I use Lemmy and moved here in protest of the Reddit API pricing changes, but I'm not entirely opposed to other forms of social media. I'm aware of the privacy implications of a lot of them, and try to manage my use of them accordingly. I have Instagram and Snapchat etc which I have used for years to keep in touch with friends. 90% of my friends use Facebook messagenger to IM and I think that's pretty standard in Australia. I can't justify cutting that many people off for privacy reasons. I understand the privacy implications of using these. It's a balance. Social media can be bad for mental health, but a lack of social connection can be too. You need to find your own balance.

They don't want to be contacted. I don't think we have any moral obligation to supply them with medicines or technologies that they don't want, even if they would objectively improve their quality of life.

No they will probably never advance substantially in technology. To get to where the developed world is today took centuries of industrialisation and trade.

But there are, presumably, happy with the status quo.

I think AR and VR are actually progressing at a reasonable pace, tech like the apple vision pro and the bigscreen beyond are beginning to converge to a comfortable and powerful experience and AR will be better supported by a platform like the vision pro than by any previous major industrial AI offerings like the hololens. I think in the short term people will move to external compute on a puck worn on the waist much like the battery of the vision pro was but with all or most of the compute power.

I think BEVs will continue to advance, without even considering a major technological breakthrough I expect they will out-range many ICE vehicles very soon. If solid state truly goes commercial scale it will be even sooner.

Mobile phones I actually think are stagnating. You're right that there's more power in them than necessary these days. Batteries get bigger and cameras get better but not much else changes. Interested to see where they go.

Standard resin becomes very weak at even low temperatures. There are special heat tolerant resins you can buy though.

Australia: 20 days PTO by law, 13 public holidays (depends on the state, but no less than 10 which are national), 10 separate days for use when sick or caring for someone who is sick. There's more entitlements for different scenarios but this is pretty much the baseline.

It shouldn't be, but German Auto makers are extremely slow to evolve due to their ridiculous bureaucracy. They've had ages to get on top of it and ignored it and they should pay the price for that, but they're too big to fail for their countries economies. In private messages outside of work, yes, it comes across passive aggressive and is a hard stop to a conversation. In work context though, it's pretty common on teams as an acknowledgement, though I still think it's nicer to use like a heart react then actually reply.

The average use case for the majority of truck owners in the US does not involve towing. Light trucks are driven an average of around 30 miles per day, which is why I say for most people they're actually in a pretty good position, other than being pretty expensive vehicles of course. If you own a caravan or something and are doing regular massive road trips, you are the minority that these vehicles still don't cater to.

The Silverado EV and F150 lightning seem pretty decent from the specs, but towing anything they still seriously suck. But for most people they're actually already pretty good... Unlike the cyber truck.

It exists but anything that passively draws power would not normally be preferred for automotive. However with EVs it might not be such a big deal due to the enormous battery.

And thus should require backup batteries isolated from the main power bus of the vehicle, which would be so cost prohibitive the entire idea is made redundant.

I consider the electronic door handles to be a violation of functional safety ISO 26262. I would think that in a fire situation the doors electronics are pretty unlikely to work. The manual release is not a good control because a reasonable person isn't necessarily going to know it exists. I work in the automotive industry and most organisations I have worked with are big old manufacturers and they think extremely long and hard about this kind of thing. Sadly I doubt Tesla cares so much about ISO standards.

In the musical wicked which I suppose is canon and happens at the same time, Glenda reveals to Madame Morrible that the wicked witch of the west will probably show herself if her sister (the wicked witch of the east) is in danger. So Morrible summons the tornado to threaten the sister which coincidentally brings along Dorothy. Glenda secretly was good friends with Elphaba (WWotW) so wouldn't have intentionally gotten her sister killed. There was a lot of politics and propaganda and stuff, but Glenda wasn't really a villain, just a vain person who found it easier to support an autocracy. Someone who has read the books could probably explains it all, sorry if I've ruined your headcanon!

This isn't surprising news. He's always been an asshole but it seems pretty widely agreed that he lost his filter somewhere around COVID so the reporting of 2022 isn't a shock at all. In fact I'm shocked to find out it's only since 2022?!

If you have the room for it and don't already, you should see if you can get a shock mount for the mic if you can't put it on a boom. It would make a big difference for those vibrations!

I use a keychron at work and it's very good for the price. Not a heap to choose from in the 100% range but all very reasonably priced. If you're after serious quietness you probably want linear switches but these are often pretty polarising to people. There's no tactile click at all when you've activated the key. You might be surprised what you can get away with on VC though, I use a condenser mic and a keyboard with blue keys and generally have no problems with people hearing it. Good mic positioning on a boom helps a lot, and some new noise cancelling technologies are pretty excellent at blocking clicks. With a headset mic it would be really unlikely to be heard.
