I completely agree about supporting Wikipedia. I actually do donate to Wikipedia via subscription and recommend others do as well. Being able to just download Wikipedia is also just such a boon. That being said, Wikipedia is just that, a pedia, like an encyclopedia. It's static knowledge. It can't rephrase things or simplify them or provide more context than it already has. A phonebook to a phonecall.
I would love to see a breakthrough in energy solutions for high-processing, but I doubt I will in my lifetime, and am pessimistic about such advances even being possible.
I mean, the fault lies with everybody - as we've expressed, the writing was on the wall the whole time.
I don't expect the ignorant children to prevent the adults from driving the car off the bridge (that's a metaphor for most Americans).
Well, I'm glad they spoke out publicly. Maybe they (World Governments) can put in a bit more elbow grease next time to prevent one of the world's largest militaries from being bought by an authoritarian country at discount prices.
The CIA can destabilize governments across the world.
Russia can take over U.S. "Democracy" right in front of the world.
I guess nobody has inside men anymore. Does Germany, France, Britian not have a CIA of their own?
My point is that these World Governments have kinda gotten soft if this is where we're at. Hell, the fact that Ukraine is still at war and not being physically backed is proof enough (though stepping in w/ Russia holding U.S. means that ship has sailed).
I feel like, if this were true, wtf are literally all the other countries' intelligence and agencies doing to prevent such a thing?
I'd like to think China, while mostly on Russia's side, would not want Putin having control over the U.S.
ofc most of NATO wouldn't want that either.
Is every other country incompetent, complicit, or is the U.S. just becoming its own oligarchy?
Once both major world militaries and hobbists are using it, it's jover. You can't close Pandora's Box. Whatever you want to call the current versions of "AI", it's only going to get better. Short of major world catastrophes, I expect it to drive not only technological advances but also energy/efficiency advances as well. The big internet conglomerates are already integrating it into search, and I fully expect within the next 5 years to have search transformed into an assistant-like chatbot (or something thereof).
I think it's shortsighted not to see the potential of accumulating society's knowledge and being able to present that to people in an understandable way.
I don't expect it to happen overnight. I'm not expecting iRobot or Android levels of consciousness any time soon, but the world is progressing toward the automation of many things - driven by Capital(ism) - which is powerful in itself.
Operating in China and having 10% of your company publicly owned by an entity of the Chinese government are two different things
I don't think it is. Steam operates in China and even allows China to censor the Steam store page and games as needed. Valve doesn't take much issue bending over for China either in that regard. EGS and Steam are both Corporations and China is a large market.
And the cherry on top is their close relationship with tencent, aka one facet of the propaganda arm of the CCP.
I see this a lot and... do they though? From what I can tell, Steam also operates in China. Sure, Tencent invested in EGS, but not in any kind of controlling stake. Tencent does invest in tech and EGS is probably a solid investment.
I don't think the GoG numbers matter, and I do think Steam's days are numbered if they continue on their current course (like, within the next 50 years, not tomorrow, but in my lifetime). GoGs DRM free and game archive mantra is going to give them longevity. The World continues to digitize, and eventually, society is going to have to grapple with Internet privacy and digital ownership. Steam on the otherhand is catering to the same crowd EGS is at a 30% tax. No doubt Steam has the numbers, no doubt they will for awhile, but I do think they will eventually run out of Steam if they don't invest in a more sustainable business model.
To be clear, I don't hate Steam or am in any way rooting against Steam, this is just my PoV in comparing their business model to EGS who has primarily invested in their UE5 engine. Valve on the otherthand does well with hardware, Steamdeck and SteamVR I think are both solid.
I also don't believe that EGS is as bad as a company as people make them out to be.
Could you point to these games or any documentation on how a developer may reach out to Valve regarding developing in the Source 2 Engine?
I was able to find sources for the Source engine, but not Source 2 which Valve has been primarily making games on in the last 10 years. In any case, neither are as widely supported or available as UE5.
I find it strange that you think GOG has a better business model than Steam and will be more competitive long-term. Why do you think so?
Steam is it's own DRM system. Control (2020) is a perfect example. You can't run that from your steamapps folder due to Steams DRM to verify a purchase license. GoG on the other hand has the same game, usually cheaper, an runs entirely independent of any platform. Not every Steam game is like this, but most major releases are.
The nice thing about a "Free" Engine is that anyone can pick it up. This means the more people pick it up, the more tutorials, the more docs, the most common issues are found, the more common solutions, etc. So while you believe that performance is an issue, it really is one of the better available engines out there and it can only get better. Again, Steam does not let other people use their Engine - what's the next best free thing - Unity?
A lot of Steam Stans here.
