  • Look, where you can actually achieve things is in the Democratic primaries. Find the furthest left person you can and try to make them the candidate. Move the party left. Get your brand of politician onto the ballot on one of the teams that can win. Replicate that across the country and I guess the Democrats become communists, though I can't imagine things flipping that far. You still have to deal with swing states that will be much harder to get communist candidates elected even in a major party.

That's the only realistic way to accomplish your goal without either waiting for one party to commit suicide or futilely taking up arms to try to replace the whole system of government.

That's not even my political persuasion, but look I'll be long dead before that ever happens so more power to you. We've swung way too far right and I'll work with anyone to swing it back the other way.

  • My folks are chill. My mom and her friends are passionately cool. My dad DGAF. He's cool, but he's also a charter boat captain which means lots of sportsmen so he has to be able to ignore/get along with anyone. He just gives a noncommittal grunt and steers the conversation back to fishing.

My father in law is okay. Ex cop so opposite of ACAB. Spouts Fox News bullshit, but he sat out the last election because he has like 8 granddaughters and at least one gay grandson. He's a good guy as long as you don't talk about anything political. He accepted my kid when they identified as trans for a bit. (Jury's still out. Don't care, they just don't seem committed to anything right now.)

His brothers, though, what fucking assholes. I have to tolerate them for my wife's sake because she can't deal with family strife but I actually had to sit in a public restaurant with one of them making buck teeth and shouting "Ching Chang Chong" when saying something insulting about Asians, then "oh but now I'm racist." Right you are, motherfucker. Disgusting. Humiliating.

My ability to even mildly rebuke them is limited by my need to keep the peace for my wife. But if I could I'd just tell them to let me know when they are done acting that way, and I'd get a drink at the bar.

  • When I was really little, my uncle was pulling me behind a motorcycle on one of those plastic kids sleds and I rolled off face first into a pine tree.

Or maybe it was a couple years later when I got in a fight in line to go to the library and a kid grabbed the back of my head and smashed my temple onto the corner of a Formica countertop.

Or it could be when I caught the biggest guy in my Army unit jerking it and couldn't keep my mouth shut and he did his level best to break my jaw. He must've had 6" and 100 lbs on me. Fortunately my head got in the way and I had to get stitches in my forehead from the punch and in the back of my head from the doorway he knocked my head into.

There were some other contenders, but those three all involved stitches and none of the others did.

  • There is a need for heavy math in the field of programming, but most programmers will not ever need it. I've been a developer for over 25 years and I'll bet I've never needed anything more complicated than Boolean algebra except for maybe 3 times. Which is infuriating when I get asked to write a stupid algorithm on every damn job interview. Like I think there is a need for maybe one math guy in a whole department.

Most programming is not "web scale." Even though every hiring manager seems to think their needs are particularly unusual or complex. With the exception of maybe the S&P 50 or something, they aren't.

  • We definitely need any help we can get with PA. If PA goes blue that opens up a few avenues to the White House. Without it I think the only route is taking every single other swing state. Or maybe a surprise flip of a red state.

  • It was not a mistake. A mistake would be flailing around right now, unsure who the candidate would even be while everyone trash talks their non-preferred candidates to show Trump what attacks will stick. A mistake would be to skip over the black woman presumptive nominee and risk alienating a critical voting block that Trump has been courting with some limited success.

There was no other possible good option in this case. And the proof is in the pudding. Kamala is going gangbusters.
