That's the best part of this whole thing by the way. We do have plenty of rare earths accessible in the US. We even have all the raw material mines we would require. They're just being lazy.

I'm pissed. There was always a simple answer. Freeze the front line and make it clear to Putin that Ukraine is now their version of Taiwan. They could keep trying to attack but the Ukrainians are now backed by the full might of the American military. They can keep what they already have but anything else is a step too far.

Yeah it's possible Zelensky doesn't go for that deal but damn, they didn't even try for the simplest option that stops the fighting, gets the payments Trump so desperately wants and guarantees Ukraine's security. They literally just presented an extortion scheme as the only option, with "trust me bro" as the guarantee.

If SCOTUS goes completely rogue and just declares Congress to be unconstitutional then all bets are off. And yeah that's scary. But within the rules there are still things that could be done.

I just watched the last half of the full meeting. Zelensky asked what guarantees there are the Russians won't just invade again. The subtext of which is an offer to house US troops in Ukraine. But all the fucking clown car heard was a challenge to their machismo.

So they shouted him down and just loudly asserted he would either sign their deal or fight it out. Along the way they manage to insult him by treating him like a child and pretending that previous broken agreements, (invasion of Crimea, Invasion of Donetsk, and Invasion of Ukraine) were because Putin didn't respect the American President enough. But Putin is also the victim in all of this according to Trump.

I've seen better diplomacy from a high school football team.

For more subtext, if there were any real guarantees then this would not have happened in the meeting with the press. Zelensky would have told reporters there were guarantees. This entire blow up means that Trump already told him there would be no guarantees other than the honor system. Which, even if Trump is right, (Putin respects Trump and won't invade while he's president), Zelensky knows that means Putin will invade again in 2028 after Trump's term is over. And that's without getting into all of the implications about Putin holding this over Trump's head for concessions so Trump can appear to be the peacemaker.

I agree with Trump on one thing. We're fucking around with World War 3, but Trump isn't a peacemaker, he's Chamberlain. Right down to berating the leaders who are asking for help to stop the aggressive country.

They could. They absolutely could. They could pass laws regulating the Supreme Court and pass laws specifically reserving powers to itself, including more congressional agencies. Like a congressional department of justice, a congressional law enforcement arm, and a law removing the president from control of military appointments and nominations. (Effectively giving him a force made by Congress, that he can command but cannot easily subvert)

It won't go so far as being like North Korea. But there are countries out there that don't get good trade deals because of this exact problem. We will have to pay more for every trade deal we make for the next 30 years because other countries can't be sure we'll keep our end of it. It's just like getting a loan with a bad credit rating. You can still get the loan but the bank is going to demand more compensation because of the risk.

It's a win win for them. They get a political win, a promise of money, or both. There's still a chance the deal gets signed in order to keep getting American weapons. From Zelensky's point of view they can always slow roll the payments.

The Donetsk conflict was started by militias trained, supplied, and paid by Russia. With Russian troops entering Donestk for technical support, logistical support, and really just any help they needed including combat units to beat back the Ukrainian Army at several points.

I keep trying to tell people classical liberals were bastards. There's this perception that just because we can vote that means we can't be the bad guys. It's an ideological catechism that actually fits with the above picture. If Fascism is just whenever mass suffering and death is perpetrated but also World War 2 non voting systems run by strong men then it gives the modern person living in a democracy permission to stop paying attention. After all they can vote and their guy would never.

We need to get this through people's heads, stop putting flashy words on human rights violations and start holding leaders accountable. Because a culture of not being accountable is how you get actual Fascism.

So the thing is classical liberals were (and are) capable of a lot of damage without Fascism. Fascism is a specific ideology. Not the suffering people are capable of creating. It's important to understand that your normal democracy is perfectly capable of creating mass suffering.

There's miscarriages of justice every day in this country. We need this attitude in cases where they're trying someone for no charge other than resisting arrest just as much as that specific case.