Here's some neat facts:
- Epic Games is the same Source Developers behind Unreal Engine 5. UE5 is arguably the best game engine right now for modern graphics.
- Epic Games Unreal Engine 5 is Free to start developing and only kicks in commission after X% of sales.
- Both Steam and GoG take a ~30% commission on all game sales.
- Steam games aren't DRM-free (neither is EGS, but 0% + the driving force behind UE5?)
- The Steam Source 2 Engine is proprietary; only their team can develop Source games.
It sucks that EGS is looking to suck up games, customers, data, etc. Their App / Interface also kinda sucks. UE5 on the other hand kinda rules, and Steam has been quietly collecting cheques while their Source Engine has collected dust. Almost all my games are on Steam but the ones I want to keep I've been getting through GoG.
GoG I think has a solid business model of DRM free games and game preservation. EGS is leading in one of the industry's most innovative and developer-accessible game engines for the foreseeable future. Steam is going to have to make some tough decisions I think to compete as time goes on.
Absolutely batffling...
This is a group of people who feel they've been unfairly made fun of for too long finally getting their revenge.
As always, Simpsons did it...

A couple things:
1). I lowkey expect Coachella to have a pretty good % pretentious rich folk (Trust Fund Babies) who this ain't gonna resonate with from an old white dude.
2). I kinda would have expected AOC instead of Bernie to maybe connect with the younger folk better? But the article says she's trying to reach Neil Young fans? Why aren't these roles reversed?
The US has a long history of wartime elections.
The US has a long time history of a lot of things that this administration is just ignoring or overstepping so I'm not sure that matters during this time. This is not a normal time in the U.S.
Zelensky was able to legitimately do what he did because a large portion of his country is occupied by foreign forces and he has a positive rating in the unoccupied area.
Absolutely not arguing that. What Zelensky did / is doing is legitimate, I'm not here to argue against that but what I believe Trump see's as an opportunity based on his meetings with Zelensky.
I don't think that matters for what I perceive Trump's goal to be, just based on his past history. I'm thinking back to Covid when he saw that Chlorox info before a briefing and mentioned maybe injecting (or ingesting?) bleach. I believe that he sees Zelenski extend his power due to wartime and I believe he thinks he will be able to do the same. Now he's just looking for an enemy to point the U.S. at.
Imagine another 9/11 happening mixed with a media blitz under the DJT administration. While I don't believe they would be able to pull this off, the thought of the rallying against a specific enemy due to an attack on American soil has a history of rallying the people.
The first step is to remove international dependence on things that we would need for a wartime industry. This is why he's cutting ties with NAFTA allies. We can't have them limiting resources we would need for wartime because they certainly won't agree with what we end up doing. I believe this is why he rallied so hard for Steel workers during his first term too (but failed) to progress this same industry. In the next year or 2 when the factories and industry catches up is when we're going to start to see the visible sparks of war.
To add onto this one more time - I also think that his interactions with Putin plays a role as well. The people of Russia were not able to stop Putin in his war with Ukraine and I believe that DJT thinks he can pull something similar off. This may as well be possible - he has a cult fanbase and the American people aren't rallying against a Billionaire buying politicians and running vote lotteries - I'm not sure anything will rally the American people like we've seen in the past.
It's a slow slippery ride into complacency where things progressively get more illegal and illicit and the headlines come and go too quick for the American people to register. It really is going to be a slow, bloodless revolution from The Right. When the time comes and American is at war with a Foreign power (maybe the Mexican Cartel, which would track with Trumps war on drugs and immigration) the American people will mostly accept it, as they have everything else illicit DJT has done so far in his short term in office.
I agree, Ukraine didn't start the war, but that doesn't change what happened and what I believe Trump's view of it regarding extending his power.
Struggling is a bit much… Sure, it’s going to get there, but current levels are not a struggle.
Hard disagree. It's the 3rd biggest line item in the Budget after Social Security and Medicaid. Even if the Democrats were in office, the debt payments would have been a struggle to get under control - hard choices did need to be made in this regard.
I think people are giving Republicans too much credit. The 3rd term he's talking about is if the U.S. is in the midst of a war - he's literally thinking about what Zelenski did in Ukraine to extend his power / term. I don't see that as a far-fetched idea either. Let's be real, war is money(YouTube Link), and the U.S. is struggling with debt. They pull back trade agreements with allies to reignite national industries for the coming years. They're looking to make somebody an enemy to reignite the economy and retain power. I'd like to think that there's no way to make this work, I'd like to think DJT won't make it past the first few years, but we won't know til' we know.
I think it's all theater to win over all the rightwing folx that he cultivated during this tour. These are the folx that are gonna be hurt the most from this bill and are just ignorant enough to buy a Tesla out of some weird culty appreciation. Mans trying to salvage a lagging brand.
