  • At this point we're discussing the mother/daughter screen locking policy. It doesn't matter what messaging app they use, if they rely solely on Face/Touch ID, the police may force then to unlock their phone anyway.

  • Ops, my bad. I was under the impression the only reason WhatsApp is encrypted today is because they already were by the time FB bought them.

They paid US$ 20B to buy WhatsApp, and encryption is a major deterrent for them scanning all messages to enhance their targeted advertising business.

  • I have not played the pixel remasters, but I feel they'd look better I they adopted the same pixel art style from FF4 The Complete Collection (PSP).

If consumers voted with their wallets that the Pixel Remasters are fine, I'm not confident further remasters will be any better.

  • Some banking apps are asking for live-selfies for authentication, so it's not entirely useless.

  • So the writing's on the wall: Imgur will sooner or later intensify its enshitification, so it's not safe relying on it for image/gif uploads for Lemmy...

  • WhatsApp was not created by Facebook. It used to be an independent company which major selling point was offering free encrypted messaging to the masses, which was mostly relevant to non-US users as they're charged for SMS usage more directly (it doesn't come free and unlimited on most plans).

It was bought by Facebook in 2014 and by 2016 they implement end-to-end encryption. There's already various cases of courts around the world trying to compel WhatsApp to hand over messages but they didn't because they simply don't store the messages on their servers, and when the messages pass through their servers they're encrypted by design.

  • Perhaps this is a blessing in disguise. Having constant notifications certainly doesn't help lower the dopamine hits. 🧘‍♂️

  • If Piped is basically a proxy to access YouTube videos, who pays for this proxy (which shouldn't be cheap)?

  • To be fair, if the mother/daughter communicated through WhatsApp they'd not be caught, because it's an end-to-end encrypted messaging platform. But as they chose FB Messenger, they got vulnerable to a court order forcing Facebook to hand over data.

  • I'm out of the loop on this subject. I know Onedrive previously offered 15GB to free users, then strunk it to 5GB, but kept the larger amount to legacy users.

Have they made another reduction recently?

In my case I wat trying to comment under another user's comment, but to the post itself. On kbin.social . Tried all possible methods: wefwef, Connect, Thunder, Liftoff, Summit, Firefox browser, and all failed. Edit: by the way, this comment doesn't show up on my user profile. Edit2: It shows up after my 1st edit. 😐

  • If I may ask, what's the difference between those two you mentioned and "Active"?

  • The point is the "timing" of the received mail. If you receive a password reset immediately after requesting one, that's strong evidence the mail is legit.

  • Recently LinusTechTips posted a video vouching for Roku TVs. It seems they have a really snappy UI with no ads.

  • My email is mostly used to receive confirmation messages when creating online accounts, recovery links to forgotten passwords, confirmation of purchases, confirmation of banking transactions, etc. These are all cases of mails that arrive as an immediate response to some action I took, so I know they're legit and don't fear clicking on their links if necessary to complete my task.

However, I'm more suspecious of mails that I receive unprompted. In these cases I see no reason to go clicking anything, especially if it's from a company that I have no previous relationship.

Certainly it is illegal to distribute Vanced because it's a modified version of Youtube official app, which is copyrighted.

Re-vanced may have found a workaround so that users modify the app themselves, but Google may claim DMCA's anti-circunvention rule is being breached, and sue the relevant parties if they wanted to.

  • If the criteria of comparison is being open source and long-lived, no other YouTuber player app matches NewPipe. There's Vanced/ReVanced, but they're on another category and border the illegal.

If you're asking because you're tired of NewPipe's UI, I read that the developers are planning to revamp it to get rid of some technological debt and streamline further development.

  • 2023 - 30 = 1993. If your year of reference is this, then most SNES games would not be considered "retro". Pokemon Green was only released in 1996.

  • I was under the impression iAMA was pretty much dead after Victoria was fired. Has any AMA of note occured there since then?
