  • What? Amtrak is great for specific use cases. For intrastate travel in the US, Amtrak often is the fastest, cheapest, most comfortable experience.

Oddly, going two states over, it's often the slowest and most expensive, but for mid haul distance, Amtrak is fantastic.

  • I know you said it was for movies, which I use them for as well, but there was a recent scandal with 1337 and malware in Baldars Gate 3.

Downloading movies is pretty safe, but if you decide to branch out, I'd be a little hesitant to use 1337 for anything else.

  • TL;DW - he needs reference screen grabs to make his screen accurate props, but lately in browser DRM has been making it harder and harder to take screenshots (specifically using a Mac on Amazon streaming service). So if he gets frustrated enough, he'll just torrent a HQ copy and use that instead.

DRM is making it annoying for everyone, and you never own anything if you don't have an unrestricted local copy.

  • The main problem is that if any of the commands fail, they'll just keep moving on to the next one.

You can get around this by using the && chaining operator.

    Like

    apt-get install curl && curl ... && apt ... && ...

That'll get around the worst of copy/pasting long strings, but writing a more robust shell script is a better option if you're doing it for anything important.

Also, if you're copy/pasting batches of commands from the Internet, just be aware that hidden text can be snuck into command suggestions, so it's best to copy paste into a text editor first and make sure you understand what it's doing before you run it.

  • Development has always been incremental, but as gaming engines get better, they start being used for more and more things. AAA games don't always develop the graphics and game engine from scratch, most often they develop one technology and use it for many games, or even buy a pre-built engine and "just" build the game around it.

Unreal Engine has been used not just for games, but also for real time, or near real time film making. The same engine that is used for playing a game can be used to create the background effects in TV shows, or whole scenes.

It's crazy to suggest we just stop working on something because it's good enough, because that's not what people do.

  • Yeah, it's tricky though because road damage from weight isn't a linear thing, but also, trucks aren't just out there for fun, they're out there to put products on shelves for consumption.

So if you tax truck registration in Ohio, but then big trucking companies will just register in Mississippi like rental car companies do.

Tax diesel and that will impact a bunch of non semi vehicles.

Hard to make a one size fits all cost.

  • Because solar and chip making is pretty hard on the environment. We don't do it here cause you need to process the waste to make it less toxic, so instead we buy from places that don't care.

Other countries have lots of advantages over the US, but let's not pretend that it's a utopia over there. Japan is so overworked and makes immigration so difficult they basically don't have a next generation.

Germany is great and all, but they also have a lot of imports, heck they almost froze last year due to their over reliance on cheap Russian fossil fuels.

  • Did you pay with a credit card? You can always work on a chargeback with the credit card company. (you said bank, so... what this debit?)

Obviously, you can't go back in time and change what was done, but the rental company has your money, so they don't have any incentive to expedite the matter.

  • He improperly designed five bridges, this is just the one that collapsed, starting the investigation.

Now he's prohibited from working on bridge projects for 5 years. I think that's prudent, he could have easily killed people.

Wondering if this was just due to negligence, or if there were other systemic issues that allowed or encouraged these design problems, like pressure from management, or improper reviews. Feels like a pretty big failure to not have this work checked by at least one other engineer.

  • But you would do that. Someone that just says "I force the iron gate open with strength" gets no bonus, just a straight roll. Someone that says "I look for a weak spot in the gate and use a pry bar that I found earlier to force that spot open" maybe gets a +2 to their roll for extra thinking.

Also, it depends on the group, you don't need a one size fits all for this. If you have one or two people who are uncomfortable with going into detail, then you have to adjust your GMing to match the situation. But if there's just someone who needs a little encouragement, then you start throwing bonuses for extra roleplaying left and right.

The whole point is to make it fun for everyone (including the GM) so you're going to give bennies for out of the box thinking and extra effort, appropriately scaled to the group you are in.

  • What would you use it for? There's no way I'd put any of my login credentials on there, or any thing that has any access to payments. Nothing that has access to my personal data or communications, so.... seems like a non-starter for me.

I might get something that connects to my WiFi, but only to the guest network, or a separate network.

Basically assume that it has some irremovable malware in the firmware.
