  • First, it didn’t get taken down so I’m not sure why you shared this. Secondly, this definitely appears to be a troll post so yeah people usually don’t like being trolled. I’m not sure why you’re acting surprised.

Edit: ignore me, I'm ignorant of the ways of twitter.

  • I think a lot of people might not realize how strategically constrained international relations are. There are only so many possible solutions to this conflict and Trump’s incompetence or malevolence can only interfere to a certain extent. Especially when others within the government who are negotiating this deal have real interests in protecting Ukraine.

That said, I think the most likely outcome is no deal but we’ll see.

  • No one knows the future so I think this kind of speculation is a bit pointless. Also, there can be many different kinds of collapse that look very different.

I don’t think the US is going to transition into some kind of mad max scenario or glorious people’s republic any time soon, and maybe not ever. It may suffer some serious hardships in the coming decades due to eroding democratic values and the unfolding climate emergency. These hardships could lead to substantial changes in economics or governance but probably not what people imagine in terms of collapse.

  • This is cool but I can’t help but feel slightly disappointed at the slow pace of research in this field. The cause of type 1 diabetes is well understood and we knew this treatment was possible for decades but it still took until now to finally make it happen. Gene therapy has the possibility of curing almost any disease, at least in theory, but the amount of time even simple treatments like this have taken to develop makes me feel we won’t live to see such advances.

  • Gotta focus on what you personally have control over. We can't directly influence the way other people behave, especially those we don't know. Refocus on how you can help (and be helped by) people in your own community and you will feel much better.

If you're not sure where to start just do an internet search for "mutual aid [your city/region]" and show up to an in-person event. That should get the ball rolling.

  • It was only when Minsung traded video games for playing real-life games, including Dungeons and Dragons, that he met women, and his views shifted. He became, in his words, an "ardent feminist".

Tabletop gaming has really come a long way since the early days.

  • Reddit is a living emblem of the problem this is trying to solve so I have no idea what you mean.

Mods can’t be trusted to enforce the truth. It’s far too complicated and they invariably end up enforcing their own distorted view of the world instead.

  • There’s no evidence this happens on Lemmy though. You don’t need a conspiracy to explain the fact that the site was founded by people with a certain viewpoint and it has and continues to attract more such people as it grows.

  • I know we’re all supposed to be dunking on this for being “cringe” or whatever but honestly what’s the harm? It’s an object and if it brings people joy that’s their business not mine.

  • Tried that. The issue is that the it’s still too sensitive at the point the motion kicks in. Surprised p64 doesn’t have a sensitivity setting. Maybe another emulator would?

  • Yeah that’s part of it but also it’s just really tough to do fine adjustments and it seems to jump all over the place. That’s the bigger issue though the lag is a compounding factor.

  • Not sure if this is related but I’ve been using project 64 lately and the control stick seems way more difficult to use than the original hardware. Anyone know why this is? It makes it really tough to aim.

  • Maybe someday but I think it’s a long way off, and again, other sources of water would be far more practical so even if it becomes possible it’s unlikely to be economical.

But putting distant future hypothetical tech aside I doubt this is a factor here. The emerging mineral resources are reason enough on their own.

  • Resource extraction yes but there’s no practical way to transport large quantities of water from Greenland to the West where it’s needed. People have come up with similar ideas with the Great Lakes but the engineering required is insane and would be the largest public works project in human history.

There are much much cheaper ways to increase water supplies in the West, and some of them may even be worthwhile.

  • During the drought it was awful you could barely go outside for weeks on end. Last few years had been better until now but we’ll see. Extremely weird to have fires in January like this.

  • This really doesn’t end as well for you as you think it does.

  • Haha the culture in 2001 was not ready for that kind of humor. Maybe not even today.

  • Very interesting article. I might need to check out the author's book, it sounds right up my alley.

Another interesting fact is that as we've seen these agrarian and patrilocal traditions weaken under capitalism, we suddenly see a strong push for gender equality after thousands of years of consistent oppression. This also fits the pattern, although the number of dramatic changes to society in recent centuries make it difficult to pinpoint exact causes.
