, intelligence-destroying superweapon that can single handedly bring down civilizations (the only evidence cited are spurious correlations that treat IQ as a real science)
    2. Even if you take that as the average view of the US in China, it's still a leap to say they are, either actively or passively, planning the downfall of the US when the two countries are so entwined. It's just more US vs China fearmongering
    3. While he does say that TikTok needs to be regulated, nowhere does he advocate for larger scale curtailing of capitalism, and in fact ties all of his negative authoritarian points to socialism. It's singling out TikTok for the larger sins of an unregulated tech industry
  • TL;DR: right-wing hand-wringing over the app "turning the kids trans and lowering their IQ"

The author also has articles defending Israel and complaining about "woke ideology" if you need any more reason to skip it

  • I'm convinced that it's purposeful sabotage on Apple's part because if there's one Android user in a group chat iMessage fucks up images/videos/effects for all recipients. So being the lone Android holdout gets you pressured to switch

  • I've been happily using Mastodon but most of the users I followed on the old site went to BlueSky instead. There's no other way to keep up with them without it, and it sure as hell is better than Twitter these days

  • CEO pay is so ridiculous, there's obviously no way they're going to self regulate so we need to either tie it to worker pay/well-being or put it under the control of their employees

  • That's to be expected. What remains to be seen is how many of them will stick around after the initial surge.

  • You think a corporation would do that? Just go in front of the FTC and lie?

  • That's fair, I can see game devs being the kind of people who don't like attention

  • It's disappointing how often we hear very little of the designers and programmers behind classic games. You'd think more would have even a small cult following online, it's nice to see what the people who created some of your favorites things are up to years later

  • Haha nope, that's just the pattern of my placemats

  • What was the last new RTS? I wouldn't be surprised that a fanbase that trends very hardcore is extremely hungry for a new game in the genre from experienced devs

  • BOTW ruined Zelda for people like me who enjoyed the dungeons, unique items and narrative progression of older games even if it was a great game for open world fans. Pokemon is even further removed from that action-survival gameplay so it's not hard to see why people would want new games to be similar even if the current formula is stale.

  • It's not even "apps only" since they still show sponsored shows at the top. Probably only a matter of time before more ads worm their way in.

  • I think Shin Megami Tensei actually solves this with their capturing system, which is really more of a negotiating system. At any time during a battle, you can talk to an enemy demon and ask them to join you. They may request money, items, health/MP or require you to answer questions correctly in order to join you. It's neat since it has some risk/reward since you can keep plying them with more resources or you can say they've gotten enough and push them to join.

  • Never underestimate how much people want to see a trainwreck up close. Of course, pirating is free, I doubt many people want to pay money for a trainwreck, so not sure if Denuvo is really going to save them from losing actual sales

  • To be fair, I don't think there's anything wrong with using Pokemon as inspiration, and even when not the fact that Pokemon is so ubiquitous means that comparisons will be drawn regardless. But there's definitely more than a few Pals that seem to cross from inspiration to a suspicious amount of copying, and it's more about wanting to support artistic integrity than it is about Pokemon specifically.
