  • I am not 100% sure, but salmonella does not live in the meat, it lives on the surface. If the surface was thermally processed and the salmonella killed, then it should be salmonella free. It just tastes badly, and there could be other things that are not salmonella but bad for you (I am not knowledgeable enough about this, so don't now for sure if there are).

But this is why it is OK to eat medium rare stake and tuna tartar.

  • You thought that the original cartoon was serious???

  • Anything? Did I say that disruption was a problem? No. The stupidity is that by their action they make Trump election more likely.

  • [Genocide] refers to a coordinated plan aimed at destruction of the essential foundations of the life of national groups so that these groups wither and die like plants that have suffered a blight. The end may be accomplished by the forced disintegration of political and social institutions, of the culture of the people, of their language, their national feelings and their religion. It may be accomplished by wiping out all basis of personal security, liberty, health and dignity. When these means fail the machine gun can always be utilized as a last resort. Genocide is directed against a national group as an entity and the attack on individuals is only secondary to the annihilation of the national group to which they belong. 1946. Raphael Lemkin

I can easily see arguments that this situation is not applicable here. Israel stated goal is security, return of the hostages and Hamas destruction. (Hamas on the other side openly state destructions of Israel and Jews "from the river to the sea" as its one of the main goals, i.e. actual genocide). None of this fits into above definition. And while it is true that there are members of parliament from ultra right that want to do ethnic cleansing (but not genocide) this is not official position.

So, again, I will argue that calling this complex situation genocide is an easy political point scoring. Does not help discussion of the actual problem.

  • Yeah, I got this gist. I was always talking about Trump himself, since he was a topic of the original post. And it looks like you were expanding conversation to the republican party, which I did not catch. I do not think we have actual disagreements then.

  • I disagree. The situation is not simple and one sided. For example, I can easily say that if you are for immediate cease fire, then you are for Hamas staying in power. And Hamas does openly state that they would like to destroy all Jews in Israel and Israel itself, and in fact were showing how they would do it by recent events. Basically Hamas official policy is Jewish genocide. So, that makes you genocide supporter, right?

  • I am not claiming that ALL democrats do that. Those who support Israel do not think that this is genocide. Better?

I think the use of word genocide in this context is just scoring easy political points, honestly. What is happening there is not standard situation, but it does not look even remotely close to the genocide where everybody agrees that it is genocide.

  • When I talk to you, I use "you" and "you are". It is quite logical when I talk about you in third person, I can use "they", "they are".

  • The alternative is not exclusive, but traditional. Some words have double meaning, traditionally. A word "man", for example, can mean male, but can also be inclusive. Nobody in the right mind would argue that the word "mankind" means only male part of humanity.

  • Rome and Constantinople are different cities. In case if you did not know :)

  • They can protest, but to disrupt the fundraiser is the stupidest thing they can do. And democrats do not support genocide - they do not think that what happens in Gaza is genocide.

  • Oh! The republican behavior is similar to the past. "Though shell not vote against republican" even if it is Trump. The Trump himself, however, is unique.

  • Yeah, but Google, Facebook, and other megacorps profit from doing the same kind of thing and that seems to be fine.

  • Just imagine more than one dash.

  • I think I am just more optimistic/realistic than you are (I would not choose such depressing nickname for myself, for example).

First, I will deny you that people are evil and they are only about domination and profits. People are complex and beautiful creatures, but yes, there are ugly sides as well.

Second, if the world is about domination and profits, then we should see worse and worse life as time goes on. This is not the case. Just imagine how average life was 200 years, ago, 1000 years ago. 10000 years ago... Life is much better today, and will become only better in the future. True, there will be challenges, and setbacks, but we will evolve, we are smart and good enough for that. And AI will help :)

And thank you for calling me young. I did not hear this complement for a long time :)

  • We do not live just in capitalism. There are different political flavors of it. We live in democratic capitalism, which I believe is the best combination so far discovered (or the least evil). UBI is not contradictive to democratic capitalism and I believe we will come to something like that at the end.
