I'm okay. Home lab is (mostly) humming along nicely. I got a new (to me) car last week which has been a joyous contrast to the half-dead 2002 Taurus I've been dragging along for 2+ years. Work is work. I asked to start working 10's, which my boss signed off on, so I'm pretty happy about that.
I don't know what it is about this year, but I'm struggling to get in the Halloween mood. It's usually my favorite holiday but I'm just not feeling it for some reason.
Probably not. I live in a pretty conservative community where local connections really matter for elections, and sadly I have neither column A nor column B going for me. Also despite looking like the kind of person who would show up to a trucker protest I really don't handle confrontation well.
BUT local elections are super important and I think you should definitely give it a go if you think you've got the stuff.
I think it definitely depends on the sort of game. I don't mind paying AAA pricing for a game that actually feels like the studio gave a rat's ass about providing good value. BG3, for example, was very much worth what I paid for it even just with the ~100 hours I got out of my first playthrough.
Of course, there have also been value kings that I'm not sure will ever be beaten for me in terms of price to hours played. Minecraft and Terraria are good examples here. I got Minecraft during either late Infdev or early Alpha, and so I paid fuck all compared to the current price. Considering I've probably put tens of thousands of hours into that shitshow in the over 13 years that I've played it, and I'd say it's more than been worth it. The same goes for Terraria. At 1.5k hours of playtime and counting, it'd've been worth it to me even at far more than the $10 price tag that I (probably) got it at way back when.
So tl;dr, I'd say that if a game is truly well-made and enjoyable, then I don't mind paying whatever the devs need to charge to keep their doors open. Bonus points if I can purchase the game DRM-free somehow.
I will be sure to inject my feed with art and news of foxes whereever I end up. Thanks!
The admin vibe check is definitely important for me, so that's part of the reason why I'm feeling things out and seeing where people have liked hanging out.
The one that I do know about is hachyderm.io, since that's where the official Beehaw account is. I'm probably leaning in that direction but I'm curious what other instances people like. :)
I had a W540 which I brought back from the dead and upgraded to the maximum (4th gen i7, NVIDIA QUADRO, 16GB DDR3, SSD). The only thing I wanted to do that I ultimately didn't was replace the display with one of the 3K ones that they made back then. Long story short I gave it away because I thought I was gonna go to college and wanted a lighter device with better battery life. In hindsight I didn't need the new machine. I miss my W540 a lot, and I sincerely hope you have fun with your T430.
See, I figured consoles might actually be more likely to cross that finish line first. My logic is that the controlled platforms would give developers a) potential access to a more bare-metal style of storage medium maybe not practical on PC, and b) a consistent performance target (no needing to account for people using those pesky hard drives!)
I feel like we're maybe already starting to see this with the PlayStation 5, but it probably also depends on how much work actually goes into optimization for these development teams.
Less a design choice and more a technical feat, but I'm hoping that we start to see the phase-out of loading screens and more of a push toward seamless gameplay. I was watching a video from the newest Spiderman and it was pretty damn cool. Practical for all games? Maybe not for a while. But I certaintly would like to see more investment in leveraging improvements in disk and memory capabilities going forward.
One of my all-time favorite games, Barony, just added an option that replaces spiders with isopods. I'm not an arachnophobe, but I thought it was funny and thoughtful that they did that.
One thing I like about about Flatpak in particular is it allows me to have newer applications on distributions with older package bases (for instance, Debian.) I don't much care for rolling release distros, and I'm not a fan of having to hunt for a 3rd-party repository, so for that purpose I really love the option to just get a Flatpak.
Since nobody has said it yet: Ubuntu server or Debian. /s
In seriousness, I use both. They're pretty great. Note that if you use Ubuntu server you can get Ubuntu Pro free for up to three devices. This comes with ten years (!) of security patches. Great if you aren't keen on upgrading anytime soon.
PiHole and new NAS are all set up. I had a disk corruption while moving data over (thanks btrfs). Nothing super important was on there, but now I'm going to get to spend my evening sifting through photorec output. After that it'll be on to getting everything integrated with Nextcloud, and then world domination?
I'm okay. I'm trying to avoid the news cycle, for obvious reasons, which overall has probably been a net positive for me. I'm planning on switching to a new (to me) NAS this weekend, and I'll probably also be getting PiHole set up. The latter is going to be done on a Raspberry Pi 1B+, so that should be fairly interesting. There's a case printing for it at my local computer shop as we speak!
Edit: apparently it's actually a regular Pi B 512MB so now I have to print another, less fancy case 😭
I had a phase where I'd basically do the same - wake up at four and be incredibly snappy for the rest of the morning. It eventually passed, and I hope the same will be said for yours.
I'm okay. I'm mostly settled in my new place. Landlord and Comcast are both here fixing a few issues and getting internet installed. I got a nice used dining set, but beyond that I'm somewhat lacking in furniture right now.
