  • As an SUV owner, I agree. It tries to do too many things, so it's not good at any of them. When we had kids, I wanted a minivan. They're ugly, they don't get good gas mileage, their handling is like a pregnant yak- but if you need to haul around kids and their stuff, there's nothing better. My wife at least considered it, but we ended up with a hybrid SUV. I don't completely hate it, but I still would rather have gotten a minivan.

  • I feel like if I pay ~$40 for a digital item.. I should have the same rights with it as the physical copy.

That's the whole problem - you don't. Your feelings are irrelevant. If you want that, you need to demand it, and refuse to do business with those who will not provide it. Of course they won't, so just stop buying digital copies, keep physical media alive.

  • "I'm never paying, I want it for free" which jacks the prices for the rest of us

It doesn't. Those people are not a loss- they would not have bought even if piracy was impossible/unavailable, they would just do without. Companies claiming they have to raise prices to compensate for people who won't buy their crap is a lie, and you are a fool to believe it.

  • Actually that's not the purpose of copyright - people would be able to profit without copyright. You can argue about how much or how little they could profit, or how much more or less convenient it would be to consume their work. The purpose of copyright is to limit this period of exclusivity, and ensure that after the period expires, ownership reverts to the people. It's a trade- government allows exclusive profit on the condition that it is temporary.

The problem is copyright has been perverted over the last hundred years, mostly by Disney, to the point that it is effectively permanent.

  • As soon as you release something to the world, you have given up some control over the thing- otherwise, people would have to come to you to see/hear your art, which would limit the profits considerably.

  • I grew up in the city (beacon Hill in Boston) then ended up in the suburbs for a while, then back to the city again. Most of my suburban friends refused to come visit me, they tend to see "the city" as one thing, like they hear about rougher parts of town and think everywhere is like that... And they were afraid of the subway...

  • I had a coworker once try to tell me I pronounced nihilism wrong - I say it nee... he claimed nye... was correct. He made such a a stink about it, actually yelling at me, that other coworkers were gathering around hoping for a fight... Somebody had a dictionary, so I looked it up, and of course both are listed as correct. He then moved the goalposts saying his way was "more" correct... but I got the last word - "I DON'T CARE!"
