    Elon Musk secretly ordered his engineers to turn off his company’s Starlink satellite communications network near the Crimean coast last year to disrupt a Ukrainian sneak attack on the Russian naval fleet, according to an excerpt adapted from Walter Isaacson’s new biography of the eccentric billionaire titled “Elon Musk.”

    As Ukrainian submarine drones strapped with explosives approached the Russian fleet, they “lost connectivity and washed ashore harmlessly,” Isaacson writes.

  • The timing is the issue. If Musk had disallowed use of Starlink for drone control from the start, then that's one thing.

    If he had notified the Ukraine Armed forces that he was going to do it ahead of time, that would have been best.

    However, he ordered that their access be disrupted while an attack on the Russian Navy was going to take place. Meaning Starlink access was cut just at the worst time and caused the drones to simply wash ashore.

    That same Navy has been causing thousands of civilian casualties.

    How Musk knew Ukraine was going to launch an attack but hadn't hit their targets yet is another concerning fact.

    CNN on Thursday quoted an excerpt from the biography Elon Musk by Walter Isaacson, which described how armed submarine drones were approaching a Russian fleet near the Crimean coast when they “lost connectivity and washed ashore harmlessly”.

    The biography, due out on Tuesday, alleges Musk ordered Starlink engineers to turn off the service in the area of the attack because of his concern that Vladimir Putin would respond with nuclear weapons to a Ukrainian attack on Russian-occupied Crimea.

    It would be the difference between GM shutting down your car remotely when it's parked after sending you notice vs GM shutting off your car when you're at highway speeds and taking an exit.

    A quick idea of what cooling/heating you need is your square footage (assuming 8ft ceilings) x 20.

    So 600 sq ft of area would need a 1 ton AC or 12,000BTU. Again complicated by outdoor temperature, insulation of the home, and other factors.

    Anyway, what the op was saying, for the same tonnage (cooling capacity) old ACs used a ton of electricity. Newer split units are crazy efficient.

    Like in 2000 the new requirement for a home AC was a SEER (cooling vs electric usage) of 10. The higher the rating, the less electricity used for a given cooling capacity.

    Nowadays you can get the cheaper split units which have ratings of 19-23 SEER2. So they use half or less than half the electricity for the same cooling. Also they can work as heaters in a pinch.

    Edit: Quick googling shows that ACs from the 80s could be as inefficient as 6-7 SEER. So a modern 21 SEER2 unit would use 1/3rd the electricity!

  • I almost wonder if the contracts were awarded late in the last term with the expectation that the new admin would cancel them and have to pay huge contract termination fees. Thus earning these firms large amounts of pure profit (no labor and no materials).

  • Indeed. I did something like I mentioned above + we replaced the master bathroom carpet (yuck) with tiles for pretty cheap. In return we locked in a 1 year rent reduction to recoup our costs and 2 years at a low rate.

    It worked out for everyone. We didn't have to live with disgusting bathroom carpets, the place looked nicer for the rest of our rental period, it let us save money to put a down payment on a house, and we didn't have the temptation to move to a "nicer looking" place and spend money and time on moving again.

    In the end, the landlord got back a place that was more attractive to future renters.

    The key is to ensure your landlord is a decent person (they exist). Ours only had the one house they were renting (used to be their house before they bought a new house in a better school district and decided to rent vs sell).

    If it's a large holding company that is known to screw over tenants? Yeah fuck them, do the bare minimum and move out.

  • The way to do it is to work in either a rent decrease for X months for the work and materials or lock in a low rent for X years based on the work being done.

    Another alternative is to do the above and get the landlord to supply the materials.

    I've done it in the past and it has worked out well though usually for minor things (like replacing generic doorknobs with nicer looking ones, replacing a toilet with a better flushing one, or installing a ceiling fan).

    Adding insulation to the attic if it's missing in spots can also make sense to do if you're paying the utilities. Though again I would get the landlord to at a minimum to pay for materials or discount it from the rent.

    If the upgrades are things that will help make the unit more marketable when you move out, then they'd be dumb to turn it down.

  • It's good in that it is more consistent during the day due to how it works and is absorbed by the body. For some that Adderall didn't work (or stopped working) Vyvanse was a good alternative, but at a much higher cost.

  • At the very minimum, there should be cognitive tests to ensure they have their mental faculties and agency.

    There's some folks who are still sharp well into their 80s.

    Others can suffer dementia and other severe cognitive issues in their 30s and 40s.

    Putting an arbitrary age limit (like say 65) would also keep out any folks who want to run after they retire (and who can't afford to run for office before then).

    You can switch between all the different possible orders and season breakdowns and not make Hulu Season #11.

    By broadcast, the first 4 produced seasons were broadcast as 5 seasons with weird breaks (Typical Fox).

    Example, season 1 was produced as 13 episodes, Fox aired 9 episodes, then aired the last 4 episodes of season 1 as the first of season 2.

    This is the reason why Plex season 2 episode descriptions are off by about 4 episodes if you ripped your DVDs but play them through Plex.

    The fox run ends with "The Devils hands are idle playthings"

    The Comedy Central run starts with "Rebirth"

    Between the two there were 4 movies which are broken down into 16 episodes for broadcast.

    4 Fox (production) seasons + 1 season with the 4 movies + 3 Comedy Central Seasons = 8 pre Hulu seasons making the Hulu season #9

    Hulu season is #8 if you don't count the DVD season

    Hulu Season is #9 if with Fox 5 aired seasons + DVD + 3x CC

    Counting each DVD as a season (which seems very wrong) makes it either 12 or 13.
