  • China bad? This is so obviously framed as aggression by China. This smells of pro-war propaganda, reprogramming people to expect a coming war with China. Be weary of the sneaky China man on your borders! Next they'll tell us Taiwan should join Nato.

Meanwhile the New York Times is supporting Trump and thus supporting fascism.

  • True of course haha. But among top athletes I'd expect the vast majority to be above (or below) average outliers in various metrics.

To add, the allegation was made by the International Boxing Association which is apparently controlled by the Russian plutocrats and gangsters.

It's really a good example that it takes more energy to refute false allegations than to make them.

  • Hmm. The initial drama seems bullshit, starting a huge fight over the word "craftsmanship" is just hypersensitive at best or toxic behavior to manufacture outrage at worst. A gender neutral terms would be preferable but hardly the biggest issue right now.

But since "uncle bob" supports Trump then that alone is enough to condemn him as a supporter of fascism and bigotry.

  • This isn't a complicated case. She was born a female with female genitalia and has a passport issued as female and self reports as female. She is not transgender. What else is needed but to test for doping? Half of all women have higher than average testosterone levels, that is how averages work. Many top athletes are anomalies of some sort.

The IOC did create a framework for transgender athletes but that doesn't apply to her. The fascists are just trying to smear her and paint her as a cheater and "other" like fascists do.

  • I've also thought about something like that for reddid/lemmy through tags. Like you don't just up or downvote but you vote "funny", "serious" or "insightful" or "wrong" or "trashy" etc. So you can separate posts and comments about topics. Also things like tagging a post as "repost" should be done manually or mostly automatically through image search so you can still upvote without feeling duped. And once AI becomes smart enough in the future to reliably detect common lies and propaganda you could do more of it automatically.

But for youtube you'd mostly need a common "public" server network of storage and streaming servers with a common fediverse interface. And you'd need some kind of global and voluntary coop subscription where people can pay 5 bucks that is split and paid out to any content you watch. Then you wouldn't be dependent on advertising any more.

Anyway there are so many good things we could try but we won't.

  • Yeah, they failed to communicate it. Which people chose to interpret in the most uncharitable way. "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity." - Hanlon's razor

Misconceptions about Firefox's Privacy Preserving Ad Measurement – Andrew Moore

Of course people who complain about this loudly are most likely people who block all ads and tracking anyway so it doesn't even affect them. My ideal would be the total ban of all advertising. Then let the free market sort it out lol.

  • That would be great. In addition to this, I'd like something that combines bookmarks and something like zotero, so I bookmark something and create a locally hosted web archive. Ideally saving what is already loaded by the browser. So if the bookmark site dies I still have my archive including all images.

Ideally this could also improve coverage of webarchive through p2p.

  • Are there any banks that support FIDO2 or something like that already? I'm so sick of SMS or other shenanigans.

I don't have a phone that supports any of the foss android versions but I have been making due without a google account and free app stores (f-droid + obtainium which is great). That will have to do. I'd love much better privacy but it is too much work. I also do relatively little with my smartphone.

  • I'd tell them there is almost no water on venus, that it's like thousands of times dryer than the sahara. Until they have a scientific explanation for an alternative biology that is not water based and can survive in air, it's far more likely phosphine is created by some abiotic process.

I do find it funny because this whole hysteria about life on venus is so silly. There is no reason to assume phosphine is being created by a completely alien, non water based biology. But they want to believe and/or sell clicks.

  • They can report only one side over and over again and focus on the emotional impact, include "people say" or qualify rumors or speculations or exaggerations so that it's still factual reporting, while completely ignore the other side. That is what you see Israel and US MSM doing. Humans have biases and can easily be manipulated.

I suspect that Al Jazeera is still mostly on it's "best behavior" trying to establish itself but ultimately it's controlled by Quatar and not free. That still makes it incredibly valuable because it's not controlled by US empire.

  • Of course the banks are dependent on infinite growth to keep the house of cards from collapsing and complain. That China is stabilizing their birthrate is very good news. But they have to make it weird and talk about fur babies. Yikes.
